How naive do you think it is to hold out hope that Zhenya will return to TCC after the pandemic is over? She has said she wants to skate as long as she can. I know it's extremely unlikely, but I want to dream.
I don't think it's naïve. It's certainly my first thought, that this is an arrangement for this weird and whacky pandemic season, and that at the end of it, all parties involved will re-evaluate how well it worked, and take it from there. I think at this point, we are all aware that whatever people say, it doesn't mean they are held to that forever - minds change, circumstances change. So returning to TCC is always a possibility; as uninvolved spectators, we simply don't know the probability of it occurring, and that is really down to Evgenia, RusFed, and her coaches.

Honestly, I don't think it will be possible to leave Eteri for a second time, not after all the drama, not after RusFed's president let it known today that he did not agree with Zhenya's coaching change to Brian and is glad she is finally back.. they won't let her go a second time.... Nor do have I faith that Zhenya's back will survive this season. I know I am being pessimistic, but I worry about Zhenya.

I think we are all shocked.
I will always support Zhenya, but I remain at my opinion that ET&Co have absolutely no ethics and are harmful for the sport and its spirit. Even now ET didn’t miss to cast a shadow over other girls underlining how brave and respectful Zhenya was, skating unprepared at Test Skates, contrary to others, who just withdrew…And I do hope that officially her coach will be only ET, as a last resort Dudakov too, but no Gleiheghauz…

In my opinion Zhenya was pressed and given ultimatum by the Rus Fed – either ET or nothing. And now it make sense the way she looked during the Test Skates – lost and indifferent, even the weight loss could be due to the stress from this situation. I’m convinced she didn’t want to move. There are many fan videos from the Test Skates, she did not look even once at them and she was passing by as they were not there.

It is clear that she needs a coach by her side, but they could have allowed temporary change and other solution. With the news for Sotskova it is clear now why it was not CSKA, but to be honest I wish she moved to Plushenko. The way Sasha improved is really impressive and with him I think she could’ve kept the new technique she developed with Brian. This is what is worrying me the most – that all the SS and new technique will go away. I’ll be very sad to see from her “eteriki” (the way they call these hugely prerotated, wrong edged, wrong picked jumps, example – Anna). I do hope also that at least she managed to stand up and negotiated very good terms for her like free ice, free choice of choreographer, etc. I’ll be really devasted if she skates to one of these boring recycled programs of Gleiheghauz.

Sorry for the long post….

P.S But what a day Golden Skates picked up to move to another platform and not to be available …..

She might go back but I feel if that were the case would have kept Brian as a secondary coach. As he said, he'll have no input which I think is a little strange if she's planning to go back. But I don't want to be too pessimistic.

Yep, that's what I thought about GoldenSkate, too. And I also thought about Plushenko, at least he knows personally how to deal with an injured back. I even wish that official from Fed of Saint Petersburg had told her right then over the phone about her possibilities there.

Right now, this is a wild ride, and the year has been so chaotic I don't really know what to make of anything. It could be that Brian having no input is a logistical/financial thing, because it's one thing to have two coaches when you can commute between them, and another when you get in person coaching from one, and remote from the other. I also freely admit I know next to nothing about figure skating and politicking and how national federations work for skating (can tell you about the incompetence, buffoonery and corruption in my national equestrian federation instead), so others may be correct as well that this was RusFed giving an ultimatum. But in the short span of time I have been a figure skating fan, I have at least seen that abrupt coaching changes happen, even ones we least expect, so at this point, I am ruling nothing out: Evgenia stays with Eteri, Evgenia goes back to TCC, Evgenia does something that none of us have considered a remote possibility.

I'm also just throwing words at the screen right now, because I am still in the processing-what-just-happened stage, so I do apologise for incoherence, and for any rudeness in tone. It's unintentional, and please do tell me if I'm being too aggressive.

I was so sad that I couldn't post here yesterday and be among her fans. :(

I wish she went to St.Petersburg. How great if she was on the same rink as Sima Sakhanovich. We would have great content.

Oh, Zhenya and Sima...It could have been so great. As for Zhenya training with Brian ever again, I don't think that's possible. With any other coaching team, it could work and even without any drama. But I don't see it with ET, leaving their team for the second time would be 10 times more disastrous.

I am very sad about this situation and should probably take some time outside. Maybe see back in a few months and find out what happened to Zhenya.

I'm sure it's not what she wanted. I won't believe what RusFed, Sambo, EG say and what Zhenya herself is made to say. For me the last true words from Zhenya were the ones she said at the tests skate “I want very, very much to go back to TCC with my coaches” and everything she said about Brian. Nobody changes like this in 2 days.

I appreciate that Brian has spoken about this, by his words we can know a little more about this situation.

She was pressured and without escape and RusFed took advantage of the situation. But I think it was even better to retire than to return there. Now I understand her physical deterioration and her weight loss in just a few days. She had a decision to make and it was consuming her.
I'm sure she didn't want to be separated from Brian. I think Brian knows a lot more than he said but he doesn't speak to protect her, he knows how difficult it must be for her. I had been critical with Brian for accepting Rika (although now I do not know if she will go with him) but everything he said yesterday made me realize that he really loves Zhenya and has taken care of her. Even in his words he even left the door open for her to come back to him.
Now I believe that the strong and confident Zhenya is gone. Not only she is injured, I think her body will not hold up, she is also broken inside and that is reflected in her appearance. Her smile is no longer the same and her eyes no longer shine. She looks like a living dead. She knew what it was like to be free in Canada. Train in a healthy environment and with coaches who took care of her. Now it won't be the same. I'm sure her heart is in pain today.

Sorry to be negative but I'm afraid this story doesn't end well. I am so sorry for her.

I wish that one day she can get back to Brian. That relationship was much more than coach/athlete. He cared for her like no one else did.

yes, StPet or anybody else would have been better!

I'm still so shocked that I don't know what to say. Like everyone else here, I'm not happy at all about the news. And since it came out of the blue, I'm sure that RusFed forced her to return to ET. I feel so sorry for Zhenya. I don't have a good feeling about the whole situation. It won't end well. I also wonder what Eteri's intention is. I don't want Zhenya to return to this toxic environment, I want her to return to TCC where she's being respected and treated nicely.
@Fluture: As far as I understand Brian just said that her chronic back injury came from practising the Biellman spin too much (in the past) or did I miss anything.

Thank You, Maia, such great words! I couldn't have said it better myself.

yes, StPet or anybody else would have been better!
I heard that RusFed found out and blocked her transfer to St. Petersburg. In fact, Zhenya and the St Petersburg authorities never met. Plushenko appears to have offered help 2 times. Urmanov was another possibility. But RusFed and Sambo blocked all possibilities.

Brian even said there were 4 options. EG was not handled in any of them. Zhenya told him about EG on Monday. It is obvious that she was forced.

And I have to say something else. Tatiana Tarasova really seems very false to me. I'm sure she has something to do with this too.

My God, I felt physically ill for a few minutes after reading the news. Who could have predicted that her decision to fly to Japan last March would end up causing a coach change six months later? If Zhenya hadn’t left Canada right before the borders closed, she would likely be preparing now for Skate Canada at TCC.

This young woman must have been under tremendous pressure from her skating federation to return to a local coach. I believe I underestimated the impact her moving to Orser made on the Russian skating community. I was very surprised that all Russian coaches readily agreed that her return to Eteri is both logical and long-overdue. Here is a link to comments from Tatiana Tarasova, Innа Goncharenko, Ilia Averbuk and Alexander Zhulin.

I am truly concerned for Zhenya. She looks painfully thin, to the point that I wonder whether she’s not sick with something rather than injured.

Will she manage to acclimate back to an environment where she’s being told what to do every minute of the day? Some of the trainers still appear to resent her. After tasting empowerment and artistic freedom, how long will it be before she starts feeling like a prisoner ?

While I had admire Eteri’s success as a coach, her attitude makes me cringe. What a regression for Zhenya after two years and a half of healthy relationships with Brian and Tracy.

Should she renew with success in the future, Sambo 70 will likely claim all the merit. I feel so gutted.

That's what I think too (about the role of RusFed).

Zhenya would be still in the same situation she is now if she hadn't flown to Japan. She still would have to travel to Russia for the Russian Cups and then would be stuck there due to Canadian borders being closed. Nothing would be different.
