It's probably only an 'outer diagnosis' at the moment, plus MRI scans and X-rays and such to 'look inside', but no endoscopy I'd think.
Studying the results and correllating findings by different specialists in neurochirurgy, orthopedia and other specialisms take time.
When inconclusive, more tests are needed.

She best keeps the details private until a conclusion has been reached and treatment plan agreed on.

Wether she is allowed basic conditioning, simple sliding on ice etc, we don't know.

there isn't anymore exams after MRI in neurosurgery or orthopedia .. it's the last exam that you ask to a patient when you don't know what the patient has or if she needs surgery or not

Sounds silly, I know. But even though I've been a fan of her skating from the beginning of the undefeated streak, browsing this thread and all the delightful content shared her by her fans has added so much to my appreciation.

The most charming thing of all was the number of fan videos of Zhenya's trip to the skating clinic in Mexico (wasn't it just a few weeks B.C.?). The tender affection she offered to the tiny ones who came to share a few moments on the ice with their heroine, the blushing joy on her face when someone asked if she would share a selfie; moments that seemed to show even deeper appreciation than bending her neck to receive a medal.

I'm babbling now, but it is a fan forum, I hope it is forgivable. Just hoping I have found the people who might understand.

I have many favorite skaters, but none above Zhenya that I wish I could meet and befriend. And if she should choose to enter coaching, I cannot imagine anyone I would trust more with the care of my kids.

I can't wait to see her at the circus.

Yes to everything! I totally understand you and I have the same feelings as you as a fan. For me Zhenya is also someone that totally draws me in as a person, a person with kindness and charm that I would love to get to know in person. The way she interacts with people, the way she treats and interacts with children and talks about the importance of children are so beautiful and show me what a great character she has. And I always feel like my own perception of her gets confirmed when I hear Tracy or even the ladies from the workshop in Mexico talk about how the children love Zhenya and how she treats them with so much warmth and kindness. Tracy mentioned how the young skaters at TCC all look up to Zhenya because of her kind heart, work ethic and determination. I also loved the fan who visited Zhenya two weeks ago and told the story of how they thanked Zhenya for her autograph and how Zhenya perplexed said "You what? Thank you!" She truly has an appreciation for all the people who have supported her through all these years.
Zhenya has mentioned since she was young that she wants to become a coach and recently said it was still currently her plan and I think it will be such a great path for her in the later stages of her career. I think in this often intense and tough sport, there need to be coaches who have such warmth and kindness for young skaters, but who also can teach a great work ethic at the same time and who have also experienced themselves great times and difficult times in their career, who can help to cope with that, having learned from their own experiences. Just today someone posted an old interview with Zhenya's mom on Twitter, which I want to share:

"You see, we were never working ourselves up to some crazy extent, we didn't tell her every second that she’s gonna be an Olympic champion. While saying goodbye to Zhenya before competitions I never told her that I’m waiting for her to come back with a medal. We were always competing only with ourselves. I’ve always said: “Just show what you’re capable of, what your coach taught you". A medal is just a pleasant bonus showing the teams’s work wasn't for nothing."

I think this mindset Zhenya's mom taught Zhenya is something she can pass on to young skaters, to not pressure themselves too much to the point that they crumble under it, but instead to skate for themselves and to do their best and then everything will go its way. Zhenya especially learned so much in Canada, a different side of skating and I think having experienced such two different systems will help Zhenya to find her own approach and to take the best of both.

News about Zhenya's injury:

"The world and European figure skating champion of Russia Evgenia Medvedeva was diagnosed with a pinched nerve between two vertebrae in the back, at the moment it is possible to do without surgical intervention. TASS was informed about this by two sources unrelated to each other.Medvedeva has a problem with the spine, she has a pinched nerve, so far she managed to do without surgery. Doctors are doing everything possible to fully restore the functions of the back," said one of the agency's interlocutors. "She does exercise therapy, swims in the pool, she undergoes physiotherapy, Doctors hope that all these measures will lead to a full recovery, if not, more serious non-surgical measures will be taken. "

"Evgenia Medvedeva returns to training today. The figure skater will be preparing for the upcoming starts. Officially, she will have one of the Moscow Grand Prix stages in the near future. But, according to my info, the opportunity is being considered to apply for the fourth and fifth stages of the Russian Cup in Kazan and Moscow time, respectively. If everything goes well with the back (and also if the condition of compulsory performance at two stages of the CD for the selection for the Chechen Republic remains), we may see Zhenya at both. In short, while we live. But the situation is still quite difficult"

This is just what I feared as these kinds of injuries are common in skaters and gymnasts, see Tursynbayeva and Kanysheva.

But so far the doctors reason an operation can be avoided.

According to the sources cited by TASS, Medvyedeva competing in the 4th and 5th stages is still planned.

Yevgeniya herself will probably post something soon, knowing everybody is worried.

I think a pinched nerve sounds much more optimistic than a moved spinal disc, which usually needs surgery to fix it, although someone with medical knowledge can probably offer a better and more accurate assesememt of the situation than I can do. A pinched nerve can be caused by many things, so we still do not know the cause of that..
Apparently they think Evgenia can return to training today, so I hope this means doctors think she is ok enough and that the physical therapy is enough to help her. I hope Zhenya does not rush back to training, because she thinks she needs to for the Cups.

A pinched nerve can have many causes. That they did not mention the cause worries me (a shift of the spinal discs, spinal canal stenosis etc?). Surgery is usally done when the physical therapy does not work, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that the physical therapy will work.
 
Reading Leishev'words, it's ironic that those who yesterday treated an athlete as a traitor today call as a patriot. It's also ironic that an athlete who has experienced such a situation works and trusts with these types of people. And for some of us we see this situation from the outside, besides being ironic it's sad.

Layshev despite his questionable and often times crazy interviews was often very supportive of Zhenya even after she left. On his instagram he always congratulated her on her birthday, congratulated her many times when she won medals at competitions, when she was assigned ambassador for the Summer Olympics last year, as well as wrote a post dedicated about Zhenya on the first day of school in Russia last year. In November 2018 when Zhenya was struggeling mentally in competitions he made a very supportive post for her saying that people need to support Zhenya that everyone has highs and lows in their life and that she currently needs time to adjust to new coaches and a new environment and that he is proud of her and that she will overcome this difficult period. So for me the article today was not surprising.

I wish Tutberidze would say something or they livestream a training. So far it has been silent on their end and only Laishev has been speaking up.. really hope things are going well
