there are still plenty of good men... orzel, phan, nguyen, toman, sadovsky, nadeau... much more interesting than the depleted ladies field without cotop and pineault... (big sigh for ladies)Such disappointing news today.
Messing and Gogolev not competing in Canada, Torgashev not competing in US Nats.
The list of Canadian men I'm really interested in is not long, and now two of them are out. Maybe someone new will rise to take advantage of the opportunity, or perhaps a stalwart will rejuvenate my interest. Always hopeful!
In Junior Women, Lia is starting #31, Michelle is #35, and Fiona is #25. In Senior Women, Amelia is #30, Madeline is #29, and Alison is #26Several of the top junior women from Ontario are missing: Lia Periera (1st at sectionals), Michelle Lee (2nd), Fiona Bombardier (7th). Amelia Orzel is missing from Senior women (2nd at sectionals). Hopefully Madeline and Allison are missing because they have a bye. Fewer skaters seemed to be allowed to compete than last year’s challenge (no more than 20) but perhaps that all that qualified and wished to/could compete. Really looking forward to watching this event.

I remember seeing a video where Roman Sadovsky mentioned something... I found the video
In this video he mentioned he just finished skating. Date of video is 12/08. He mentioned this event is a qualifier for Nationals and that he usually skips this event. So, not sure if this means he had to skate or not. Considering this was his first event, it makes sense for him to skate anyways, for practice.- YouTube

I think some of the athletes missing might have byes to Nationals like Messing. If you got a medal in last years Nationals. I wish I knew the rules. Messing competed in Skate America and might just want to only compete at Nationals.
Sadovsky is my favourite Canadian, so, I’m happy I get to see him skate and most likely guarantee his spot for Nationals.
The sectionals were qualifiers to Challenge. Unlike in the US, different sections qualify a different number of skaters to Challenge, depending on the size of the section; there is a table listing all the sections and the number of skaters who qualify to Challenge from that section. What is the Challenge event relative to the sectional events that took place last year? I understand that the Challenge is the qualifier to nationals. Were the sectionals qualifiers to the Challenge or were they separate events?

you can find the results of each section on the website for each section... which is pretty much by province. Here is Patinage Quebec's results page https://resultats.patinage.qc.ca/championnats-a-section-quebec-patinage-canada-2021/thank you so much! How many sectionals took place this year? Do you know where I could find the results of the sectionals that happened? I’d like to find out more about some of the skaters I don’t recognize.
Also, the sections are basically one section per province. (oh, I see 4everchan said that). The only exception is that the territories don't have their own sections, but are tacked on to a nearby province. So BC section has Yukon Territory as well as BC and Alberta section has NWT and Nunavut. Geographically it would make more sense to have Nunavut with Ontario or Quebec, but Nunavut used to be part of NWT, so it is still in a section with it.you can find the results of each section on the website for each section... which is pretty much by province. One of the top pairs in Canadian figure skating will miss their first competition in nearly a year because of a “fluke” injury.
Londoner Evelyn Walsh sprained an ankle during a recent on-ice session, which kept her and partner Trennt Michaud from participating in this week’s Skate Canada Challenge virtual meet. Her two-week recovery forced the Olympic team contenders to miss the deadline to record video submissions at an approved challenge hub in Aylmer.
With the Gretzky centre closed to other BSC members and the general public, some might wonder why certain skaters are still able to train.
Following last spring’s initial lockdown, several governing sports bodies began working toward a plan that would see their athletes remain training if another lockdown occurred.
One area where the push was strongest was from sports whose athletes were trying to make the 2021 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. Even though figure skaters don’t fall into that category, there are still major events for them in the future – the Winter Olympic Games and Winter Youth Olympic Games.
Not wanting its skaters to fall behind others in the world, Skate Canada and Skate Ontario put together a list of skaters it hoped could continue training during a lockdown. That list was approved by the government and health officials. The athletes needed to be identified as junior, senior or NextGen skaters training for either of the mentioned Olympic Games.
In total, the list contains 22 pairs skaters from Ontario, of which 12 train out of the Brant Skating Club. They include Lily Wilberforce and Aidan Wright, Brooke McIntosh and Ben Mimar, Justine Brasseur and Zachary Daleman, Patricia Andrew and Stephen Adcock, Evelyn Walsh and Trennt Michaud and Kirsten Moore-Towers and Mike Marinaro.
Yes. I really enjoyed their performance. They were the class of the field in the short program. Also, Junior Ladies is close. Anyone can win. I can’t wait to watch the competition tmrw. Junior Men SP and Senior Pairs. There are only 8 Pairs teams. Does that mean everyone qualifies to Nationals?KMT and Michael's new short program is super-fun.
Walsh/Michaud aren't at Challenge (Evelyn had a sprained ankle at time of filming), but they have a bye and are planning to be at Nationals, so that will knock out one team.Yes. I think there are at least a couple of pairs with byes (Walsh/Michaud and Ruest/Wolfe), and there will only be 8 senior pairs at Nationals, so no. Depends on how many teams actually use their byes. I definitely expect Walsh/Michaud to use theirs.Yes. I really enjoyed their performance. They were the class of the field in the short program. Also, Junior Ladies is close. Anyone can win.
