Jason Brown

gosh i’m incredibly nervous for the free! i was looking up skate america scores, and i think depending how jason and vincent skates, there’s definitely a possibility that jason could get silver. and as always with jason skating last my nerves will be shot, getting all my wine ready asap!!

Congratulations to Jason on the bronze! I was thinking he could have got silver, but alas...

I love how in character he is! At the beginning of his program he gave such quality stink-eye I thought they had put the wrong music on by mistake

Also...he makes leg kicks flawless, I could actually watch an entire program of him doing those.

If there's Worlds this season he better be there! 😊

Jason!! It was so good except for the pop. But seriously- he hasn’t competed since last February. Now he has his feet back under him again. I think he’ll use this as a learning experience. I wanted silver for him too but I think just having competed will be motivating.

And I personally invite anyone who whines about him not landing a quad to take up figure skating, go land a quad in competition and come back and tell me how easy it is.

Sigh, not what i hoped for, but not a disaster either in all fairness! And considering this is it's first run through in competition he gets a pass!

To nab from jackie's tweets, in the press conference Jason said "Today, it was first time out - I hope that I can play off an audience to get more energy. I was more focused on pacing the program right now not having competed it before and not burn out at the end. I held back a bit a the beginning" and I think that's fair - I definitely think he suffered from lack of audience atmosphere, and seemed more measured in his skating/movements. He also lost some levels on the step sequence and spins - I think through trying to match the music. I'm sure they'll work on cleaning that up - this is a work in progress!

And importantly, he stayed in the top three and I would say is more than guaranteed a spot to worlds which is most important (and I should imagine, the Olympic team).

I still think my ultimate olympic combination would be the Sinnerman SP and Schindler's List FS :love2:

Edit; To tag on to this, Jason also said "As far as the long, that I don't know. We've played with the idea of going back to an old program for the free skate or staying with this one. It's these two options - I'm not 100% sure. I'm definitely keeping the short for another year"

I think the old free skate has to be Schindler's List - whilst I think there's so much potential for Slaughter; I just think SL is made for the Olympic Stage. SINNERMAN'S LIST LET'S GOOOOOO!!

These times are tough, but I'm sure Jason will have great competitions/results in the future. He just needs to get into the place where he was last year after Nationals and 4CC when he seemed so focused and strong. That got interrupted abruptly and then not being able to compete as he would in a normal season. He needs to compete. Hopefully autumn will come with the usual Challengers and GPs and he'll surely be on that winning wave again.
He walks away with a medal and he did not pop the quad, so it's a win still.
And I think his programs this season are very difficult too.

It was an interesting free skate comp. Neither Nathan nor Vince nor Jason skated their absolute best, but they skated well enough. All three had some jump issues, Jason had uncharacteristically low levels on a spin and the step sequence. But they all clearly tried their best. This has been the most difficult season. I definitely felt that Jason held back tonight. Vince went into his program really confident, but then faltered a bit and Nathan seemed stressed. But ultimately the focus of all three held, and while I would have loved to see Jason with a silver, the placements were correct. I do agree that Schindler's List would be a better fit for the Olympic season. I don't find Slaughter particularly compelling. I don't think Jason does either. I think he's playing against himself with that one. I think David is trying to nudge Jason out of his comfort zone, but Jason is 26. He has a very distinct style and voice. Schindler's List amplified that and Slaughter mutes it. Sinnerman amplifies it big time! I am definitely in the Schindler's List with Sinnerman camp. I felt about Slaughter that it was a little like Simon and Garfunkle, interesting choice, but not really Jason. I vote for letting Jason shine, rather than having him try to figure out where he fits into the choreo.

Jason was wonderful. The critics can be politely (or not) reminded that he now has bronze in his Nationals and took silver in the last major international competition held (4CC this year, the GPs don't count as they were basically domestic) which is better than pretty much everyone in the field except two or three names. How many other singles skaters in the IJS era can show that in their tenth (is it?) year of competing?

Once Jason started his FS, I forgot he was going for the quad, so I wasn't expecting the fall and had a heart attack for a sec before I registered that was his quad attempt. Then I had another mini heart attack when he popped the axel and thought for a minute he might not hang onto 3rd. But it all worked out, I can breathe easy now. Congratulations, Jason!!! His SP is hands-down THE best SP of the year, in my opinion.

I posted Jason's free skate (without commentary) here: https://youtu.be/ECqW6JquaNo

Enjoy!
You are my favourite person right now, thankyou!

(My first meeting of the day ran over, and I missed part of Jason. I couldn't very well say "hey, uh, gotta go, Jason" so I haven't had a chance to watch it properly yet.)

One thing's for sure - who was complaining we couldn't see him practice groups? We won't ever lose him again in that shirt!

He looked a little underdone for mine, but that was honestly to be expected. For the first competition of the year, this was actually superb. I will feel a little sad if this is the only time we see Slaughter, because it did need a chance and unfortunately just because of timing it will only get skated once (yeah, we're not getting Worlds).

On a more casual viewing, I like this program much better. There's lots of little details, and I think with a real crowd and more mileage this would be a showstopper. He looked a bit cautious at the start, which is understandable, and kind of made some of the movements understated. That split jump-3F-double stag jump needs +5 GOE every goddamn time.

The wretched V made its appearance on the second combo spin, which I actually noticed in real time - he didn't hold the sit forward for two, so he had no sit spin in the whole spin. He actually rushed a couple of positions on that spin, so I would even encourage a little removal of choreo if required in order for him to be able to hold his positions and fill out that spin. He was mighty close to having problems with the first foot of his closing camel spin also. But there's also the possibility that that's just a lack of competition running of this program.

Also, may I say, that slightly scruffy 5 o'clock shadow he had going on for this program was a good look. Sinnerman, indeed.

I see Jackie is #oneofus and is trying to manifest "Sinnerman's List" for the Olympic season!

I feel it's a Simon&Garfunkel situation with Jason's FS. I wish Rohene was his only choreographer 'cause I see a pattern with David Wilson and it's not a good one (exept for Schindler's List where Jason actually wanted to skate the music and no one had to convince him to wait for it to grow on him). If you look at it, he was very good in the SP and then went on to lose levels on spins and steps in the FS. It reminded me of 2018-2019 Jason underperforming with his free, but brilliant with the Rohene short.

I think the program is great! I believe nerves got to him, but he was also underscored on several spins, jumps and footwork. The decision of who would win this men’s competition was made before the SP. Unfortunately, over scoring will continue through the Olympics.
