Some Music Suggestions for Our Top Ladies Next Season

Overall I thought this year music/program selections were.....eh....OK...at best...let's hope next season, there be some better selections. Here are some possible suggestions. What do u guyz think.

Kimmi Messiner:
SP: Secret Garden - There's a number of good selections that will suite her lyrical style but won't overwhelm her, I think her Winter program was tooo mature for her.
LP: La Mer, Girl With the Flaxen Hair, or Debussy Works.

Susanna Poykio:
SP: Schindler's List - I agree with alot of the ppl on this board about this one.
LP: Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Joanne Rochette:
SP: Spanish Guitar by Gary Moore - Perfect for her, I liked her SP this season but I think something more melodic but in that style will win the judges better.
LP: Greig Piano Concerto - She said she wanted something classical and her powerful SP a few years ago prove that she can skate to this.

Sarah Meier:
SP: A Piazolla Tango
LP: Bacchanale from Samson and Deliah

Mao Asada:
SP: Liebestraum "Dream of Love"
LP: Cinema Paradiso - I thought Caravan was just a bit to big for her.

Emily Hughes:
SP: Music from "The Departed" or Shostakovich "Russian Waltz"
FP: Vanessa Mae's "Leyenta", Dvorak "New World Symphony" - I think she needs a FP with more grunt and power

Alissa Czisny:
SP: Harlem Nocturne or Spanish Caravan
FP: Legends of the Falls (I think she can this as well as Gusmeroli did)

Yu-Na Kim:
SP: The Swan by Saint-Saens
LP: The Last Emperor - A good challenge for her I think

I love most of Debussy's works, but I'm wondering if Kimmie needs something with a bit more spunk to it?

I would love to see Yu-na or Mao use selections from Medelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream...

Even though it's been used to death, I wouldn't mind seeing what Emily could do with Malaguena (I'm ducking now!) Or how about a Sousa march for her? Nah!

I'd like to see a more uptempo LP from Yu-Na...maybe she could pull off a Malaguena. That might be interesting.

Legends of the Fall for Alissa would be a great fit, if she would smile a bit less...

let's see how this music stuff works out for all of them, one thing that I want to see so badly is Michelle Kwan skate to Phantom of the Opera if she does make a return to competitive skating ever.

CDMM1991 said they were skating to Al Di Meola this season. Never heard how it went or was received by the judges, but thought that was a great idea and direction to broaden the spectrum of "acceptable" skating music. At present it still seems a little "narrow of a path of music" a skater needs to use. I would love to see more "abandonment of the old war horse barn" of typical skating music, whatever they decide.

It is happening, I would say Brian J's was a slight departure for expl. But still the thoughts of The Cure having some good instrumentals, Steely Dan or a remix of Grove Armada's Edge Hill. There is a load of wonderful music out there I hope the diversity is "pushed" to it's limits. And the limits are lessened.

And would love to see Kimmie skating to something more upbeat as well. I think it would fit her better, but wonder if the slower style is due to energy saving tactics???

It would be fun to see her in the Patty McBride numbers, Fascinatin' Rhythm and The Man I Love. It would stretch her, but she'd have fun with it. There are also Embraceable You, Stairway to Paradise, etc.

For Mao... Piano music suits her so well. Pick something by Chopin, maybe fantasie impromptu for her long, and Summertime for the short.


Yu-Na... i think she would make a great swan, but Caroline and Marai woudl make better ones, so i think Yu-na should do a ballet... maybe La Sypheide or somthing lyrical and gentle.

Alissa should skate to malaguena. no doubt.

Emily should use Pirates if the Caribean, great music, a huge fan favorite and it suits her powerful style.

Great suggestions, Tinymavy! Just for Kimmie's choices (Rhapsody in Blue and Nutcracker) I'm not sure if they will work for her (I don't know why, but I have difficulty to find something suitable for Kimmie). But the rest would be :agree:

right. since we really have no idea of yet of what her "style" is... it's hard making choices for her. the music that she has had up to date has not really worked for her.

I think ballet music is still popular and Mao also said she is going back to ballet training.We might see her using ballet music next season.

I would love to see somebody uses Irina's "Wonderland" .

i actually liked ralph vaughn william's the lark ascending for yuna, and i believe that she wasn't able to showcase its true potential this season. i aslo think that she will use it again, for i did notice that in the past she usually uses her programs for two years. She used "El Tango de Roxanne" for the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons, and she used "Papa, Can Yor Hear Me" for the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons. I'm only expecting a new SP for her then.

for mao i believe it will be great if she skated to something that has an oriental feel to it, preferably something accompanied by a biwa.

For Mao: Definitely classical music that underscores her ballet training.

Because she has exceptionally happy, clean atmosphere, heavenly-beautiful Mozart pieces would become her very much. I would like to see her skates to pieces that have absolutely major tones, without any sadness at all. Because her skating and jumps are so smooth and effortless, music with harmonious, smooth melody line would be great for her. I actually liked her Nutcracker very much. It was really a happy piece of music.

I would love to see Mao skates to Debussy or Ravel for her SP, especially piano pieces would be great. Some of the Debussy and Ravel pieces may be a bit challenging because they require a lot of nuances and delicate moves. But because she is determined to improve her artistry, I would love to see her skates to more nuanced music next season.

For Miki: Pop music that sings about a story of a strong woman.I actually think that Miki looks much more attractive when she skates to pop music like Mickey and I Believe than authentic classical masterpiece. Although she might have graduated from Mickey, “I Believe” suited her very well. I don’t know if it’s all possible to skate to pop music for competitions, but I think she looks nice. When I search her videos on Youtube, gala performances seem to have greatest view counts.

Yuna: Modern composers.
With her ability to express herself, she can do difficult ones. I think that she would look very beautiful when she skates to bittersweet, mature pieces.

Kimmie: Happy music!
I would like to see her skates to happy American songs with orchestra with great volume! Because she is very bright, happy, athletic girl, I think it good to use her own strengths!

Carolina: Happy, classical music.
I absolutely loved her SP this season. It was a very, very lovely program. I would like to see her repeat something harmonious, pleasant, and peaceful to watch. Because she has a great line, I would love to see her skates to classical music, rather than contemporary music.

Fumie: Same songs from this season.
Because they were so good, but weren’t skated to their full potential, I would like to see her repeat them. Take care, Fumie.

Yukari: something cool and strong.
I actually liked her 2005-2006 SP better than anything else. She looked nice with pants. It may be also because I personally do not enjoy the themes like Cinderella or Geisha.

It can't be vocal music with lyrics. An instrumental version of a pop song would be allowed. If it's a good arrangement of a catchy tune it might be good, especially for a short program. (Or a few different tunes for a long program.) But any "story" would have to be told through the skating movement, not through the words of a song.

Good point, but even though I think her Exhibition was skated to full potential I still hope she skates it again

Yah, "popular musics" can and have worked IMO - sans lyrics, but still wonder about the judges???? and how they take it. x4

eta, I was not all that fond of the Fantasia piece for Fumie, like the skate / choreography (LOVE her exspressions), but not so much the chanting in the music on a incessant basis.
