2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

What?

Russian is great, it's a language that has so much history, it represents the Slavic ethnicity but also has lots of similarities with other languages. There are very funny facts about the meanings of certain russian words, i've the privilege to know just a few of them.

The one that always keep in my mind is the origin of the word "немцы" which are the germans, and that is completely different from the russian word for Germany which is "Германия".

From what i've been told, the origin comes from 17th century: Peter the Great who wanted to evolve Russia as a country bringing it closer to European countries (after living in Netherlands and learning there about shipbuilding) and he very much invited european families to live in Moscow to bring that european culture.

Apparently among those families, the germans never quite socialized with the russians, they were always mute and the russian word for mute is "немой"
and that's why they are "немцы".

For me more than those trivia also the sound often determine my interest in studying a language: for instance i tried to study the german language and i dropped a month after, because i didn't like how it sounds.

Sorry for the OT.

Oh!

Noooo!

No

I'm sorry I meant the comments made on YouTube not how the language sounds!

Oh dear :sad21:

Great post! It's astounding how some like to flaunt their ignorance and or prejudice.

But I wasn't...see above

I honestly don't know what's worse, or the unconscious desire of all the medvedeboys that Trusova is sick, falls into multiple quads and loses; or the utopia of believing that Tutberidze will tell Trusova to lose so that Medvedeva wins ... Seriously, they mature ... it is sad to read fan wishes asking that a 15-year-old girl be sick so that her idol clings to the only chance to win. Finally, don't be ridiculous, Trusova with triples win to Medvedeva, Trusova without quads makes 160 points, Medvedava does not even reach 150 whit skate clean... Then they are complaining about why they are considered the most toxic skating fans

Hi, as one of “the most toxic fans“ (and btw a medvedegirl not a medvedeboy ) I‘d like to say that I have not seen any fans so far who truly wish for Sasha to be sick or fall. This is a horrible thing to do, as you correctly pointed out, and I would not consider anyone thinking like this a real Zhenya fan. I‘m sure there are some, every fanbase has toxic members - but they are definitely not in the majority.

The comment about Eteri telling Sasha to simplify the program so that Zhenya wins was just that - a joke. I don‘t think anybody would seriously think this was going to happen. As for the rest - even thinking that Eteri (or Sasha for that matter) would allow to remove enough quads to give any other skater a chance to win - even if she truly is sick which we have, as I‘ve been informed, no confirmation of - is a bit naive. Eteri clearly is on a mission and it is to win all the GP events this season. And Sasha is on a mission to do her very best at each competition, push her boundaries, and win. If Sasha truly was sick, I believe they would maybe remove the 4S but nothing more than that. Remember, she landed the first ever 4Lz in ladies with a fever. And with a layout of 3 quads that she lands cleanly regularly (and in the most recent Rostelecom practice that I‘ve seen she‘s landed several, even including the 4S) no one can beat her.

So, as a Zhenya fan I‘m having my fingers crossed for a clean skate for her and a medal. Sasha will win and it will be well deserved and I have no illusions whatsoever that something different is likely to happen. That‘s all. :)

Not necessarily in that order

That‘s a funny idea. I‘m a MedvedeKostornaKanyshevagirl. (For the Russian ladies) I like a lot of others too but being a fan is hard work so only a few manage to get me so completely that I‘m getting beyond nervous watching them.

The Russian ladies are a treat this season, though and last season as well. So much talent!

Unfortunately the expectation from fans is that their favor skater wins all portions of the competition, and if if they don’t make up excuses for that skater. We saw it all season with Zagitova and now with Sasha. I’m certain Sasha and her coaches are aware she’s going to win and at the moment aren’t the least bit concerned with Medvedeva. Any girl that lands a quad is either winning or silver. Landing 2 is a guaranteed win. Why make up excuses? People have been fans of the sport long enough to know What competitions are like. Next season may be a different game for Trusova and even Anna. Time will tell.

So you think, that people who said Sasha’s been sick (or Alina’s been going through puberty last year) have been making up excuses? Did I get it right?

Well I want Sasha to win

And Zhenya

But as they cant both win, I'll stick with Sasha.

I'm not making excuses. I have no idea if Sasha is really sick or not but as lots of people were already saying so as if they did know I just assumed it was true

You forgot Anna the ballerina on ice.;) Good choices though.

And the season before! ;) it's unbelievable what the Russian ladies have done in recent years. But the sad thing is so many of them give up as teenagers and retire go to college. My hope is that some of them use Bradie Tennell and Mariah Bell as examples and what they are doing at age 21 and 23 and that they're still getting better a lot better than they were a couple years ago. I think a lot of the Russian girls probably feel if they haven't made it by age 18 it's over. But that shouldn't be the case even with the massive competition the Russian ladies have.

Good luck to Sasha Zhenya and Stasya today.

I get what you are saying but the situation is SO different in Russia I think the pragmatic thing for some of these ladies to do is to go to college and start another life. It is worth it for Bradie and Mariah to keep working at it because they can be 1 and 2 in their country. They get GP assignments, spots at Worlds etc.

In Russia there is probably another dozen 13 yr olds with quads waiting in the wings. You work your butt off, you can't even come vaguely close to Trusova, how will you combat the next generation of skating kids waiting in the wings?

I think it would be a different story for Bradie and Mariah if there was a batch of Alysa Liu's running around, about to reach senior age. And I say this as a HUGE Bradie fan!

The origin is much older. In my language the word for the Germans is "Němci" (sg. Němec) as well and it was used since early medieval times. It comes from "němý" (dumb) as "the one who can't be understood".

So in the Middle Ages only Germans were called, or all who live from you in the West?

Oh God I did miss Anna!

And many others.

I might still miss some out but here goes

Already better.

You start to understand something in figure skating.

The next lesson is Nugumanova, Gubanova, Melkumova. I allow you to skip the paragraph "Gulyakova".

So in the Middle Ages only Germans were called, or all who live from you in the West?

In the times the word emerged, practically all Slavs still spoke nearly the same language (e. g. czech and polish language were nearly the same till the turn of the 14th/15th century) while Germans, closest foreign neighbours, spoke some ugly barbaric harsh language that nobody understood, so the slavic tribes started to call them this way. (doubt that the horizon of knowledge in those times contained what was more on the west, though one should consider that future France was risen from the remnants of the western frankish empire and Franks were germanic tribe).

LOL, I am a Khrustal'yan, #TeamTutberidzeForProgress for ever ;-) they will be in the lead and pushing the envelope for some time to come and they are an interesting team to follow.

The main thing is that the enemies do not break this team. It will be very disappointing. They complement each other.

Oh dear :sad21:

Sorry i totally misunderstood (it was very late here when i posted that )

About those youtube comments: just ignore them, trolls exist in all countries and speak all languages.

Peter The Great had nothing to do with the word “немцы”. The name “Niemcy” already existed probably in pre-Christian Slavic tribes and is the word the Germans have been officially called in Poland since probably VIII century, long before the Russians even existed. So the word is (1) not Russian but Slavic, (2) has existed for over 1000 years and (3) there are others Slavs than Russians in the world.

You are basically right.

I do not know how the Poles called the Germans in the 8th century. It is strange that someone else remembers)))))

The word "Немцы" really appeared before Peter 1. But it was hardly used. Under Peter 1, this word was often used to refer to all Western Europeans, in the middle of the 19th century it was attached only to the Germans.

I never meant to say that only russians are slavs, there are dozens of cultures and languages in eastern europe that shares the same heritage, and to be fair Slavs existed before Russia was a thing, with Kievan Rus' as their first real empire.

About the word “немцы” a russian teacher i know always told me russians refer to the German people with that word because of that story (i did some research afterwards and couldn't truly prove otherwise) and that is still true to this day, i don't doubt the word existed before or even that all europeans were referred as “немцы” before.

Good luck to both Russian ladies today. Evgenia and Anna are both wonderful in their own way. I hope they both have performances to be proud of. Anna is a technical master and Evgenia has really become a mature, elegant skater.

So you think, that people who said Sasha’s been sick (or Alina’s been going through puberty last year) have been making up excuses? Did I get it right?

Is Sasha sick? Do other skaters skate sick and injured? And didn’t people post constantly last season about Alina being sick and injured. And I didn’t mention puberty - these girls all go through it so it’s not really an excuse- it’s another challenge all the ladies face as athletes.
My point is that just because your favorite skater doesn’t perform to YOUR expectations doesn’t mean she’s injured or sick. All of these athletes are human and may not win every event. People should stop with the rumors and let the girls skate as they will.
