Coaches' Corner

" Tutberidze does great work. But others appear to do the same. " Forecasts by the legend of coaching Tamara Moskvina

Legendary coach Tamara Moskvina talks about avoiding tension in the groups that Tutberidze and Plushenko had to deal with.
It is customary to think that in Sankt Peterburg people are a little melancholic and not living as fast as in Moscow - but this is definitely not the case with Tamara Moskvina. Within 45 minutes after a call from the Panin-Kolomenkin Memorial, I found myself in the car of the merited coach of Russia and the USSR - in her "Maybach", as she jokingly calls her Volkswagen. Tamara Nikolayevna, who will turn 80 next June, was driving briskly over the road-in-reconstruction to Lisiy Nos, answering calls and my annoying questions at the same time. And she answered, as always, wisely.

Team Tutberidze - More than Dudakov and Gleikhengauz. How Alyona Vysotskaya got into the Crystal Dome

Here's a chapter I want to read from Tamara Moskvina's (or Alexei Mishin's) biography!

Today I want to support my coach Alexeiy Nikolayevich Mishin and Liza Tuktamysheva, with whom I trained for a long time on the same ice and whom I admire for her longevity in sports, for the complex content of the programs and for her strong-willed character!
What Lisa should become today, taking into account the most difficult content among all the participants and clean skating?

Well, definitely not number 3, taking into account all her titles and achievements in sports! But what about the athlete's faith in justice?

Or we can now just skate beautifully and rotate very beautifully, and close our eyes to mistakes in jumps and not take risks, and not jump 3.5 Axels and finish higher than Lisa? And I will talk about it openly, if we want to move figure skating forward and respect the work of athletes and such great coaches as Alexei Nikolayevich Mishin !! I am for fair judging in sports, where an athlete with "ultra-si" should win the short program, as it is still, first of all, a sport of the highest achievements, and not just skating !!!!

others read the rules on bonuses and make use of them

he does not bow to the system, but lashing out like this (using these ridiculous arguments) at the judges will not do his skaters any favours

I didn't find Plushenko's comments out of line. He believes that the short (technical) program should be won by the skater who presents the hardest technical difficulty while performing the elements with excellent quality. For me, it is hard to argue against that position.

Hmm, I've never thought about it like that, but that actually is a really valid argument.

On the subject of objectivity in evaluating elements etc he is right, but it sounds like appealing to the seniority bonus and subjective criteria like 'taking risks' to me. No sensible coach advocates his athletes to take 'risks', and we've seen Tuktamysheva playing 'va banque' and taking risks last year in Nationals.
When Plyushchenko forces his charges to 'take risks' he will find himself breaking them faster than he can replace them with new purchases.

And... the drama continues:
Plushenko on the scoring of the ladies' SP at Russian Cup Stage 3

I am divided whether I support Plushy speaking out like this. It is a different thing if he does it on behalf of someone he is not affiliated with as a coach. Not sure if Mishin and Liza will appreciate the backlash that is sure to come. On the other hand, like everyone else Plushy is entitled to his opinions and can voice them on his own social media.

I can't help but note the contradiction between what he claims about Liza's technical skills (she jumped a 3A, she should be praised scores-wise for that!) and Liza's body of work (she is a world champion, she should be praised scores-wise for that!).

Personally, I don't believe much in body of work. I want whoever is best on ice to win. I gotta admit the scores in the Russian Cup have been ocasionally... strange.

What Plushenko is trying to do exactly? Liza isn't even his student. Has there ever been such a whiny coach before him?
He doesn't want fair scoring, he wants to see Tutberidze'ss skaters lose. His own skater got generous judging and it didn't bother him.
But now he is just showing lack of respect for skaters' work. It's very insulting and sad for those young skaters to be attacked like that by a coach.
Reading judges' scores, the rules and watch the actual programs can help. If steps, spins, SS, IN, TR didn't matter and if the past achievements counted in the score then he would be right.

He should just work instead of talking. He shouldn't be surprised to be called a false coach since he's more interested by media than by his skaters.

Rallying allies perhaps? Calling in old favours and debts?

I doubt Mishin really has any intention in becoming a part in Plyushchenko's battles against the system or his personal vendetta against Tutberidze.

Tuktamysheva apparently not: https://www.instagram.com/stories/liza_tuktik/2427091794561845191/ , but there we no thumbs up at the judges like in Lombardia.
