Joubert

Who choreographed Brian's SP? It is so well done, and makes him look like more than just a jumper. He's got flow and a bit of rhythm now.

His sit spins go all the way down. His back camel needs work (but who at his level does a good one?) His convoluted sitspins are fine. I'm not worried about his jumps at this stage.

Brian is gunning for Gotenberg, Los Angeles and Vancouver. Good luck to him. he will be a force by Vancouver.

Buttle

I'm amazed Jeffrey made Palgacci look so good. His lyricism is second to no one including Weir and Oda.

It's all there: lyricism, flow, stature, good jumps, spins. I gave him up after Tokyo but with this snippet, I think he will be a contender for Worlds. Who did his choreography?

Rochette

Beautiful routine and she's getting the rhythm into her skating. If she works on the boo boos and skates clean, I see her in the last group to skate and from there, who knows?

The Canadian Pairs

As much as I like Dube/Davison, once Craig takes to the ice I see him a Master Pair Partner. It's amazing how far they've come in such a short time. Duhamel is a lot better than I thought.

Delobel and Shoenfelder

Gorgeous as usual and still among the top 3 underrated teams in Ice Dancing.

added a few more. I find Alban Préaubert is actually more powerful and faster than Brian. Isn't that interesting?

The videos show that it is indeed very much early in the season and all of them need a lot of work to do. But many show some potential
Is it me or did Dube gained some weight? she looked really heavy.
I am not feeling Del/Shoes more mainstream look. They are not the best technically pair and they do not have nice classical lines like some other top pairs. Hence, they rely a lot of lifts and some creative elements and edgy choreo. Here, I am not feeling how that choreo relate to the Piano music. Besides, I hope those costumes are temporary, really ugly skirt on Isabelle.

I thought Pang and Tong's program looked like it had promise. Nice pace. Will be interesting to see it with the elements in it. I think the style and music suit them very well. Thank god, no more Phantom of the Opera.

Del/Scho looked a bit ragged, but of course this is early days in the season. Liked the program on the whole, but am not convinced by the music cuts they used. I love the music from The Piano, but the way they cut it together gave it a weird mishmash of highs and lows, rather than letting it build to a crescendo, which I think would have had more impact. It's no Freida, but I do find it more accessible than their last couple of FDs, which have choreographically been a disappointment.

My thoughts on the French ice dance team:

Just watched Delobel/Schoenfelder's dance. First of all, I absolutely loved the music. Great choice. It's not as original as Bonnie & Clyde, but I think I prefer it. I think it can grow and improve as the season goes on.

Her split position in this lift was rather unattractive. Also, her second position in the dance spin was not good either and really distracting.

Also in some moments, it seemed like Olivier used his arms well, but in others, he didn't know what to do with them. His skating skills are so fab. This dance really highlighted him - I barely noticed Isabelle at all. I did notice her dress, though, and I didn't like it at all.

P/B are so original. Can't wait to see this in competition.

C/J was nice and "pretty", but rather unmemorable.

I thought it was Plushenko, what with all that arm waving and the gloves and all. If that was Brian Joubert (I still don't believe it), then he has certainly taken a page out of Plushenko's arm waving = choreography book. That program was empty. It was jump - arm waving - jump - arm waving....

Buttle's program was a thousand times more choreographically complex and pure Buttle. I love the way that the choreography brings out the showman in Jeff and he really makes most of the other men look like they are doing nothing out on the ice but set up jumps. Buttle's actually skating too. It's refreshing.

As for Delobel & Schoenfelder, they never looked at each other once during the entire program and I agree with the person who said that the program does not build. It does not have the proper progression of highs and lows building to a crescendo. It's all on one level and does not seem to go anywhere. meh.

Edited to add:
Wow. Just watched Evora and Ladwig. They had the skate of their lives! They are the new Tai and Randy. I have not seen pairs skating this good in years and years and years.

Evora and Ladwig look great! :thumbsup: Those lifts are something else! Their unison is amazing for this early in the season. I hope they get the jumps together!

I have understood that David Wilson has done Buttle´s choreography for some time now. My guess is that it is by him. Anyway, this Pagliacci choreography is my favourite from the men I have seen so far. Wonderfully artistic and in the same time including all those "little" details that will gather CoP scores as always. A choreography for Weir to watch as he always is complaining about CoP, LOL.

From Joubert´s sp I have earlier written on another forum this opinion: For a skater who doesn´t have much interpretation talent and is rather wooden on the ice, the sp-music fits Joubert well. I found the programme boring.

joubert's pants are just too tight. i can't concentrate on his skating for half of the time i was either fixated on his butt or his wildly flailing jazz hands.
although i found the step sequence pretty interesting..

Preaubert- Continuing in his unique style, the program fits him.

Mabee - Looking very top six. Nothing like beautiful flow into and out of a jump and sweeping footwork. This might be a break thru this season.

Virtue/Moir - That 'Dark Eyes' is haunting. Depending on other teams, these two seem to be on the podium this season.

McLaughlin/Brubaker - As much as I believe they are the wave-of-the-future for American Pairs, I think lyrical music is not the best way for them to go.

Evora/Ladwiq - Always lovely, and this program is fine.

Carron/Jost - I like this pair but this choreo is soo complicated and it shows how hard they are working at it half way through the music.

By the way, I love all these prelim showings of what will be. and I hope those bringing them will bring more. Except for Buttle's which was for me a perfect choreographic piece, none can compare with the prelim of Lambiel's Flamenco last season.

I have added Savchenko & Szolkowy and a couple of other pairs' short programs. I love S&S' short program, very original. They skated really well.

Evora/Ladwiq's choreography is also very unique although they are still rough around the edge.

Buttle has been one of my favorites for several seasons, now. But in his position as last LP skater at World's 2007, (following the rousing performances of Joubert and Daisuke (sp) )he skated like a deer in headlights. Granted, he had missed most of the year with an injury--but he appeared as a lightweight amongst heavyweights! It is clear that Jeff will have to skate 100 percent to medal at any of the Major International events (this year, namely World's). Sorry to say, but he must get his 3-Axel secure (been wonky for a few seasons now), and I guess it's cruel to mention a quad! He's got to have it! And it's not going to be sufficient to rotate it and then crumple to the ice (as usual). I think he loses credibility with that habit (as Inoue and Baldwin have just about done with their throw 3 axel.) He must nail it!

He is a real stylist. A dapper artist. But he has to back that up with the jumps!
