2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

If I was a Russian millionaire I would pay for Nastya's training anywhere in the world - probably in the US, Canada, or Japan.

I just think her options in Russia are very limited right now. Anyone other than maybe Mishin or Eteri would likely be a step backwards for her. Eteri's camp is full (and I would be worried that her camp's style would detract from what makes Nastya so special), and it's unclear if Mishin would take on a new student.

I would buy stock in Nastya if I had the money. I hope someone in Russia does the same it's about time some of these young ladies in Russia leave to train abroad if they get the financial backing to do so. What Nastya needs is what you said a Russian millionaire willing to financially support her training anywhere in the world and still representing Russia. Tennis players do it hockey players do it swimmers do it why not figure skaters too? I don't expect this will happen with Nastya but it is an option. I still expect her to find a new coach soon and continue to skate for Russia.

Although I don't know much about metabolism and nutrition, I'm really concerned about what Maria said about her diet. 1000 calories? She is talller than average woman and is a professional athlete. She'd probably need twice as much just to maintain or even lose a bit of her weight. But maybe it's enough for her? Still very strange.

Maria is a tall skater and a professional athlete... 1000 calories sounds almost dangerous. If you train as much as all competitive skaters do, you‘ll burn calories as well... where does she even get her energy from? Honestly, this whole attitude towards food is scary. I‘m concerned for her and hope that she works with someone who knows what they‘re doing.. because at the moment it doesn‘t sound like that at all. Hoping she‘ll be fine.

I am really worried about Gubanova and her prospects. But at the same time I'm glad that she left Buyanova. I remember already in the 90s I wished that Olga Markova would leave Buyanova who I thought was bad news. Besides Sotnikova (which I start to think was a fluke) there is NO success stories with Buyanova and Ladies, well, perhaps Markova back in the day but she never really made it big.

Nastya certainly needs a new coach one who can work with her artistry. But Buyanova didn't just part ways with Nastya she got nasty with Nastya and it's like she's trying to sabotage her career by publicly announcing that she was expelled from cska. She coached an Olympic champion in 2014 why be so bitter and petty when it did not work out with one of her pupils? The whole thing is very strange. Maybe Nastya is not in top shape and maybe she acted up we don't know we probably never will. Why go public with this the way the coach did? It does no one any good. If there were real issues at hand problems with Anastasia for instance then the coach should just go to the Russian Federation and explain it to them and they would handle it. But Nastya has no reputation as a troublemaker or a party girl so I find the whole thing very suspicious.

Let me just dislike Buyanova for a couple of minutes.
Poor Nastya.

I am somewhat worried now because Tsurskaya retired. Sotskova changed coaches. Gubanova was kicked. Which means they will need some top skater for CSKA. Which means either poaching (which I hope won't be easy anymore since Sochi was a long time ago, and the rep was going down the drain since then) or some insane politiking at domestic competitions.

Also, regardless of the statement being true or not, I am sure there would be a more polite way to dismiss a student than this, specially because, after such a label from a well known and influential coach, I can see how some coaches would consider not taking her in, because who knows, maybe it is true.

I can't avoid but roll eyes a little bit remembering folks who complained that Eteri does not support her students. BEcause about a year ago, Buyanova was brought as one of the examples of nice and friendly coach who would take all, help and support and blablabla

I called this a year ago, when every skater was planning to move to CSKA for some reason, leaving in my opinion far better coaching teams probably for money, i said Buyanova would have found no success and then she would have gone out for shopping again finding new skaters.

You can go back and rewatch the Test Skates, you have all your answers there on why CSKA can't produce successful ladies, they don't train enough, not as efficiently and as of result you have:
- level 2 or 3 spins and steps sequences (points left to table)
- underrotated / inconsistent jumps.

Yes, the work on edges, posture,... is noticeable but it's all pointless if you lose that much on the technical elements.

I don't understand why RusFed supports this behaviour, this is literally destroying the depth of your team.

Inna Goncharenko was the coach who was bringing the results at CSKA, now in my opinion they should either invest more on Davydov or find new talented coaches, or completely rework the training schedule, skaters need to be more prepared in September.

SPOILER ALERT: they won't and 1-2 years from now they will try to convince one of the Eteri skaters to switch (my guess is Kostornaya) so they can have a skater at the Olympics, and pretend CSKA has produced a competitive senior lady.

Also hot take on Gubanova -> she should have never left Turenko. She was a bit more consistent with her, she would have probably got a GP spot by now. Her best hope now is to join Chebotareva, but i don't know if she can accept her this late in the season.

i can imagine the US and Canada would pounce on the opportunity to have her skate for them. at this point, she could easily be the top skater in Canada and top 1 or 2 in the US.

There is no need for Gubanova to represent the US or Canada - not mention that US and Canada do not pay for a skater's training so it would be expensive to represent them. If she wants to change countries, it makes way more sense to switch to a smaller country (probably in Eastern Europe) with zero internal competition who would be willing to pay for all of her training costs elsewhere for the opportunity to have an elite figure skater at the Olympics.

Re: CSKA not having a top lady - I won't be at all surprised if someone (or multiple someones) leave and/or get poached from Eteri before the Olympics. If that happens, I hope whoever it is goes to someone other than Buianova (idk who else there is at CSKA but I'm sure there are others). She has completely failed multiple talented ladies at this point, and her behavior regarding Nastya is completely unprofessional.

I'm pretty sure the average women needs like 1600 to 2000 calories, but of course the average women isn't a competitive athlete. I'm pretty sure 1000 calories is almost considered starvation. Maybe she was being facetious? I hope all these young girls having someone looking out for them.

Please don't give me nightmares about Kostornaya going to Buyanova :slink:

I think there would be a lot of protests from angry parents and patriotic stakeholders in USFSA.

Just throwing it out there, but what if Buyanova switches to Ice Dance? with the guidance of Tarasova and all the ice dancers that work on that group, she would probably find more success than with ladies.

I'm up for anything that gets her away from coaching ladies. ;)

I thought the same exact thing. ;) Lol.

I would think so too. but that won't happen until the Russian Federation has completely written Nastya off. The fed just may want her in juniors this year to rebuild her career. I just don't think you should give up on a 16 year old. I still hope she gets a coach she can work with and is happy living and training back in St Petersburg.

Whining parents would be in the extreme minority. It probably won't happen in America where little Alysa Liu is leading the American ladies charge back with her triple axels and quads. But Canada is a more realistic possibility for Anastasia although probably very unlikely at this point. if she changes federations and I don't think she will it would probably be one of the smaller x Soviet Bloc countries. But she has a little sister who's a figure skater I should probably wants to be around and watch her grow up.if she went to another country that would not be possible.

I just hope that no one from top 15 best Russian girls switch to Buyanova in the next 3-4 years. One or two students who got worse after switching to her could be a coincidence but 4 girls who couldn't achieve any remarkable success after training with her is a warning sign.

So chances are we won't see Buyanova at rinkside on TV this season?

She was always so involved in her skaters: when they made a mistake you could silently hear the swear words rolling over her lips. with "Gospodi!" being the mildest, LOL.

Please don't give me nightmares about Kostornaya going to Buyanova :slink:

Yeah but to me the Twilight free skate makes her more comparable to the other two (with less technical abilities even though she has a better jumping technique in my opinion): it doesn't really play her artistic strenghts, and i haven't seen the choreography yet but the music and the theme are not the best veichle for better components.

Because she doesn't have quads, and we'll see if she includes 3A eventually, she needs to maximize her components, otherwise she will lag behind the other two, Zagitova, Tuktamysheva and potentially Medvedeva.

I think with the right coach, all four of these wonderful girls could've been on the Zhenya and Alina level of the stuff mentioned above...just sad it didn't work out for them. But then again, I wouldn't be too sure who'd be the right coach for them. Sometimes I go a bit crazy and imagine what would've become of Elena, had she trained under Eteri

Lordy lordy lordy. I have always said its vital for a talent to have the right coach and stay for years. I know alot of people dislike Eteri but look how her pupils blossom under her year after year. Wowwwww. Elena Radianova had a chance to do much more and she was really good. If only she had the best coach. Masha and Nastya G too. But it is what it is.

I am still hoping Gubanova ends up with Mishin although that may not be likely. She needs a home with the same coach for a couple years so she can blossom like some of us thought she would have by now. 16 is still young in ladies figure skating but not in Russia. 16 is middle age.
