I believe Daria herself did say her 4S was more consistent than her 3A (or it was going better). So, I am more hopeful for the 4S right now. Also I recall her 3S at Channel One Trophy where she had to unwrap pretty high in the air, which made me think that maybe she's getting a lot of height for her salchows in preparation for a 4S.
 
Olympic team looking even more interesting than ever. Here's my thoughts in order of likelihood making the team -


Ksenia - Missing a season of competition really hurts her PCS (and it's always been undermined in my opinion), and she was never "particularly stable" with her current layout in the past. Good on her for already trying 4T in the competition, though I think she will need more time than next season...(Welp, I just LOVE seing her skate and I cant wait to see her new programs - they never disappoint!)

Liza T - could she possibly make the team? What a legend if she does (ofc, she's already one!). She does have quad indeed, and that 3A is looking quite promising. PCS is catching up today (probably only temporarily for Worlds, sigh*). Her performance at Worlds will be quite telling with her standing among international judges, and how she handle big competitions (she hasn't done one in years!)

Alena - things are not looking ideal here. Like many people said above, I'm not so concerned with her technical ability rn but really her coaching team. They seem to have no idea what they're doing. Everything about her PCS (skating skills, interpretation) and even steps, spins are degrading, and I think this degradation already started after her first junior season though Eteri's team managed to hide it quite well (this is probably controversial).

Daria - hmm...everyone says she's getting 3A and 4S but I think she needs more time and competitions to stabilize a new layout. She's been skating to her current layout since forever, and doubt she'll have enough competitions next season to get used to a fully upgraded layout...She's a bit like Alena in her second junior season at the moment, except she doesn't have enough time.

Maya - has put herself into the conversation with 4T and 4S - though I think she's still behind Anna, Kamila, and Sasha (all at the level they're skating rn) even with 2 quads. I adore her courage and perseverance but still question her stability (ofc, you never know if someone suddenly turns on their self confidence...!)

Sasha - I hope she land her 3A at Worlds (like Maya did today with her 4T&4S!) That will really boost her self confidence. She obviously has an extremely high scoring potential - Never question Sasha's ability to jump! I have a feeling she'll get her 5quad program back in the near future...PLEASE GET A BETTER LP and I don't mind her keeping the SP.

Anna - really needs to get that 3A to secure the spot. She doesn't need 4T (I read somewhere she's getting her 4T back?). Anna has proven many times in the past that she's an incredibly tough, reliable skater, especially when the time she's most needed - I think Russia will send her for that reason alone, not to mention she's a 3 time National champion with 4F & 4LZ. If she wins Worlds this year, she's safe. PLEASE CHANGE BOTH PROGRAMS.

Kamila - probably safest of all. Russia really needs someone with stable 3A for the team competition and hers looks the most the secure to me. The only unstable factors I can think of is growth spurts and injuries... PLEASE KEEP SP AND CHANGE THE LP I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH.

Please, please everyone - STAY AWAY FROM INJURIES!

Not that it matters, but Kamila's layout was a ridiculous decision imo. She just did her first 2 clean triple axels 2 weeks ago, and immediately Eteri says, "Not good enough - go do 2 more, a quad salchow for the first time, a quad toe-triple salchow for the first time, and a backloaded quad toe for the first time. Now!" Trying out an Olympic layout makes no sense. Even if she had gone clean, it would have no bearing on what she could do in 12 months from now, or even 6 months. Eteri flexing gone too far.
Congrats to Maiia, she's not my favorite skater by any means but I was very impressed that she finally landed both quads in the same competition. Desperately needs a better program.
Daria was my favorite of the night, I just find her skating lovely and would much rather watch her skate than most of the others.
Elizaveta skated great, really earning the world spot and not just getting it because AK messed up. I hope she skates that well at Worlds - I'm not a huge fan of her skating but she was my second favorite program today.
Aliona was both better and worse than I was expecting. She jumped much better than I anticipated, the double salchow was really the only mistake though I wish she had gone for the triple. Idk anything about step sequences, I know a level 2 is bad but Idk why that's what she got. She was obviously extremely nervous, I mostly noticed how slow and expressionless she was skating. She has a long time now to recover and regroup, hopefully her luck (and the state of the world) improves, and she can be healthy and strong come next season.

Electrical engineering technically.

They do get points deducted though. They lose a point for the fall, they get negative GOE, AND it hurts their PCS. But they're starting so high that you can mathematically only deduct so much. An underrotated 4S has a BV of 7.4 while a rotated 3S has a BV of 4.2. Plus your PCS are usually higher attempting quads.

So yes, while you would have deducted more points, it isn't a folly because as the code of points stands - attempting it is better than not.

KV won yes. But she was experimenting Yuzu won Sochi Olympics flopping numerous times. KVs scoring potential is massive. Best 14 year old girl ever or at least since Tara. Obviously she's no sure thing for Olympic gold or even the Olympic team especially with Maya and Dasha nipping at her heels.

I would say the best ever in history. It's the speed she uses across the ice and into the jumps. And then there is the extension.

Why do you think trying it out makes no sense? Now's as good a time as ever isn't it, in a meaningless competition. The next time she'll have this experience under her belt, and can make use of it. What if she had not tried it and had skated a safe program cleanly? Then she'd be trying this layout for the first time next season, most likely in some important competition like a senior GP event. Isn't it better to try now and have the entire summer to use the information to their advantage?

I don‘t think the judges doing whatever they want with the GOE and PCS has a lot to do with Maths lol. And can we please not compare this to Hanyu or even Sasha? Hanyu skated the best in a terrible field, how is that even close to what happened with Khromykh and Valieva today? And Trusova won against skaters without any ultra-c elements (and we can debate about the fairness of that all we want, but it‘s another discussion altogether). Not against someone who landed two clean quads. I don‘t particularly care who of the two won and I guess with Valieva’s SP advantage, there is a valid discussion to be made. She’s also clearly the better skater. But it‘s not like the judges didn‘t do their very best to prevent the chosen star from losing against Khromykh whose reputation is that of a very inconsistent skater...

She knows that there‘s no one else they could send and made the obvious conclusion. Good for her, she’s gutsy and gritty and it finally paid off.

I wouldn't say Sofia Samodelkina's skating is "charismatic", more like she has the most elegant arms out of all the juniors and lovely stage presence and projection. The second half of her FS is charming for sure, but I don't know if charismatic is really the term I would use... more like... lovely? I don't know.

Liza Berestovskaya is indeed the most charming and adorable skater in recent years. Everything about her reminds me incredibly of little Elena Radionova, playing fun and all kinds of characters in different programs. They catch your heart even if you know absolutely nothing about figure skating. You know they both love, love the sport from the bottom of their heart.

I wouldn't say Tarusina and Samodelkina are in the same type. Tarusina reminds me a bit of Frovlova, elegant but not memorable. Samodelkina is quite talented technically though I find her style of skating more...pensive/melancholicic (I don't know the word for it!)

Alena landed her 3A's the first year she attempted them. (Alena didn't have her 3A in her second junior season.) Same with Kamila. It's not out of the question for them to help Daria do so too. The questions will come if she upgrades more than one thing.

The thing with Maiia and two quads is that Anna, Kamila, and Sasha also have two quads (and that's their watered down programs.) And all three of them can do their quads in combo. Maiia still needs to upgrade as all of Anna, Kamila, and Sasha are already doing that. But it's a good first step! :)

Sasha has the highest scoring potential but she needs to be clean. And she needs to heal completely from injuries. Although I'm hoping a good skate at World's helps her confidence. (It won't be good to lose to Rika here though and she'll need to be clean - although that also applies for Anna and Rika but they both have more leeway and get higher PCS in the event of minor disasters. Plus Rika has a more stable 3A that she can use in the SP. Also she definitely can't really lose to Liza T here.)

Anna, if she wins World's this year is probably going. Although if she can stay (relatively) consistent and slowly upgrade even more - although first bring back her 3 quad LP, her spot is probably secure.

Kamila - she's got the best combination of everyone's strengths. Unless she's injured she'll go, even if she gets outscored a couple times - especially if it's because of flukes. They'll be patient with her because she's younger and because it's not like anyone else doesn't fall on quads and 3As. (And those are the ones that have them.)
 
From my point of view as a spectator, Maiia is the one who has won the day, followed by Tukkie and Daria. Valieva had a good skate in SP. Aliona is the most exciting skater that came about in the last decade or so. Looking back in the history of the sport, I'd say that today she is something of a John Curry. I hope that she comes back, but will she?

Best 14 year old girl until Akatieva comes along, who will be the best 14 year old until the one after her arrives.

Valieva is good, great even, in many ways. But people used to say the same about the 3A and look where we are now. Utterly outclassed after they were the “ultimate best, historic trio, greatest rivalry FS had ever seen“ just last year.

I've been trying to figure out my feelings about Nana, erm, Frolova. I think she particularly stands out amongst the other CSKA skaters. I suppose yes, her choreography is a little old fashioned and stolen from Carol Heiss' 1956 long program, but I don't think that's it. I love her presentation. But I think I understand the Grandma vibe I was getting from her. I think it might be due to her coloring (hair, skin, eyes) and her classic features. But on ice she fades out and we actually think we are seeing exactly what she will look like at 90! Right?!?!

They wouldn't have done that layout if there was a World's or an Olympic spot on the line.

It actually was the PERFECT time to try it. You need to try things in competition and she had nothing to lose here. Even if she had fallen off the podium it STILL wouldn't have mattered. She's still more consistent than any of her challenges with a higher BV. She's already on the Russian senior national team and going to get 2 GP spots - which is all it would have mattered for anyone not in the running for a World's spot. Even if she fell on every jump imaginable that wouldn't change. It was an experiment in letting her have fun and try everything. Better try that where there is minimal pressure than try for the first time next year when she's a senior and there are GPF, Euros, and Olympics's spots and various titles on the line. It's like in their last year of juniors - Anna and Sasha didn't need to try their quads - and they fell ALL the time, especially Anna. They would have won without them and had a couple of disastrous skates because they did. But now both of them have quite stable 4Lzs. It's like Rika with her 3A, etc. Trying in competition is HOW you get your jumps stable - by performing them in front of judges with adrenaline and this is really the easiest time for Kamila to try.
