there are still plenty of good men... orzel, phan, nguyen, toman, sadovsky, nadeau... much more interesting than the depleted ladies field without cotop and pineault... (big sigh for ladies)
In Junior Women, Lia is starting #31, Michelle is #35, and Fiona is #25. In Senior Women, Amelia is #30, Madeline is #29, and Alison is #26

Preferences vary.
Of this group, I think Sadovsky and Nadeau bring something unique and interesting. Orzel to some extent. I'm less intrigued by the others, but I'm always ready to have my mind changed, provided they earn it. Still, the absence of Gogolev and Messing will be felt.
I'll probably not even bother to watch the ladies. That's not a nationalistic slam; I probably won't watch the US ladies either. My GS friends will alert me if anything is worth watching at either competition, and I'll catch it on video.

I remember seeing a video where Roman Sadovsky mentioned something... I found the video

In this video he mentioned he just finished skating. Date of video is 12/08. He mentioned this event is a qualifier for Nationals and that he usually skips this event. So, not sure if this means he had to skate or not. Considering this was his first event, it makes sense for him to skate anyways, for practice.
I think some of the athletes missing might have byes to Nationals like Messing. If you got a medal in last years Nationals. I wish I knew the rules. Messing competed in Skate America and might just want to only compete at Nationals.
Sadovsky is my favourite Canadian, so, I’m happy I get to see him skate and most likely guarantee his spot for Nationals.

I would not be surprised if at least the national team has byes, plus some for injury or exceptional circumstances (like Gogolev in the US) for athletes with a good track record.
Most elite athletes skip sectionals and challenge in normal years, but this year, more of them chose to compete due to a lack of competitive opportunities.

What is the Challenge event relative to the sectional events that took place last year? I understand that the Challenge is the qualifier to nationals. Were the sectionals qualifiers to the Challenge or were they separate events?
The sectionals were qualifiers to Challenge. Unlike in the US, different sections qualify a different number of skaters to Challenge, depending on the size of the section; there is a table listing all the sections and the number of skaters who qualify to Challenge from that section.

thank you so much! How many sectionals took place this year? Do you know where I could find the results of the sectionals that happened? I’d like to find out more about some of the skaters I don’t recognize.

you can find the results of each section on the website for each section... which is pretty much by province. Here is Patinage Quebec's results page https://resultats.patinage.qc.ca/championnats-a-section-quebec-patinage-canada-2021/
Also, the sections are basically one section per province. (oh, I see 4everchan said that). The only exception is that the territories don't have their own sections, but are tacked on to a nearby province. So BC section has Yukon Territory as well as BC and Alberta section has NWT and Nunavut. Geographically it would make more sense to have Nunavut with Ontario or Quebec, but Nunavut used to be part of NWT, so it is still in a section with it.
Don't worry too much about skaters you don't recognize: just enjoy them and prepare to be surprised.

I’m really enjoying this virtual competition so far! Easy to follow along while working. I love how you can see the protocol breakdown after every skate. I enjoyed the senior Pairs. I’m right now watching the Junior Ladies and there are so many skaters at the same level. 5/7 groups done. Two more to go.

KMT and Michael's new short program is super-fun.
Yes. I really enjoyed their performance. They were the class of the field in the short program. Also, Junior Ladies is close. Anyone can win. I can’t wait to watch the competition tmrw. Junior Men SP and Senior Pairs. There are only 8 Pairs teams. Does that mean everyone qualifies to Nationals?
Walsh/Michaud aren't at Challenge (Evelyn had a sprained ankle at time of filming), but they have a bye and are planning to be at Nationals, so that will knock out one team.
I'm also not sure if Ruest/Wolfe are healthy and/or planning to compete (I feel like I heard a rumour they're out for the season due to injury but don't know from where or if it's confirmed), so they could knock out another team.
I think there are at least a couple of pairs with byes (Walsh/Michaud and Ruest/Wolfe), and there will only be 8 senior pairs at Nationals, so no. Depends on how many teams actually use their byes. I definitely expect Walsh/Michaud to use theirs.

Ted interviewed Skate Canada's president, Leanna Caron, during the broadcast, and she confirmed that Canada is going to bid on the 2024 World Championships, and also that they intend to host a Grand Prix Final in the near future. She didn't name prospective host cities.
