New Format for Dancing With the Stars

Your opinions are yours, Wolfgang as is every one elses, but the bottom line is that it is a TV show and ratings count more than the competition. I, personally, don't believe in the call-in vote as exactly accurate. If Helio is dropped, who will replace him?

iMHO, he will be tied in the last contest with Sabrina. I will further predict, she will win since there may have been some complaints about women never winning.

Jane will get a new TV drama about a country lawyer, and Marie will be cast in a Broaway musical because she can dance. Cameron (he did that big jump to his knees - ouch) will get some gigs in hospital dramas.

And that's the way it is in Showbizland.

Thank you, Joe! (I kind of hoped you'd check it out, as you seem to be the resident dance connisseur...er...spelling. You know what I mean.) My pro there, Tibor, normally does Smooth with me, and he said last night that after Ohio we can/should start Standard--not just to help the Smooth, but he thinks I'll be better at it as I'm more relaxed when in closed position.

And yeah...showbiz. I'm not getting the Helio love, but I know a lot of non-dancers who think he's great. He'll be around to the end, Sabrina, and Jane the dark horse. She looked lovely in that Viennese (Carrie Ann, shut the frell up about the lifts! Or bust EVERYONE for it.) A little too much turnout but otherwise very nice, and I am so the pot calling the kettle there. Cameron has to go. He bores me. I keep forgetting Mel as well.

And, I continue my campaign: fire the DWTS music director. Whoever did the music choices (except "Mr. Bojangles"--how did they accidentally stumble onto a song that's actually a Viennese?) is obviously a crack addict making the decisions while high.

Ok...I cannot believe that there are that many Dallas Mavricks fans out there that are voting for Mark Cuban!!

I agree, the music selections are just horrible. Pop songs made into the musik version are just horrible!!

I'm not particularly a Dallas Mavericks fan, and I like Mark Cuban. He's fun to watch, moreso than Marie Osmond (shticky), Jennie Garth (aching) or Melanie Brown (clomping).

Some of the songs are ridiculous, but apparently that's not uncommon in ballroom. After people online joked about the Bon Jovi paso dobles, I was watching the Ohio Star Ball on PBS and a Bon Jovi song appeared during the standard competition. So out of place.

I think the big big problem with music on Dancing with the Stars is they try never to repeat a song. Some pop songs are great fits, such as "Every Breath You Take" for the rumba or "Walk Like an Egyptian" for the quickstep.

Pixie--my problem isn't using pop songs. The problem is they don't put a regulated beat on them. I've cha cha'd to "Sexy Back" and I've heard "Vogue" used in competition, and Igor and Julia did an awesome slow fox/quickstep showcase to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" at last year's OSB. But on DWTS, it's like they pick some random piece of music and play it in the background while the dancers do choreography. Not to mention they sing it live, which is not always good for regulated tempo.

(Likewise, there are some songs that I never want to hear again--for example, "Every Breath You Take." Which is, yes, an American Rhumba (it's too fast for a decent International, though) but still...make the music stop. Ditto "Pon de Replay", much as I like it, a newly-overplayed Samba.)

I think trying to never repeat a song is what's getting DWTS into such hot water. Because they always have to find a new cha-cha, new mambo, new tango, they're running out of decent, appropriate songs. Also, some singers may not want to license their work for the show. If you need X number of new tangos per season, you get some winners and then you get Jesse's Girl. Bootylicious made a superb samba, but it got one use never to appear again. Joey Lawrence was in George Michael hell. It's the opposite of figure skating, where no one cares that Swan Lake, Carmen and Giselle have been done to death. It's the opposite of regular ballroom competitions, where certain music is done to death. Just a touch of repetition would help minimize Superman for the paso.

Pixie, I guarantee you, if every dance team had to dance the Rhumba to Siboney, they would all show they can not do the Rhumba.

Regarding music - There are lots of tunes out there (many of them without any 'copyrights' on them due to age) that would be more than appropriate.
Perfect example: Why not dance a Viennese Waltz to, oh, I don't know, a Viennese Waltz......?
If ABC need a CD, I can send them a few......plenty enough for the next 65 seasons of DwtS.........
Ditto for Tango.
Or Rumba.
Or whatever.......
My local community center, who have Swing dancing 3 times a week, have apparently about 100 times the collection of real, actual Swing music ABC do......

This show tune/ musical/ film score crap is getting old.

Updated final prediction:
Sabrina beats Cameron narrowly by virtue of judges votes (actual dancing ability) over popularity contest votes.
Honorable mention to Jennie Garth and Jane Seymour, who are both doing a great job but don't dance for a living like Sabrina does.

I totally agree about the music. I do not know why they insist on using pop music for ballroom/Latin dance. Who can dance to "Clementine" or "Ghost Busters"? It makes no sense to me. WHY do they not use dance music? I suppose that is their way of dumbing it down for the public. Maybe they do not give the public enough credit.

I missed last night's show but read about it on the internet. That middle judge (the CEO of the program) does not like Marie. They have to get rid of a lady to keep the sexes on par. It will be Marie to go tonight.

The show is managed for ratings. That's important for its success. ABC would not have it any other way. I do believe the results of the call-in vote give an idea for the producer to keep everything running smoothly. Ethnics, Race, High call-in tally are all important.

jumping in though I don't like/watch the show

I wonder if the music used is because it's more recognizable to younger fans than say an actual piece of music (most pop I don't really consider music lol)

Watching So You Think You Can Dance? they use a lot of everything and I think it's a good mix... but I also think it's a better show all the way around from the celeb dancers...

I was surprised at the results last night. They took out another male which means the remainder is 4 Ladies to 2 Males. Definitely a Lady must go next week.

I agree with the music being too pop for these classic ballroom dances, but that is in line with getting the ratings, imo.

It's also in line with what's used in actual ballroom competitions, with a few exceptions. Except Blackpool, of course, but they are incredibly stuffy there. (And no, you wouldn't want them to use Blackpool music. Trust me, you'd want to blow your brains out after two rounds. All the Blackpool music got taken off our studio's system after the owner announced he'd had it and never wanted to hear it again. And he was a Blackpool finalist.*)

*Blackpool = the single biggest and most prestigious ballroom comp there is, and from what I'm told by English friends the only possible reason any sane person would want to go to Blackpool the town. To be a semi-finalist (ie, to make it out of first round, and quarters and into semi-finals) is prestigious. To be a finalist is EXTREMELY prestigious. To WIN...well, you have arrived. Being a finalist is also borderline unheard of for American couples. (My pro is from Northern Ireland.)

Wasn't Blackpool a sort of 'swanky' and 'in' resort type of city about 100 or so years ago?

Yes. Apparently it's considered quite tacky now, at least according to my UK friends. But it's still Mecca where ballroom dancers are concerned. Maybe someday...

I just wanted to say thank you to Juliet and Joe for all of the very informative posts. I've learned more about Ballroom Dancing in the last few minutes reading this thread than I have before. Thanks!! :)

Lad...Have you checked CTV's site? I thought DWTS was part of their Broadband Network thing this year.

"Jane". There's no Y in her name.

And whoops. Apparently not. How's that for a shocking elimination?

Sorry, there's a woman at work that spells her name that way. At least you knew who I meant.

I'm shocked too.
