2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

On the somewhat upside, flexibility work is easy to do quietly and wherever you're living and I wonder if some athletes will improve their spins and spirals after a stretch where they were bored enough at home they ended up doing 'excessive' amounts of yoga, pilates, and the like.

Ooooo good point!! I would imagine that a lot of skaters will be using this time to improve their flexibility. I remember when Zhenya was injured during the olympic year she worked on her flexibility and was able to add a new spin to her program!! You just made me more excited for the new season!!

Akatieva, Zhilina, Gorbacheva, Berestovskaya, as well as someone else who can shoot the next year. The wave of new juniors 21-22 may be crazy.

Add Maria Dmitrieva and Maria Zakharova. Then we have the next group, of Sofia Titova who already has 3Lz+3T and 3A on the floor, Anastasia Marasanova with a 3Lz+3T, and Lyuba Rubtsova with 2A+3T, 3F+3T, and 3A on the floor. After that of course, Elena Kostyleva leads the bunch with her 3Lz+3T. But there will be many others, and the names will change rather fast.

Also, does Kostyleva train in Shelepen's rink?

For me, with that 3-3 Kostyleva overtook Gubanova for the best pre-novice skater of all times. Nastya had 3T and 3F before her 9th birthday, but 3Lz and 3-3 only at 10.
Not that it means much in regard to the future, but still... :agree:

It doesn't mean much in regard to the future...

Yes, very very impressive girl. Guvanova was too, well she never made it out of Russia in seniors due to the depth. There are many things that could happen between 8 and 15, hopefully Kostyleva and others of her caliber are able to keep it up for many years without health problems so we can enjoy their technical and artistic prowess

I was rewatching old Russian Nationals the other day and she had some years with not favorable judging, but at 2018 Nationals in particular she deserved better both at seniors and juniors.

Seniors - 6th despite two clean performances (SP - FS) behind:

Konstantinova who doubled her 3flip in the short and had at least a couple of uncalled underrotations in the free (the one where Tarasova crowned her as the new queen)
SP - FS

Tsurskaya popped a lutz in the free and the 2a-3t was probably under.
SP - FS

While at juniors (SP - FS) she finished 4th behind Konstantinova who had no combo in the SP and managed to go to both Junior Worlds and Senior Worlds. (we saw how that went)

Finally, the Junior Grand Prix Gold Medalist and Junior World Champion Kamila Valiyeva joins the challenge: https://www.instagram.com/p/B-czvAcpm_0, her dog playing along, interfering, not used to all this activity on the floor ;-)

To judge by the room, Kamila, just like some other skaters, is at the family dacha in a clean environment outside the city instead of the family's apartment in infected big city Moscow.

Triumph Akademy has a daily live stream planned with the group exercising in their training camp in full isolation: https://www.instagram.com/triumph_skating__academy/
Only one round of PE with Alina Gorbachyova today, since apparently they've celebrated Sof'ya Fedchenko's birthday with lots of healthy fruits and salads fit for athletes: https://www.instagram.com/sofya_fedchenko/ , interesting to watch how the sports school lessons work.

Sof'ya Samodelkina is not left behind of course: https://www.instagram.com/team_davydov_cska/ , with all kinds of exercises she performs under guidance of coach Aleksandra Kravtsova conducting online exercise courses: https://www.instagram.com/a.r.kravtsova/ In the Stories is a fun but difficult exercise with Liza Berestovskaya involving jumps and spins while throwing and catching a ball, excellent for coordination.

It's not, actually. Last season, Kostornaia-Trusova-Kanysheva swept JGPF. The previous season, Trusova-Kostornaia-Tarakanova did. This season was more difficult (and next season will be as well) because Alysa Liu is a threat with her technical layout. It's harder to make predictions because bigger elements have a lot more risk. When Alena/Sasha/Anna were only doing 2A/triple programs, it was expected that they would go clean every time. But this past season, they had at last 1 error every competition. Same with Kamila and Alysa.

No, that's wrong.
Of course everybody expect that they skate clean in all their events, not only when they try 2A/triple jumps.
Sasha started doing quads since her first Junior season. All her free programs included at least one quad didn't just consist of triples. Only at Bratislava(JWC 2018, two Quads) / JGP Yerevan (one Quad) she went clean and set 3 records.

Anna in her only one Junior season started doing quads since Test skates. Only at her first JGP event (Bratislava) she didn't try a Quad. After that she tried FS layouts with at least one quad and fell. I am counting ISU official competitions exclusively.

I got to rewatching the same Russian Nationals I think-and thought the same. Perhaps she shouldn't have said what she said in that interview, but I'm not sure she was entirely wrong.

What did Eteri mean when saying to Daria: "you skated and I'm the best"???

Eteri was joking with her - one fan shouted to her "Eteri, you're the best!" when Dasha finished her skate and was putting the blade guards on.

Finally, Maya Khromykh showing her home training routine, with two big bears looking on: https://www.instagram.com/p/B-et_LvJ7fZ/

All the Khrustalniy Kids keep exercising, no doubt there are online training sessions with their trainers conducting and checking up on the skaters. Also, many of Rozanov's young charges have posted likewise videos.

Unfortunatly, Novogorsk is now contaminated and closed: https://tass.ru/sport/8144877

Artistic gymnastics head coach Andrey Rodionenko is infected, and another unnamed gymnast. Gymnasts have been using Novogorsk facilities for a couple of weeks. And there has been an event in Novogorsk, like a Ministry of Sport meeting a couple days ago, where Alyona Kostornaya might also have been present?

The resident rhythmic gymnasts are kept in complete isolation by their head coach Irina Viner: https://tass.ru/sport/8146083, who will keep them there unless forced out? Confusing situation, who is in charge of whom and responsible for their health? https://rsport.ria.ru/20200402/1569508018.html

PS: President Putin in his just concluded live address of the nation didn't seem really authoritative and commanding either, ordering a 4 weeks paid holiday, but delegating quarantine and lock down measures to local authorities. Moscow mayor has ordered a strict lockdown, so that's perhaps why so many people who have this possibility, live at their dachas now. Hopefully they are stocked up well with food, water and fuel.

You are making me relive all of this. Ugh. Lol. It's Sad what happened to her. But nastya is still standing and hopefully if she's through puberty can show beautiful skating for years. I'm sad so many good girls have left the sport in recent years but I'm happy nastya is still out there trying. It has to be very hard the deal with struggles when the sport was pretty easy for you as a novice.

That said Nastya was so good pre novice and novice that she may have set unrealistic expectations for herself. Then when good things did not happen for her she ended up changing coaches a couple times. That's risky business in figure skating. One might say it's even Russian Roulette. ;)
