2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Just wanted to pop into to say Sima did really well in Almaty! She got a score of 69.54 and is in first after the sp.

Well done, Sima!!! I am so happy for her. Her jumps look massive!
I cannot wait to see her and Zhenya together at Skate Canada. It is nice to see them in the same international competition again. Their friendship during Juniors was the cutest. I remember their big hug from RusNats this year. Maybe we will see another? :)

Why would you want someone to be forced to retire from the sport they love? I understand that last season and the beginning of this season have not been very strong for Maria, but you should not wish that upon her. If she retires it should be because SHE wants to retire. How would feel if someone told you that you should retire from the sport you love? Or if someone forced you to retire?

I normally don't comment on rude posts, but I had to for this one.

if shes getting the same scores this season then surely this will be her last GP invitation 46 SP ?

Alena's 3A! This really changes everything. I assume that if she's doing two 3As in the long that she'll also be doing one in the short probably. Which means that she definitely has a higher BV than Liza now. And it goes without saying who should have the edge in PCS, and I think the judges will come through. They were already giving here such high PCS in juniors, so I trust them to give her high PCS for her much anticipated senior debut. To be honest, I have to remind myself that this is in fact her first time competing senior, because it just feels like she's been in seniors for so long. Anyways, now predicting the Russian worlds team is beyond impossible. I mean how could you leave any of the 4A behind? Trusova is doing historical difficulty and has the world record and the highest BV by a landslide. Kostornaia has beautiful triple axels, huge consistent triples, and is one of the best skaters artistically and musically ever (imo), and then there's Shcherbakova, who has a quad lutz and has some of the best musicality I've ever seen, is Russian national champ, and has an amazing costume change that we have to see at worlds. And then there's Alina, who has the highest non-quad/triple axel base value in the field, has huge jumps that are looking great and great programs and performance, will probably get the highest PCS of the field (although Alyona might be able to match hers if she is consistent), and oh right, she's the reigning Olympic and World champion. Not the mention Medvedeva and Tuktamyshva, who have their own list of reasons. I'm so happy the field is so amazing, but already devastated that some of these girls won't make it.

Anyways, I think an Alyona short program with a triple axle could (and should) get a world record in the sp. Maybe it won't happen the first time she lands it, but I think it will happen.

All I’m saying is I would not want to be on the selection committee this year... they have 6 capable ladies that could win a world medal let alone a gold.

Exactly, if she keeps doing not-so-well she won't be getting international events anymore and your problem will solve itself, no need to force her into retirement. :rolleye:

Great news for Aliona. I don't think I've seen a better 3A in the past couple of years. Not to mention the difficult entry into it.

Also, I do believe that there's a great possibility for Alina to add a quad at some point this season. Her free program this year is less packed than her previous ones, and I don't think that this is due any technical problems or stamina issues. It's either for a better artistic result or they leave her room to breathe if some big element comes inbetween.

So a further month of recovery/healing and training? Good to hear #TeamTutberidzeForProgress doesn't push this Alyona, just like they haven't pushed the other Alyona who now throws triksels with excellent form.

Kamila Valiyeva is also nursing a small injury but much to our fortune, she was 'divided' in two skaters for replacement in Denis Ten Memorial, the excellent Maya Khromykh and superb Dar'ya Usachyova.

Kameshek might also have a big surprise in store for us ....

Mishin explained why Tuktamysheva is better than other Russian figure skaters

The next figure skating Challenger Series tournament starts on Friday - Finlandia Trophy, and will be held in the suburbs of Helsinki. Next week the Grand Prix series will begin.

The main intrigue of Finlandia Trophy is the confrontation between Russians Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva and Alyona Kostornaya. Both may claim the victory.

Alexey Mishin, the coach of the Sankt Peterburg skater told 'Sport Day by Day' correspondent about Tuktamysheva’s readiness for the start and the current season.

M: I talked after the autumn Open Test Skates that took place at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow with the president of the Figure Skating Federation Aleksander Gorshkov and the organization’s general director Aleksander Kogan. They evaluated and said - the only thing Lisa needed was stability. She has now reached a very high level - the only one in Russia who now does three triple Axels in two programs. She does them, pah-pah-pah ... one of the best in history.

C: What will be the current season for Tuktamysheva?
M: Last season, Lisa showed excellent skating and showed the second best result in the world in total score.

Don't know how old this 'news' is, or where the complete interview is kept, but Mishin will probably be unpleasantly surprised by recent developments shown in Finlandia training.

Ooh I hope so! Alina’s not going down without a fight, she sees what her training mates can do everyday and she can definitely challenge them. I think her flip has a lot of potential, definitely her best jump so maybe they can get her out of the harness for the quad.

Poster of Medvyedeva underground, Zagitova in the image of Cleopatra and movies from Tuktamysheva: what is being discussed in the world of figure skating

The 2015 World Champion in figure skating, Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva, named two films that had a strong influence on her. Fans of Yevgenyia Medvyedeva went down to a depth of 630 m with a poster dedicated to the skater. Meanwhile, the famous coach Tat'yana Tarasova reacted to criticism of the new costume of Alina Zagitova. What other events are discussed in the world of figure skating - in the material of RT.

Tuktamysheva's preferences in movies and unusual act of Medvyedeva's fans

World Champion 2015 Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva is one of the most popular athletes in Russia. Fans love her not only for her success on the ice, but also for her friendliness and openness in communicating with them. She is happy to talk about herself and about her interests apart from skating.

This week, Tuktamysheva shared her cinematic preferences with Instagram followers, first asking them to guess which films are in question. In addition, she asked them to leave their recommendations in the comments.

The Russian woman’s favourite movie was the full-length animated film “The Lion King”.

“I love it since childhood!”, wrote Tuktamysheva on Instagram.

The skater also talked about the movie which helped her cope with her emotions after she received an injury in 2014. This is the pseudoscientific film by Australian director Drew Hariot "The Secret."

“I’m not saying that this is a panacea, because my career has developed differently, but for myself I definitely decided - it works. The main thing is to sincerely want what you need, because if you do otherwise, then everything will be in vain”, wrote Tuktamysheva.

The second start for the skater this season will be the Finlandia Trophy series Challenger tournament, which will be held from October 11 to 13. In addition to her, several other students of Alexei Mishin - Sof'ya Samodurova and Andrey Lazukin, as well as other representatives of Russia - Alyona Kostornaya, Sergey Voronov, the dance couple Betina Popova - Sergey Mozgov and others will perform there.

No less popular in Russia is the two-time world champion Yevgeniya Medvyedeva, whose fans are ready to do the most unusual things. Mining engineer Karina Asilova sank with a poster dedicated to the skater into the mine to a depth of 630 m. As evidence, she posted a photo on Instagram.

"The idea to expose the poster under the earth was born after the World Cup in Saitama. I wanted to show how different people, from different professions, are interested in figure skating in Russia. And how the worry over their favourite ladies single athletes. Moreover, Zhenya’s season was difficult, I wanted to support her, and raise a smile, cheer her up. They even talk about figure skating underground. It's amazing ", - Sport24 quoted Asilova.

But fans of Pyeongchang Olympic champion Alina Zagitova continue to discuss her costume, which the athlete first demonstrated in her free program at the Japan Open team tournament. There she appeared in the image of Cleopatra.

Many figure skating enthusiasts admired the new way of the athlete, but there were those who were not satisfied with it, considering it too frank. The well-known trainer Tat'yana Tarasova spoke in defense of Zagitova.

"She has an amazing dress, let them look at their dresses. Are they designers? Let them go to the theater and criticize the costumes of ballerinas. This cannot be. What is this? Each step is discussed, people do not enjoy, and try to discover only what is bad. Zagitova has a beautiful dress that makes her very attractive and sexy, stretches her, emphasises her merits”, the specialist noted.

“Singles usually fight with themselves”

According to many experts and fans, this season in women's figure skating, the confrontation between Zagitova and two-time junior World Champion Aleksandra Trusova, who has already managed to set several records, will come to the fore.

However, the 1999 world champion Mariya Butyrskaya urged Medvyedeva, who won her first victory in an international tournament in two years (China Open), not to be disregarded come early October. In her opinion, the silver medalist of Pyeongchang is in better shape compared to the same period last year, and will fight for getting into the Russian team for the World Championship.

"I think is not necessarily her goal to win precisely over Zagitova at all costs. For Zhenya is more important solid skating, clean execution of jumps, stability. When she'll skate to her abilities, then she'll win. This attitude of “I want to beat Zagitova” will not work for Medvyedeva. Individual skaters usually fight with themselves, and not with their rivals", Butyrskaya said in an interview with 'Sport Day by Day'.

Group of Tutberidze

A tournament in memory of Denis Ten, who was killed in July 2018, is being held in Almaty these days. Many famous representatives of the world of figure skating gathered in Kazakhstan, including the silver medalist of the 2017 Grand Prix finals, Mariya Sotskova, and the winner of the Universiade bronze medal in Krasnoyarsk, Morris Kvitelashvili. For some of them, this start will be their debut this season, which means it will provide an opportunity to demonstrate their readiness.

So, former student of Eteri Tutberidze Serafima Sakhanovich, now training under the direction of Angelina Turenko, intends to perform the quadruple Salchow for the first time. She already tried to do this during training on the eve of the start, but fell.

At the same time, we note that this summer, the silver medalist of the 2018 Olympics Shoma Uno temporarily joined the Tutberidze group for the time being, because had previously ceased cooperation with his long-term mentors Matiko Yamada and Mihoko Higuchi. For two weeks he attended the training camp in Novogorsk.

Jack Gallagher, a journalist for The Japan Times, said that the Japanese could remain in the group of the Russian coach, but he was not satisfied with the requirements. According to him, the athlete did not want to work with the choreographer Daniil Gleikhengauz, who is the artistic director for all students of Tutberidze.

However, at the moment, neither Uno nor the specialist have confirmed this information.

Pogorilaya's motivation

Fans are eagerly awaiting the return of the bronze medalist of the 2016 World Cup Anna Pogorilaya to the ice, who has not participated in official starts since the end of 2017. Then she suffered a back injury, after which she completely missed two seasons, but officially did not declare her retirement.

The other day, fans had a hope to see Pogorilaya again on ice. On her social network page, she published a video from a workout in which she performed a cascade of two triple jumps.

"Motivation. I remember the triple Rittberger - Euler - triple Salchow and triple Flip, there remains the triple Lutz”, the figure skater explained in the video.

Execution Bobrova dreams about

Meanwhile, the 2014 Olympic champion Yekaterina Bobrova, who announced her retirement in July, is trying herself in a new role. Together with her husband Andrey Deputat, she opened a figure skating school, in which not only children, but also adults can learn. The ex-athlete admitted that such a project was her old dream.

“Believe me, there is still a place for a fairy tale in life, even for me and my husband. For us, a club is not a place to make money. It is important for me that the ice rental pays itself and the coaches get paid on time. If one of the students has prospects and wants to reach a certain level, I will help with advice, I will recommend a coach. They will become champions - I will only be proud”, “ Moscow Region Today ” quoted Bobrova.

In April of this year, she and her husband had a son, Aleksander. The athlete admitted that it was not easy for her to combine work and raising a child, however, the 2002 Olympic champion Alexey Yagudin was an example for her to follow.

“I admire how much time he devotes to work! It is clear that Alexey does not breastfeed, that his children spend more time with their mother, but he is an example of a person who manages everything and everything: to spend time with his family, perform in shows, and appear in commercials. He’s also playing in a play now”, the official website of the Russian Olympic movement quoted Bobrova.

The writer didn't check the ISU start list apparently, since Samodurova withdrew long ago.

LOL at TAT's remarks over Zagitova's Cleopatra in this context, while previously Alina to her was "this woman's Zagitova".

Exactly, if she keeps doing not-so-well she won't be getting international events anymore and your problem will solve itself, no need to force her into retirement. :rolleye:

But for her own sake, I hope she is considering withdrawing from her GP. Isn't Sakhanovich next in line due to SB? She is seemingly still motivated so if she does well in her first GP maybe she should get a second (I'm pretty sure Sima's GP is before Sotskova's). What's the point to go to a GP and get 49 in the SP? And worse in the LP? Go out with some dignity, Maria. You made the Olympics. You are forever an Olympian. Take a bow. This show is over say goodbye. Be proud of your accomplishments.

Who or what is Kameshek???? Kamila? Can't you just say that?

If Maria withdraws, the spot doesn't have to be filled with another russian skater, so Sima might not benefit from that. Let her skate if she wants to. I for one am glad to see her not giving up.

I'm a bit uninformed about axels (among many other things). My question: is axel-loop a done thing? Is it common (among men)? Tia
