Evgenia Medvedeva returns to Eteri Tutberidze

Why not Buyanova or Plushy? If she had to have a Sambo's coach (i don't see why, since she had a no-sambo coach while still being officialy a sambo's skater), why not Tsareva? Why a coach that she left, saying that she can't successfully coach adults?

Brian said that this was in the works after Test Skates never before that, he said he and Zhenya are always blunt and open with one another, so Zhenya said to him on Monday that Eteri was an option (of four) and on Tuesday the decision was made. He said he told her she needed a physical coach in Russia, training herself and the three video sessions per week were not enough to get her back in shape. From his intervidw it seemed RusFed was involved in this. Sambo's president and Crystal rinks president said they were also involved, at least their interviews made it seem like that. They probably saw her skates at Test Skates and decided to take action.
that's a very quickly made decision...it almost seems panicked.

is it for sure Brian will not coach her at all anymore? i am glad he put her needs first under the unfortunate circumstances.

I think you know the answer.

I was thinking the same. Evgenia basically got the idea on one day, told Brian the next day (who apparently didn’t expect it), then BOOM! Next day the official announcement comes out. One would think that this sort of process would take at least a week to be sorted out, even with Evgenia already being in Russia.

Also, Eteri’s comments and Brian’s nice words make it seem like a temporary change, but the wording and tone of both the Olympics article and the interview article are hinting towards it being a permanent change? I’m honestly so confused. Like why would they use the phrases “end partnership” or “I’m grateful up to this point” if Evgenia is planning to continue with Brian later when the pandemic ceases?

I like your (not personal) naiveness. She returned to beloved mama. Actually better ask TAT and the other dinosaurs.

Who had seen this coming one year ago... Well, it has been a strange year and in the given situation it does somehow make sense, all though I was gasping the whole day. What a never ending drama!

Zhenya needs a coach, it was obvious at the test skates she can´t continue with Brian being in Canada and she can´t really go there, so if she wanted to continue skating now, which she still loves, she had to make a difficult decision. After the test skates, there may have been some other circumstances as well, maybe Rus Fed given her an ultimatum and I guess there wasn´t really a lot of options. As Eteri currently has room for senior skates, it did make sense. I can imagine this was the best choice for her now given the circumstances.

I´m kinda worried and i´m kinda not. It´s been 2 years since OG and the issues after that had time to be processed. Zhenya is older and she might find being coached by Eteri as more comfortable now. My worry is Zhenyas health and her injury. I also think she looked very tired/pale at the photo Eteri posted, but it might be the situation without coach and what to do about that, the injury, the pressure for test skate that has been exhausting and maybe she will regain her strengt and energy now that she has a coach and can really focus on just the skating.

I think the most important thing is that she want to skate and if she feels well being back with Eteri, then i´m fine. And I hope the team let her keep the programs without too many changes.

Last thing Plushy needs is another top skater. Buianova is unlikely to be motivated.

I'm sad for Zhenya because she seemed truly happy and healthy at TCC, and had a great rapport with her training mates and coaches. As Brian said, had there not been a pandemic I don't think we would be seeing this coaching change.
However, the world is currently outside of her control and I completely understand why Zhenya needed a proper full-time coach in Russia - facetime is not sustainable, never mind that the time difference between Canada and Russia was probably horrendous.

I have mixed feelings about her going back to Eteri and honestly, I don't see her improving her technical skills enough to make it out of Russia, but Zhenya is an adult now, she has been exposed to different training environments and methods of training, and we have to trust that she can make her own decisions using those experiences. I just hope she keeps her programmes!

When I saw this news, I thought it very convenient it had to be when GS was undergoing maintenance. If I was a conspiracy theorist, I would think they chose their moment wisely:unsure:

This announcement saddens me a bit, because I was hoping for Evgenia to make a comeback with the approach she had already decided to take, while not potentially reverting to the old habits. Ah, well. At least we're getting our drama, courtesy of our Russian skaters, during the Covid hiatus:rolleyes:

I cannot but say that I feel satisfied to say "I told you". And that's the case - there's my post dated 2018. When I saw Zhenya for the first time in her new image I said that she had to go and ask Eteri to take her back. I had to listen to many quite emotional responses after that. And here we are.... I wonder what happens next but I believe that they together can make things happen like they always did before. Kudos to both outstanding ladies!

On a different note. We have to live with the new design. That's OK but where are all my rewards?

I totally agree. I think this thing happened BECAUSE of Test Skates. RusFed probably gave her an ultimatum, they are funding her after all. And she technically belongs to Eteri anyway funding wise, so CSKA and Buianova for example was not an option. Flanker explained it well earlier, this might just be a temporary solution. She might (and probably) will change coach again after this strange season.

But if so, if RusFed "ordered" Eteri to take Zhenya back, it is kind of an awkward situation...

^ The staff wrote somewhere they'd be added gradually, I think. They keep adding things - the online users list appeared a while ago.
As for Evgenia's move, I was very surprised, but not gobsmacked. The situation was not looking well for her. She needed a coach who could teach her in person, and the Canadian borders remain shut. Who knows when they will open. It seems training under TAT and Buyanva led nowhere. And Evgenia doesn't have much time left if she wants to be ready for Nationals. I think her first Cup event approaching also played a role in how hurriedly the mov was carried out. Good luck to her!

I agree with you.

Btw, I read somewhere that Med has WD from the first cup. I think it is a wise decision, as it is already in a few days. She probably needs to not stress her injury and she just started training with Eteri so there is probably not any point for here to compete.

The quick decision is probably because RusFed decided this. Not Zhenya, not Eteri. At least that's my explanation for it all.
