2020-21 Russian Men's figure skating

Not sure on the likelihood of getting 3 spots nor would I pressure the guys with it. Guess it depends on the form of the Japanese, Americans, Kevin, Jun-hwan, the Canadian guy, other Euro contenders etc.

Two is doable. Kolyada just needs top 10 even if the 2nd skater doesn't qualify for the FP, if Kolyada holds top 10 then that's two spots. Just don't pull a Aymoz/SHF Euro disaster or Gachinski/Voronov 2012 Worlds disaster and they will be fine. Send the guy who earns it.

P.S. Danielian may show up at the final in 3 weeks but a final decision will be made closer to the event. Recovered everything but the quad per Sharova.

Oh, that’s great news about Danielian.

I am hoping they give Aliev time to recover. It’s still 2 months till the Worlds. He feels like the most solid person, unless Kondratyuk shines again at CoR Final or Ignatov tenaciously podiums again? I understand how many problems both of them have, but if they can repeat those performances, and depending on how they place, shouldn’t one of them get a chance, like Danielian got last year with Eu?

And some people didn't even want to send Danielian to Euros either. They wanted to shaft him for Makar :palmf:

Send the person who earns it. They could surprise and turn out to be quite decent.

Ironic that this year it is Ignatov’s head they try to look over. Though this year is a crazy, crazy year & they are trying to create competitive environment... but team Russian men is just insanely hard to predict. So, in the end, yeah, let Ignatov try? Or, if they manage to get absolutely everyone together at CoR final send the two winners?

Well Kolyada is going to matter what. Pretty sure he's already been named. Then there is just one more spot. It's almost as bad as the ladies. In both cases the reigning Euros champion might not make this years World's team and would have been a lock last year. :( (Although I do think Aliona's chances are higher but that's mostly because the ladies have 3 spots while the men have 2.)

Kolyada has never fallen below 8th place even with sinusitis. I don't see why it would happen now. And Kolyada and Aliev have brought three spots before. But it does need Aliev in good shape.

No Kolyada has a spot. The 2nd is undecided. Let the others try and not just give it to Aliev just because. If Kolyada competes like he did the last few competition, the lost of the 2nd spot will be hard.

Like I said, send the one who earns it, otherwise what's the point of having qualifications?

yes, it’s the second spot, that should have been Ignatov’s if they didn’t say shortly before nationals that it wouldn’t be decided by the nationals. I think nationals did bring some clarity, even if unfortunately it meant that Mozalev was out of the picture (💔).

This year was even harder on Aliev who was so poised last year... 🥲 Ignatov is amazing, but he is not your commonly held idea of a figure skater with very obvious ‘out of gas half-way’ trouble. And, unlike the last year, when Danielian just nailed it, the 16 to 18 group shows extremes in both directions, probably because of the pressure since there is quite a few of them who have comparable and volatile assets on top of it being a crazy year with access to training problems...

I agree, just take top two of CoR final as long as main contenders from Nationals all compete. A lot can happen in the 4 months between Nationals and Worlds, CoR might give a better picture of what shape skaters will be in by then.

Would be nice to see Danielian back! I don't mind if he doesn't have a quad or a Worlds spot, just eager to see his Scheherazade free. Kondratiuk skated splendidly to classical mash-up Swan Lake today, Tatsuki Machida is my favourite Firebird, more guys should take on ballet programmes :D

You can't send two winners, there are two spots and one is taken. It has been stated the Russian champions have secured that spot. The second spot should be decided in the cup final. I'd love to see Mark, but I'm afraid his PCS will be very low just because of first appearance.

Kolyada should be top two there anyways. (I assume he qualified despite missing one of the cups).
No pressure on him though. He's dominated every Russian competition this season when you account for SP + FP scores - he's shown he deserves to go. Everybody is talking about top 10, but given worlds unpredictability he could be a medal threat (is Hanyu even going to worlds?)

I agree, I was saying he needn't even go there to get the spot. Don't even know what is better for his psychology, to go or not to go. I love him as a skater so much that I still shudder to think of the past. I was really scared to watch the jump fest, it made me think of the past.
BTW, when I am thinking of the mistakes in the programmes he was doing before the switch to Mishin, I can mostly remember falls and pops. Now if he makes a mistake, it's predominantly step-out all of which look similar. Can it be that it is a stage in his learning to save jumps?

Top 10 is for maintaining spots, so in essence, it doesn't matter who they send for the 2nd spot, Kolyada + 2nd guy should be able to keep 2. Medaling is another discussion. I don't care who medals as long as my country brings home gold.

Nah. He might go but the winners of RusNats already secured their spot at Worlds.

That's what I said. He doesn't even have to go to the cup final. His spot is secured.
did you read what I originally wrote.... I said he deserves to go, and you replied saying "Nah, the winner of Rusnats already secured their spot at worlds" .... This is really confusing for me to follow.

I honestly don’t see anyone doubting that Kolyada would go, or that he would medal in CoR. I think we are all discussing the second spot.

also, be checking back for news on potential Danielian participation in CoR final

I think chasingneverland meant Kolyada doesn't need to go to COR final as he already qualified for Worlds based on Nationals. Maybe a slight miscommunication.

I guess whether or not he goes to COR Final, it would be fair to give the second spot to the top Not-Kolyada man there.
