Alena Kostornaia

It seems like she struggled a bit with the 3A in practice today. I hope she’s able to get back on track tomorrow. Maybe it would be better for her to just try 1 in the LP at first, and she can work her way up to 2 in the LP, and then add it to the SP.

I only see one here and she stayed on her feet, just had to step out. I think she’ll land it tomorrow. Probably only do one though I imagine :agree: she doesn’t need it to win, but it would be awesome to see it :luv17:

Whether she does two may depend on how the first one goes. If she lands it well and can put a combo on it, then she could go for a 2nd, and if she falls or steps out and can't put a combo on, then not add another. But we'll see.

She fell on the 2nd attempt I saw in an Instagram video - and it was a nasty fall. Wasn’t fully around and fell kind of sideways 😭

I am just so worried about her - she was just injured last season and I don’t want her to re injure herself. The world needs to see her beautiful skating

I‘m still worried tho. If it‘s not that stable, it‘s better not to go for it, especially not for two of them in the FS! I just want Aliona to be healthy and see her skate, with 3A or without!

Also, can anyone explain to me what “stalking“ a jump means? Is it similar to popping it? If I hear the word in the context of figure skating jumps, I imagine someone being VERY hesitant and just popping their attempts or not going for them at all out of fear. But I‘m not sure that‘s what it means. Really OT, I know.

StalkinG a jump is a long prep before the jump happens.. a long stretch between elements where the skater is preparing for take off.. Liza is known for it... Jason Brown used to do it especially before attempting a quad but he does not now..

Thank you! :thank:

I don’t think it’s even possible to stalk the jump with her difficult entrance 🤣 Maybe she kept circling around? Like doing the entrance but then not jumping, circling back to try again?

If she continues to hold the edge before jumping she will hit the boards.

I think she will attempt 2 3As if she manages to get a combination. And for some reason I feel that she will do it and that both ones will be successful :)

I hope she is successful in at least 1. Putting out a new jump you are not totally confident in must be very scary, especially a skater like Aliona who relies on clean performances with smooth skating between all elements. A big disruption will of course, “break the spell” which I’m sure she and her team is aware of.

When Sasha, Anna and Kamila started to add in quads, they increased the number gradually after a successful attempt in competition. I would think Aliona would follow the same path, especially since she doesn’t really need 2 to win here today. I guess we will find out what her final decision was in a couple of hours. I’m thinking her layout might be this if she goes for 1 3A:

3A
3Lz-2T
2A
3Lo
3F-3T
3F-Eu-3S
3Lz

Even with a fall .. rate of sucess was > 75 %

Thanks for your post. Alyona is really skating into unknown territory for her, isn't she? She may be confident over her triksel, but she'll want to perform it at the highest level (which she probably demands from herself unconsciously). No doubt she and Gleikhengauz will go through all the options, since this event is of less importance than the GP starts for Alyona.

Kostornaya: “When I communicate with Tuktamysheva, I don’t perceive her as an adult”

Russian skater Alyona Kostornaya commented on her performance in the short program at the Finlandia Trophy tournament. The pupil of Eteri Tutberidze skated without errors and scored 77.25 points.

Q: How do you rate your skating run?
A: There is always room for improvement. But overall I am satisfied.

Q: Which way to improve?
A: Raise it to the arbitrary level. I'll have to change my short program a little. Today I could've done better sequences and spins.

Q: We saw in training how you perform a triple Axel perfectly. Will it be in your free program and why wasn't it in the short?
A: It will be. In my short, no, because I started training this element only after the Open Test Skates. It began to turn out well only in the last two weeks. For me, the main thing is that I go out and understand that I’ll jump the triksel. And not like this - I’ll get it or not. So far we have decided not to risk it.

Q: In your free program you will jump two triple Axels or one?
A: In training now I perform it twice. But along the way, the program may change.

Q: Today you performed first. What did you feel when you pulled out this number?
A: First thought: “Damn, I'm the first.” But then I realised that this is a huge advantage. After a six-minute warm-up, I went out and skated, freed myself before everyone else and now I have more time to relax.

Q: This is your first senior start. Very worried?
A: There wasn’t much excitement. I always do the same routine in training. Why should I go out in competition and not do the same? It's like how to ride a bike - once learned, you never forget.

Q: The tournament is held almost in the home atmosphere. Is this important to you?
A: Not very important. This does not really change the situation.

Q: Why did you keep last year's short?
A: I actually performed it only once at a major tournament. It was at the Grand Prix finals. And many judges did not see it, and it is actually very good.

Q: Do you like this short program?
A: Yes. I can’t say why I specifically love it, but I really enjoy skating it. The feeling of lightness from this skating as a whole.

Q: More than a month has passed after the Open Test Skates, and your first tournament is just now. The reason for this delay was working on the triple Axel?
A: No, this tournament was originally planned, there were no others. Why this one, I don’t know.

Q: So you weren't asked where you'd like to perform?
A: The coaches and the federation decide. I wasn't asked where to go in particular. But for me, any competition is a joy. It does not matter, after a month or a half, this does not play a special role.

Q: Do you feel the difference between junior competitions and senior competitions?
A: The team is changing, I performed with my peers in juniors, here many girls are much older than me. Experienced, adult athletes. I am trying to join this team. When I talk with Lisa Tuktamysheva, I don’t really perceive her as an adult. I’m thinking the senior teammates of 23-24 seem to have eight years of difference, but you can still find something in common. She seems to be my age.

Q: You were the last in your group to make your senior debut. Trusova and Shcherbakova gave some advice on how to overcome the excitement?
A: No, we do not give each other advice. We just talked, they talked about the competitions, where they went, what they saw. Sasha talked a lot about Japan. Not about the tournament, but how she spent her time there.

Agreed. 1 trixel fr now should suffice. The main goal fo Alena should be to make the Olympic team in 2 years she needs a couple more triple axels then and maybe a quad as well but that's two years from now no need to punish her little body too much before then. Puberty won't destroy this brilliant skater with those amazing skater skills those will last her whole career.

Congratulations on winning Finlandia Trophy. Oh, she's so wonderful. I really hope to see her at the GPF.

Alena got more points than clean Alina and it looks like her Axels were not perfect.

If her Axel will be stable she will be main contender to win Worlds.
