If it was me, I wouldnt go even if I've already splashed out over $100 for the ticket. No sporting event is worth that risk. And the event is pretty risky because a vast amount of the audience is from Japan as well as South Korea and China. Also ISU havent made clear the safety measures they're putting in. Will they make it mandatory for all the audience to wear face masks? Will there be temperature checking before entering? From what I can see, they still think its a low risk which clearly its not. A lot of countries in Europe have now banned audience for sporting events

Your lack of information regarding preventing transmission just goes to show you are in no position to make judgement calls about risks.

The virus is not air born transmission, masks do not prevent transmission and can in fact cause more issues as it is a fabric touching your face that can host the virus for its 6-12 hour life span in that medium.

I don't think this personal attack is relevant,
He\She didn't claim masks are necessarily effective, He just addressed a few of the "Popular" behaviours

And apart from the fact that even doctors are not yet completely sure about this specific virus,
you don't even have to go as far as masks, Simply visiting the washroom at an event like this would be enough
to catch a virus

Edit: Saw this chat, in case anybody's into knowledge about the virus

While yes for some people the disease is more risky, the at-risk demographics are the same as the garden-variety flu; most people survive it - BBC is reporting globally there's a 3.4% chance of dying of the disease. Face masks are questionable in terms of how much good they actually do, most don't fit tight enough to prevent things from getting in or out, and wearing the masks, especially if its not something a person is used to doing can actually lead to more face-touching.

In terms of Canada: there are only 94 reported cases and only 1 death and 1 case considered 'serious/critical'

I think the ISU should request if someone's ill that they not come to the event (which frankly unless they are driving there I feel that there is another hiccup like a plane that's likely to stop them), and request fans limit gifts to being packaged items, the gifts can also be picked up via a couple people with sweepers vs. the kids from the local rink. Limit official media interaction with skaters to press conference environments so close proximity is unlikely, and give skaters the option to do the autograph sessions and whatnot where they are interacting closely with fans.

Then why is everyone buying face masks and they're selling out across Asia when according to you, they are useless, and it would be just as well to have your face uncovered and breath in all the air while someone next to you have a coughing fit. I never claimed they were completely effective but it is one of the health measures that can reduce likelihood of transmission.

I thought the purpose was to keep one's own germs contained. It was not to prevent the wearer from catching the virus.

It is very common in some Asian countries to wear face masks. That is nothing new. Watch any skating event & chances are you will see some face mask wearers in the audience.

Yes but they werent selling out like crazy before the virus. Also compare the audience in the recent 4cc to the olympics in 2018. Almost all of the audience in 4cc won face masks.

To be fair, a BIG number of the 4CC audience were Japanese and/or Yuzu fans and the former wear masks a lot anyway, so would be more inclined to do so as a general precaution. This may also be the case for Worlds (Skate Canada certainly were expecting a Japanese influx, remember their website?)

If you believe so. But if I happened to be close to someone having a coughing fit, I'd rather have a face mask than without one. They do reduce spreading of droplets from an infected person so they do reduce transmission.

Actually it holds that droplet up against your face increasing the life span of the virus on a fabric medium.

I have a question: From a French article that EverChan posted earlier, if the event goes ahead, everyone will need to declare if they have been in one of the most afflicted countries (though it's getting increasingly hard to differentiate which those ones are). I came back from Italy 2 weeks ago, from a city that had no cases (Italy itself had 3 cases when I arrived and just over 300 when I left a week later). Next week, I will have been out of Italy for 3 weeks. If I continue to have no symptoms, will I be allowed into Canada and, if I am, will I be allowed into the arena?

I must say, I have tickets for the Championships. I have opted not to go. Yes, I was not happy when 60 and older became the "be careful" age. I am about to turn 61, no fair. I went back and forth for over a week on whether to go or not. I pulled the plug two days ago. Montreal keeps talking about having only 4 cases, fine. But there are people coming from all over the world. I have been to 22 US Nationals and three Worlds (Oakland, L.A. and Boston). I know how crowded it can get. But most importantly I feel it would be selfish to go to a facility that has a capacity for over 20,000 people where I am likely to spend 10-12 hours a day for five straight days and then come back home. It's not just about me, it's about the people around me. My brother went to dinner in San Francisco with his girl friend on Friday night. Yesterday he learned that a restaurant worker there tested positive for COVID-19. The restaurant is now closed and my brother is under 14 day quarantine. His medical provider will not authorize testing unless he develops symptoms. There is such a shortage of testing. I really don't think we are ready for what is ahead. These tickets were outrageously expensive. To make us ticket holders just opt on our own and not get refunds just doesn't seem right at this moment. You want to hold the competition and let those who chose to attend make that decision, fine. But to force me to throw away more than a thousand US dollars? Not right. Be responsible please.

just those needing acreditation

So it would be better for the droplet to be breathed in straight away instead of hanging on your mask?

Directly from the CDC website

CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. You should only wear a mask if a healthcare professional recommends it. A facemask should be used by people who have COVID-19 and are showing symptoms. This is to protect others from the risk of getting infected. The use of facemasks also is crucial for health workers and other people who are taking care of someone infected with COVID-19 in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

Actually it holds that droplet up against your face increasing the life span of the virus on a fabric medium.

The problem is that many who carries the virus do not know they have it, so by the time they realize and wear a mask it may be too late. With that in mind, if everyone wears a mask from the start regardless of being sick or healthy, we can at least make sure the droplets do not spread directly to someone else's face/ mask.
The next thing to worry about, then, is that those with the virus will handle their masks poorly and end up touching all over the place. That is where washing hands frequently & cleaning surfaces would help.

Together with frequent hand washing, I think that would greatly reduce the chance of catching the virus via fomites.

I believe the CDC recommendation takes into account the current supply of masks. In this case, there is a shortage of masks thus the better choice is to keep the supply for those who absolutely need them. If there are enough masks for everyone, I think the recommendation may be different... like how the WHO initially recommended wearing masks when the supply was still relatively accessible.

You know, this is the wrong way to approach the virus. Just look how the virus has spread the last days. Montreal has 4th confirmed cause, and should be happy about this and make everything to keep it that low. If you just have a look at Europe, and see the how it evolved the last days, there is actually a no brainer to cancel the whole thing or at least consider to go trough without audience. As much as I love figure skating, health comes first!

As I wrote earlier, a Norwegian hospital doctor got infected in Italy, came back, worked for 2 days, was extra careful because of stuffy nose symptoms (and because obviously he is a doctor at a hospital) and he still managed to infect several coworkers in 2 days with hospital hygiene rutine. How should masks and extra hygiene be a big help at such a major event?

There will be athletes, coaches and audience flying in from the whole world, and one or more will bring the virus somehow, it is impossible to avoid. And once the spread is ongoing under WC, people will then again bring the virus back to the home countries.

Just some facts from Norway now (5,3 million inhabitants)

- We are going into a new phase today. We had like 200 infected yesterday, and today there is 100 new confirmed cases, so we now got over 300. The first case was 26th of February.
- We have to-tre cases now with people being hospitalized, they didn´t suspect the virus when they came to the hospital, but test afterwards confirmed the virus, we don´t know how they got infected.
- Until a few days ago, almost every new case came from travel in Italy (on ski holiday), this is also almost the only one who got tested. 85 cases are linked to Italy now.
- 2-3 days ago they started get an infected case from Austria (Tyrol). Now people who have been on holiday in this area are tested, and now we have 48 cases linked to Austria, in just 3 days! There is 2 linked cases from Asia, one from Hong Kong and one from England.
- A lot of people are still being denied to get tested, unless you can prove that you have been in contact with infected, or come from one the areas: Italy, now Austria, China, Iran, South-Chorea. Because we don´t have many tests, so they are trying to save them.
- Yet still, we have 123 infected cases where the spread is unknown.
- 6 people are now in hospital with the virus, they have been sick for around 2 weeks and have started developing severe symptoms now. One of the cases is a 48 old year man, who came from holiday in Italy. He has told the national newspaper that he is feeling very sick, and has trouble breathing. Hopefully he will be ok. 2 days ago there was no one in hospital with the virus, and there has been 6 cases in just 24 hours.
- We have a lot of health workers at hospitals in quarantine, just because we havn´t done enough to prevent the spread. We finally started to put everybody who came from Italy in quarantine, and then the first health worker got infected who came from Austria and has been working afterwards, and now they have shut down a whole maternity ward at a hospital.
- We have just started cancelling events with over 500 participants
- A lot of people are not taking quarantine seriously, there are several cases about people not caring, breaking the quarantine by going to the gym, going to a party and so one.

Norway is the perfect example of how you should not behave. Taking actions AFTER the virus has spread is why we lose control.

Montreal and Canada can learn from Europe now, and take actions BEFORE and not AFTER.

USA is a perfect example of how not to behave. Turn down the WHO test kits and design your own cause only 60 countries are using the WHO test kits...what do they know? South Korea is doing 10,000 tests a day....

Most people here in the state of WA have their heads in the sand and chose to be in denile, when social distancing is needed, they go everywhere and shake hands! We are about 10 days from exponential increase if the media is to be believed.
