Evgenia Medvedeva

Yes, but she also said "maybe a senior B", so she is willing to compete. I don´t believe it that she does not want to be included in the spare list..

Europeans is really close and she has Wizard of Oz and new boots to break in. I hope she is an alternative for Worlds. With Worlds in Montreal, it would be stupid not to have her.

Didn't compete at RusNats fully. Totally ignoring the fact that INTERNATIONALLY her score is the fourth highest of the Russians, just after the 3A. They don't need her anymore.

They don't need her anymore and they don't want her anymore.

I think that even if Zhenya becomes really competitive in the next Olympic season and performs an incredible performance in the Nationals they will underestimate her for not giving her a spot to Beijing.

God, Zhenya get out of there right now! There's still time!

Well, Liza is still around & she's 23. Liza had to deal with it before Evgenia.

Dont have to be all gloom & doom. Evgenia will try her hardest but at the same time taking care of her health.

My mom keeps asking me why she just doesn‘t compete for Canada. I tell her, well, she doesn‘t want that. Personally, I both understand and don‘t understand it. I‘m not a sportswoman, so maybe I would feel differently if I was. But I would have not as much of a problem representing another country if it meant I got the chance to fulfill my dreams. For me, a flag and my personal success isn‘t as closely tied. For Evgenia, however, it is. She loves her country. Just remember her happily ripping off the scarf of her Olympic jacket, just to reveal the Russian flag underneath. Remember what she‘s done to try and help get Russia to compete under their flag at the OG. It’s important to her and we have to respect that. Would it be easier if she competed for Canada, for example? Yes. But she doesn‘t want that and has said so repeatedly. And it‘s okay with me. I‘ll still support her even if I would have made a different decision.

I do find it strangely ironic that this is the girl some utter morons called a traitor, though. She could have made everything so much easier for herself but she didn‘t! Precisely because she loves her country and only wants to represent it!

I think about how Zhenya and her team will approach her training process now. Will she train as in the off season?

In addition, all her training mates who have already competed in Nationals are qualifying for Worlds. It will be very difficult for her to see them training for Worlds and she doesn't. I hope it doesn't affect her psychologically. She was in such good physical and psychological shape. I know she is strong but it's very hard and she has already suffered a lot. And more if she knows that she could perfectly have qualified if it wasn't for her boot. She was really bound hand and foot in this situation and nobody helped her. How unfair and how ironic when we know what she helped so that her country and other athletes could go to OG.

Getting her a pair of boots so she could at least compete was nothing for RusFed compared to everything she has done for them. It's the absolute ungratefulness.

I do not think getting a new boot would have helped that much. You heard more than one skater already telling us about how hard it is to jump in new ones. Even if they are edea ones. It could have been still the same situation that she would have withdrawn.

I think she will train just as hard. But maybe not so many run throughs, more individual elements. Plus, she has been training hard for a long time, she can use this time to train, without the pressure of competition. I want to believe this will make her an even stronger skater.

Yes, I know. But the problem is the ways in which this whole issue was tried.

I think about her and her coach trying to get a pair of boots in a store and it's not to believe. That's why I talk about the ingratitude of RusFed.

All true. What she did at the Olympics for Russia on the ice and especially off the ice was incredible. For Zhenya to even have the wherewithal go to meet with the bigwigs of the ioc to help get Russia in the games as OAR it's probably the greatest performance of her life. That should always be remembered and she should never be considered a traitor in any way shape or form.

I agree with everything Maia said.
It makes me very sad and angry how the Russian federation is treating her after all she's done for them.

Never say never, I think there will come a time (maybe alredy now?) where she must decided Figure Skating or Country.

And honestly, I would be the first to support that decision. But how would that even work? We‘ve already talked about it and the Russian federation doesn‘t even have to release her. If she does it now, there might be the chance that she won‘t even be able to compete at the Olympics. If she truly wanted to make a change, she would have to have something in hand to make a deal with the fed. Something along the lines of “You let me leave and I‘ll keep my mouth shut.“ If she doesn‘t, I see no way Russia would ever let their two time World Champ and OG silver medalist compete for another country.

Canadian Federation would also have to pay RusFed a fee. For example the German Federation had to pay aorund 30k-40k to get Bruno Massot released from the French Federation. Releasing Zhenya would be much more expensive.
Also she would have to sit out 1 year of competing internationaly and I doubt she would be able to get a citizenship in just 1 year.

Zhenya only wants to compete for Russia and I respect that. She loves her country.

I wonder if RusFed named the european team but are keeping Zhenya in mind for the world team as an alternate? I also sometimes wonder if they essentially told her that her season is over by withdrawing which is why she announced so quickly that shes done for the season + next years music

Exactly. Imo, if she‘d wanted to make that change she would have had to make it directly after the Olympics and alongside the whole coaching change business. It would have given her the time to work out the issues and she could have used the time she‘d have to sit out in competition to get used to the new technique. It would have been an even bigger drama than just the coaching change but at least she would have been off the radar for a bit. Now, it‘s too late, I think. And there‘s more money involved as well, such as sponsorships and stuff like that. It’s not as easy to simply change country and especially not for an athlete as decorated as Evgenia.

Oh, I respect it as well. I would be happy if she chose to represent Canada and it would actually work out because then I‘d get to see her more often. But if she doesn‘t want that and I‘m pretty certain she doesn‘t, then that‘s ok. It‘s her journey and her choice.

If we consider Medvyedeva's media appearance, TV interview etc as authoritative, it is what she said. No doubt, she and her mother had a personal meeting with Gorshkov and other members of the FFKKR presidium and came to this decision together.

I wonder about reserves for Worlds at this moment, but we'll know about those after Russian Cup concluded, February 22.

How it all works out in practice with having shows, perhaps/probably more shows, and travelling the world over, living and training in Canada in between, we don't know.

First she'll have New Year to celebrate, family, friends, feast, fun to clear her mind.

When is her first performance in Wizard of Oz on the agenda?

I guess so. I still suspect they wanted her to compete.

I think she named her music so quickly because it‘s a way to keep the retirement rumors at bay.

Her first show is tomorrow!

Her first show is tomorrow!

On the show and no boots? She might have an old pair somewhere in Moscow with friends, otherwise ...
She'll have to ride the patched up ones for a few days until proper new boots can be bought. But perhaps she's been smart enough to place an order with the big Moscow store in advance. Still ....

I gather the Concertos she managed to acquire in Krasnoyarsk weren't even her size, because they'd probably be good for the show otherwise.
