2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

To be fair the 2018 results aren't a clear representation of her skills - she skated with the flu.- as did several members of Cain camp. ( I know Alex K was pretty sick and still skated)

I’m sure she was actually sick..... but it’s not like 2018 results were out of the ordinary for her or abnormally low. This is where she always ended up... in top 10 range but not near podium.

Yeah and did a photoshoot with Julep Beauty. She is really going full tilt with the PR and social media right now. It has me a tad worried because it's such a 180.

As long as Gracie is grounded in not paying attention to the negative (or positive) press then I don't see anything wrong with it - skating is an expensive sport the girl's gotta pay for it somehow.

It shouldn't be a huge surprise. I think she likes the limelight. She thrives in it. It might bring out the best in her skating. Maybe we will soon see Gracie fully back saying "I am Gracie hear me roar! I want my national title back and I want it now!" world look out Gracie is back and there is going to be trouble!

I agree that I think she likes the limelight, but I would side-eye anything like what you described - when she was first on the senior circuit she did not seem to thrive with the spotlight and given her performances of late she's still not competitive for podiums - doing any kind of 'hear me roar' marketing baloney is going a little too far until she's doing something more than barely qualifying for nationals, struggling to do her old technical content which is not competitive in the premiere competitions of ladies figure skating.

I’m worried about the coaching situation. But I mean she IS beautiful. On the other hand, modeling seems like it would bring pressure to lose weight. I guess we just have to trust her.

If she can get some sponsorships on the strength of her comeback story, I'm ok with that. She's been through a lot, and there is going to be pressure on her whether she welcomes it or not. I'm sure NBC will pump her up as a title contender leading up to Nationals, as they promoted her as a gold medal contender in Sochi. Everyone loves a comeback story, but those of us here probably have more realistic expectations than the casual fan as far as where she is in that process. I think a top 6 finish would be a huge achievement, and even a top 10 placement would require improvement over her previous outing. Alysa, Bradie, and Mariah are on top of their game and competing as well as they possibly can, so I hope the Gracie story at Nationals doesn't overshadow their impressive achievements this season.

Agree, and yet, I suspect NBC will milk the Gracie Gold angle ad nauseaum. A shame as Mariah, Bradie and Alysa have earned the right to be the focus of Nationals this year.

Oh Gracie. You can't call places like Springfield, MO "definitely a flyover city."

Spousal unit was born in Springfield, Missouri. Of course he was born in Springfield because Bolivar, Missouri was too small to have a hospital. He’s OK with Gracie calling Springfield a flyover city. He says you don’t want to know what Bolivar was. ;)

And didn’t Gracie grow up in a small Midwestern town? I’m not sure she meant this as a sign of disrespect .

I hope Bradie does well this week and puts out skates she can be proud of (especially against the quad/3A girls). Then (hopefully) she can carry that momentum to nationals and win (or finish second because of Alysa lol)!

I’m feeling sorry for Gracie after reading some of these posts. It sounds like some are already resenting her for having the courage and strength to want to come back to skating. I doubt her competitors and skating family will be too upset to see her getting a mention on NBC. She is a National Champion, and placed 4th at the Olympics. This is the girl that at her best had the potential to beat Medvedeva/ when Medvedeva was at her peak. I’m happy for her and can’t wait to see her compete. No matter where she places, I’m excited to have her back.
Alysa, Mariah and Bradie will all get their own attention. They also deserve it.

She grew up in Springfield, MO and then moved to Springfield,IL! She is definitely a small(ish) town girl.

What would concern me is the coaching split and then the sudden jump back into doing a lot of media. Which may suggest that her coach was holding her back from doing some of those things (yet at the same time getting flack for promoting her). But honestly I'd rather see her do a quad on a jump harness than see her doing a media junket whirlwind. I have empathy for her and am rooting for her comeback but she isn't "back" yet.

You shouldn't feel sorry for her. She's just doing the same stuff that we rolled our eyes at when Ashley was doing it at the tail-end of her competitive career. But if people were s talking about her spending time posting stuff on instagram and not working on run-throughs like they said she should then they definitely shouldn't be liking all of this. In the end it's a sport and you have to put your head down and do the work.

I'm always so torn about Bradie. I feel like she doesn't get the attention she deserves for the quality she puts out but then on the other hand it might actually be healthier for Bradie to plod along and not have the stress that comes with a lot of hype.

It wouldn't surprise me if she lays low and then shows up with a 3A or quad next season. The artistry is there already imo (the rate at which she was able to improve her artistry is quite astounding). She skates beautifully and she skates big. Just need to cure the URs and maybe get a mega jump.

Also there’s nothing bad about doing one or several sponsorships. Maybe she needs something to offset coaching fees, etc. Who knows. Some people are a bit judgmental and seem to think they know what’s best for her, but she seems happy. I hope she continues to improve for nationals.

But this is what I don’t understand, the talk about run-throughs appears to be nothing but pure speculation .

I have seen nothing, no proof, no articles, no anything that actually showed that Gracie wasn’t doing run-throughs. Just speculation. I remember when I asked was there anything to support the speculation, one answer I received was well look at how tired she was. So, nothing to support the speculation.

And of course posting on Instagram has diddly squat to do with whether someone is practicing and how long they are practicing and how they are practicing. Again, speculation

I wish Gracie the best and I hope she achieves whatever results she’s looking for at Nationals.

I'm not sure it has anything to do with the coach switch. She's now qualified for Nationals. It's a more natural time to do media than before sectionals would have been. Now, whether it's a good idea is another matter, but I wouldn't be surprised if she could use the money.

Every skater I follow posts stuff on Twitter and IG. Every one. Some even find time to like some of my posts. And it’s VERY clear she’s done the work. She went from nothing to 3rd at Regionals and then improved her score by 40 points to win 3rd at Sectionals. People had her not getting out of Regionals, then had her not making minimum TES or not placing on top 4. She did both. I’m more worried about her being on social media because it seems so many people hate her.

Gracie has dominated a lot of the discussion on this thread, even though she has only competed twice. Whether that conversation is good, bad, or indifferent, she is getting more attention on here and in the media than all the other US ladies put together. I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing, but it has been interesting to see what people think is ok to speculate and what isn't.
