Ladies' Long Program

I do think this event solved the mystery, was there a new ISU focus on being tough on calling jumps or was there just a really tough caller at SA? I think SC shows the latter to be true whether that be good or bad.

Agreed...and that's based on Yukari's performance imo

BTW,
Its not that I don't like Yukari, I just don't like her jumps, and I felt she was elevated in the sp

I think the tech caller was generous to Emily. She had 2 moments on jumps where it really appeared to me she was underrotated, the 1st Salchow and the last Axel, that I don't see as being caught on the protocols. Almost all of her jumps appeared labored. She has her work cut out BIG TIME for Nationals.

Her jumps didn't look underrotated to me...the landing edges didn't have the "hook" that most underrotated jumps have except for maybe a slight one on the 3A. Mao's downgraded 3R did have it, even if the combo as a whole looked very smooth.

Well the judges were very tough on Mao. Both of her 3-3s were downgraded, she got -1.6 on her flutz. One thing I don't understand is why the judges were so lenient on Nakano, her "triple axel" scored higher than any of the ones Mao did last year.

hmmm...I'll have to rewatch her performance

Thank you. Mao seems to have a lot more going for her than just jumps, since her jump content was off today and she still won the LP. I hope that this will be televised in the U.S. sounds a lot more exciting than SA.

Congrats to the medal winners!!!

One thing I don't understand, and someone please clarify, is the triple loop. Isn't prerotation required? Last week, at Skate America, Zhang and Meissner were downgraded on their loop attempts, and they both prerotate that jump. Also, today, Asada was downgraded, and I could see that she prerotated as well.
Help porfavor:biggrin:

The loop is definitely the most prone to unjustified downgrading...Miki Ando was downgraded on the look repeatedly in her 3Z-3R combo in the 05-06 season, and her attempts were pretty clean. Mao and Joannie both got +GOE on their solo loops today, though, so I don't think the caller was as harsh.

So proud of Joannie for improving her Lutz consistency, but her spins still need a lot of attention. Her centering and speed are not where they need to be on those spins. Great fight from her though overall! Sad about the pops late in the program, but it's still early in the season and she had enough tech content here to medal.

I agree. I thought her spins were the wobbliest part of the program. It's even more annoying when you think that if she had landed those jumps instead of popping them she would have been pushing Asada for first in the LP.

I also appreciate that Joannie offers a full plate of triples (Lutz, flip, loop, Salchow, and toe). Mao does not do the Salchow nor the toe. Yukari does not do the loop. Emily does not do the loop.

Joannie must really be mad at herself for leaving out even the second last 2A. She would have had 2nd place with it! Even though I feel she should have been 2nd. Her PCS scores even though 2nd highest were still too low for a clean sharp performance. Again I think it has to do with the reverse skating order as to what PCS marks you receive. I also would have had Ashley ahead of Emily and Laura a lot further down then 7th! She got higher PCS marks then Cynthia!!!! My how the mighty have fallen. It seems like the judegs are not going to give her a break until she gets her jumps back.

Question for the posters watching the live feed (I was not one of them) Was Asada in a class of her own?
Absolutely. She did a few double Axels, made a passing attempt at a triple-triple -- and still totally blew everyone else off the ice. No contest. (IMHO.)

Yes, at some point I think the judges are going to have to address the issue of skaters now coming up who don't have (and don't even appear to be trying to learn) some of the basic triples. I would not favour a deduction, but perhaps a bonus, for demonstrating ability on all of the basic triples (minus axel — too few skaters do it, or perhaps you could do all basic triples, or 3x plus all but one of the basic triples.)

Mao won with only two types of triple (flip and loop). Is that really fair???

IMO, Joannie or Nakano should have won the gold, because both did 5 types of triples, not just 2!!

She did do triple lutz, so 3 different types. She really should learn to do a triple toe or triple salchow though, to have them in her back pocket.

I'm not impressed at all with her only having a flutz, flip, and loop in her arsenal. The judges seem to love her though.

My impressions from the CBC coverage.

Cynthia Phaneuf! You go girl! Second half of the program was super.

OK, I am now officially a Leslie Hawker fan. Lovely program, well done. ::clap:  Her spins are her weakest ekements, IMHO.

They didn't show Ashley Wagner. :ohwell:

Joannie versus Yukari. I could go either way. Both excellent. The triple Axel tipped the balance. Yukari's leg wrap still drives me nuts, but I guess it doesn't lose her any CoP points.

The triple Axel sure looked underrotated to me, but hey! it's a triple Axel! I guess tyhe tech specialist knows best.

Did you guys see the interview with Mao afterward. She spent the whole time looking at the big screen TV off to the side while the interviewer was talking to Morosov, and also while the translator was translating her answers to the interviewer. Looked like she didn't know (or care) that the interviewer was even there.

They asked Morozov, "We overheard you telling Mao before the performance, 'you're the best.' Were you trying to build up her confidence?"

Morozov responded a little abruptly, "You were spying on me?" Then he said, "I don't have to build up anyone's confidence, I was just telling the truth." :)

She normally has a triple axel too. It is interesting to see the top 2 Japanese girls Asada and Ando looking like they dont have their full arsenal or their normal speed early in the season.

Well, she got dinged heavily for the flutz and she even got the loop in the combo downgraded, she got a level 1 on the spiral sequence...and she still ran away with it.

If the flutz penalty is going to remain this heavy (Ashley Wagner was also dinged), both Yu-Na and Carolina will be very happy come Worlds...
