2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Since we are in Russian ladies thread... hardly ever are Slavic women naturally this teeny weeny.

https://fpnotebook.com/endo/exam/wghtmsrmntinchldrn.htm

35 kilogram is normal weight in girls at 11 YEARS OLD.

35 kilogram is healthy weight if you are less than 140 cm tall. Which is not usual in European women.

That is not "body shaming", those are facts.

A) not all russian ladies are Slavic, Russia is partially situated in Asia, Alina and Kamila for example are Asians.
B) it is exactly body shaming, because there people who don’t fit into „standard“ ratios, and implying they are unhealthy is just plain rude.
Calling adult thin petite people Teeny weeny is also quite rude actually.
I don’t see people bodyshaming thin male skaters as not being muscular enough for their taste, but somehow people have no problem to tell women how they should look like to satisfy their personal tastes.

I was trying to stop that kind of conversation because i'm pretty sure it doesn't belong here. Well, i didn't succeed obviously... But, can we please stop that conversation, at least here. It doesn't help athletes, i can garantee you. My old friend from school is a marathon runner and he is in shock by reading those kind of observations about 'what people's weight is telling about them'. And it doesn't help people with real eating disorders too, believe me. After all, thin people are also people, it could be their choice to be thin, and that has nothing to do with them being hungry or being ill! If somebody is really concerned about health of figure skaters, he/she can always start a thread and discuss those topics there! Because, talking about those topics in this exact thread doesn't make you a really 'concerned' person about the topic you are discussing. The effect is quite the opposite one.

We can hardly talk about top athletes as "normal girls" in the sense of average weight, esp. when there is no relation to the height. It's different for a girl with height 150 cm and 165 cm. So your "facts" are just nonspecific data that tells us nothing about a specific group of people. It's completely normal that for specific activity you can find specific body types, like basketball player vs. figure skater. None of them will have "normal weight" but probably also will be different in height.

Sorry, but there are different tatars, more european and more asian-type. Alina and Kamila are european tatars descended from the volga bulgars. There was also such a famous tennis player Marat Safin, also a european type of tatar.

I am so proud of Serafima because she didn't lose her love for skating, she was not discouraged in spite of not having it easy to put it mildly. She found the force to keep going, recuperated her jumps when she lost them, kept improving and showed she is a fighter. This lady did all this with big sacrifices, bearing difficult conditions and surviving in a very competitive field. I'm sending her a virtual hug :)

I remember how fell in love with the russian ladies in 2014 watching Yulia L. on youtube and under a video I found a comment listing all the amazing russian juniors at that time. That's how I discovered both Evgenia and Serafima.

Here are Sima's programs from St. Petersburg Cup

I think the biggest news is a weak junior group from Japan this season. The second news is the rise of Korean juniors. Alysa Liu is so far just an outlier - there is no trend. As for the "Russian dominance" we have Kamila and a group of skaters capable of scoring in 190-200 range. So, it's business as usual.

So true. I think the biggest news this year is the rise of the Korean juniors. Why not expand the GPs and have a Korean event as well? That would be great, and it would mean there is more room for the Russian girls...;)

Anyway, glad to see Gubanova got third and did "meh." After the whole summer I was really worried for her. An upper 180's score is not great all things considered, but when you think about the chaotic past few months she's had it's really an amazing result.

An upper 180's was OK for Gubanova I think. She omitted a 3T so with that she would have made 190s. But I really really hope she can up her game and be more competitive at RC and eventually RusNats. And she will probably need a +205 at a Challenger to even be considered for GPs next year. Tough.

I'm totally with you. Another virtual hug here.:luv17:

Fly weight athletes, so we are watching a flea circus, LOL

There is probably a critical mass in female athletes capable of repeatedly and reliably landing triksels and quads without immediate risk of overload injury. Critical mass as a function of power to weight ratio, which could be statistically evaluated.
The incredible thing is these girls don't seem to be bothered by triple axels or quads. They may be very light but they are incredible and that cannot be denied. I am not body-shaming anyone at all just dealing with the facts of that there are certain advantages for lighter skatersand what they can do is amazing even though I prefer artistry and musicality. I never have and never will deny greatness and uniqueness.

I hope is not the trend. I really do not want to see slew of borderline anorectic girls with two years career. 75 lb (34 kg) is a child's weight, not a healthy weight for a grown up woman.
I don't know if it's a trend or not. But these light girls are absolutely incredible as well as being very special figure skaters. I look forward to seeing what they can do and they're incredible heights but I hope they don't blow the field away because we want to see competition in all events.

You know you are a FS nerd when you are rewatching the same program over and over. For me it has been Shcherbakova's free program from Lombardia. I just love it.

But I also love the aftermath after the skate. Anna looking full of anticipation (love it when she pulls out a napkin from her teddybear), and Daniil looking SUPER nervous in the K&C (I'm sure he was afraid of another disappointment like in the short).

And then the scores come. Anna's fist bump and Daniil's relief are just wonderful.:luv17:

If I remember correctly, her first performances of the year weren't the best either, and then she grew as the season went along. By the time RusNats and RCF came along, she was doing clean shorts and longs with only one fall. I don't think she looks any worse than how I remember her doing at the beginning of last season. So hopefully she'll improve throughout the season in a similar way, and maybe a bit quicker so she can get an even higher score on the SB list.

Funnily enough, right as I type, someone at my school is playing Liebestraum on the piano and I'm being reminded of her free program last year

I think Kamila and Alysa already are taller than 140cm, and I doubt they will stay this short forever.

34kg is not a normal adult weight except for very few, and I don’t think is applicable to them either.

I love how when Anna comes off the ice Daniil gives her a big hug. They both look so happy and relieved. It's so cute!! Daniil's reactions in the kiss and cry with all of the students show how close their team is, in my opinion. Eteri and Sergei keep their emotions on the inside for the most part, but Daniil lets his show. I feel like this is actually a good strategy for their team.

Tarakanova listed as participant in 2nd stage of Russian Cup in senior (master) category. Kanysheva and Chromykh listed as participants in 3rd event of Russian Cup as juniors (candidates to masters).

Hmmm does this mean no Senior Nats for Kanysheva? Unless she does Seniors and Juniors at one of the stages of the RC, but is that even allowed?

She needs to do junior events to get to Junior Nats and have a shot at JW. That's more important than Sr Nats.

Oh definitely. But theoretically she could have done four events, two senior and two junior to get to both nationals. That way she could have gone to senior nats and been able to have a good showing before the Youth Olympics, which will be slightly less competitive to get to than Junior Worlds since the 2006 girls won't be eligible. But maybe if she has good outings at her junior cup events they'll send her anyways. At this point all I care about for her is that she gets a SB score to get a Senior GP next year, although it would've been nice to see how she stacked up at Senior Nationals, especially since none of the other Eteri juniors are eligible. And I guess maybe she wouldn't have been ready for stage 2 of the Russian Cup, and it might not be good to push the injury by doing 4 events.
