I don't see why Anna's nationals titles are more prestigious than Aliona's GPF and Euros titles though. It's only really this year that 3A have had anyone able to challenge them domestically and GPF also had Rika. I do think there's a case to be made for Anna's win over clean Kamila this year though considering Kami's Olympic favourite status.

I don't either. IMO, we should consider the entire body of their medals. That way, we'll take into account Shcherbakova's own international silvers, and Kostornaia's own National placements. I definitely do think Russian Nationals matters, because it contains very strong skaters, even Olympic medalists and world medalists (and that counts in both their favors!).

It's a shame she's stuck in Russia, because she's long past her sport in Russia. She is done there. Finito. If she really wants to compete, her only option is to switch to another country. Otherwise, why continue to skate? I mean, it's exercise and she hopefully likes doing it, but it's still an expensive hobby and it sounds like her parents don't have much money. If I were her parent, I'd be strongly encouraging her to retire. She achieved a lot and she's still young to find another avenue to succeed in.
It's the same thing with the other nastya as well. I don't think either of these two have skated internationally in over 2 years so they could switch countries fairly easily and by switching countries I mean go to Estonia or Lithuania or Sweden a country that is not that far from Moscow or St. Petersburg.

The coach hopping Hurts.

Gubanova has always been my favourite against Nugumanova, but Liza impressed me very much at the nationals.
I think she might have more grit and love to the sport, I hope she'll get some int'l spots next season.

Just look at the faces of kids in the background - she's spreading figure skating addiction hard! :love2:

THIS! I've made the same point before. In fact, I've taken it a step further: I believe Anya's three consecutive RusNats titles are the single most impressive accomplishment in modern ladies skating...perhaps even modern skating across all disciplines.

At the end of the day, a victory is only as impressive as the competition you had to triumph over. By this measure, any single one of Anya's RusNats titles is arguably more impressive than Alina's Olympic victory, Zhenya's Worlds titles, Aliona's GPF/Euros, etc.. (Before you disagree, take a second to think through whether the competition at these events was at nearly the same level as RusNats.)

Just think about some of the names Anya had to beat to win her RusNats titles: Trusova, Kostornaia, Valieva, Zagitova, Medvedeva, Tsurskaya, Tuktamysheva, Samodurova, Usacheva...and on it goes. I can't think of any international competition in recent years that was tougher to win than RusNats has been the past three years. And Anya came out on top not only once, but ALL THREE TIMES. It still blows my mind.

So, yeah, I find it tough to take seriously anyone who would question Anya's bona fides. They're clearly not knowledgeable enough about skating to understand that Russian domestic events have surpassed international events. I mean, yeah, winning an event like the Olympics is cool from a "historical significance" and PR standpoint, but go back and look at the competitors from Pyeongchang and ask yourself if it was really that impressive compared to what Anya has accomplished with RusNats.
Doug you took it even further than I did! Much further.

I guess people I feel they get to diminish Anya by saying she's never won a major international title. Well for starters she's never skated in one. And if people consider European ladies a major international title then that makes Russian ladies Nationals three times that maybe more.

At this point let's hope we have a world championship with an excellent field with skaters hungry to show off their best. It's been a tough year for everybody on and off the field of play.

They aren’t more prestigious, Anna stans just want to make it seem that way since she’s not winning those titles.
Oh...but the competition is so much harder in Russia!
No actually the same people were at those junior worlds, europeans, and GPF where Anna didn’t win. Those people just skaters better on the days of those INTERNATIONAL competitions. Where as I’ve said before have just a modicum of less bias judging.

Maybe Anna will win worlds this year, maybe not. Only time will tell.

it's hard to say because Nugu hasn't been as good or better than Nastia in many years. Nastia didn't really have a chance to compete this year because of covid and getting shut down and quarantined a few times.

Like you brakes I've been very impressed with Little Liza this year. but she still barely broke 200 at Russian Nationals with the best skate of her senior career so they're still holding her back score wise. I mean was 18 year old Liza really almost 30 points less than 14 year old Dasha? Nyet! And we know they do the same hold you down scoring with her teammates Maria and Anastasia. The three of them bring different kind of beautiful skating and I hope they continue but they're getting squeezed and it will be tougher in the future as the 14 year old Russians move into seniors in the next couple years. if these three girls want to continue long term they are going to have to do it in another country. Sad but true.

All of you discussing this makes me realize that this season was really unfortunate for Aliona. Had worlds been held, she likely would've been world champion, now she'll probably never get that chance again.
Unbelievable bad luck for aliona and Anna and Sasha. that would have been the greatest threesome from one country in any ladies discipline ever at a world championships.

Will we get the three of them at Worlds this year? Aliona needs to get things together for that to happen.

Unfortunately, Anja can only be judged "fair" by the jumping jacks of the Federation. It's a shame.
speaking of fair it's not fair Anna did not get a chance to do a quad in the SP at euros. your favorite Sasha too for that matter was handicapped by not being able to do a quad in the SP. let's take Alionas awesome 3A out of the SP and see how she would have done season!

I also think by now the quads are easier to learn and do in competition than triple axels are. It's so bizarre they won't allow the ladies to do a quad in the SP but they do in the free skate. It actually handicaps skaters like Anna and your favorite Sasha in the SP.. it's undeniable at this point.

I think the only World podium sweep ever was the US in 91, it would be kind of crazy to have another one 20 years later.
Watching Aliona get choreography over a cell phone was pretty discouraging tho :frown:

I am fairly confident this rule will be changed by the next Olympics. The quad revolution really only just started, the rules need a few years to catch up.

She should've won a World title at her best.
I don't see this year's Worlds be much safer than last year's, but somehow they decided to host it anyway. As is unfortunate for everyone, I think the odds have been all the way stacked against Aliona.

Ballet choreographer Alexander Stёpin had been advising these two and others of Moskvina's. He'd previously worked with Mishina/Galiamov at the Velikovs with Natalia Pecherskaia.

Vaganova has an abundance of material on the web, but's there next-to-nothing showing Stёpin in action.
I uprooted this 30-second snippet of his class in dance-mime at the Vaganova Academy.

I find this tiny glimpse rather mesmerising.

Dunno about competitions, but if they don't put her on next year's national team list (for funding), I will start riots. 😠

You completely miss the point. It was about something completely different. And quads in the SP have just as little to do with it as Trusova. Here someone actually claims in all seriousness that Russian judges judge nationals more fairly than judges at international competitions.
