You're right, it is pretty weird to have something like that revealed and confirmed by credible sources in the middle of the process. I wonder whether that means Eteri will accept her and just wants a little bit more PR and drama before saying an official "yes" or ... she means to push her under this bus even deeper ...

The thing is, Eteri is in a position of power here - she knows Aliona will have no one if she refuses to take her in. Where should she go? Back to Plushenko‘s? I doubt he‘ll forgive such a move and Aliona wasn‘t high on his priority list before that anyway.

Eteri, on the other hand, has zero need for Aliona. Some have cited Zhenya‘s move to her - that‘s different. Zhenya was like their poster child for many, many years and she moved back in a time when Eteri had actually need for her to restore her reputation after both Aliona and Sasha left. Now, the only reason to take Aliona back would be to further humiliate Plushenko - but Eteri has won that “war“ a long time ago anyway. Aliona is injured, already 17, and not that likely to sustain TeamTutberidze‘s methods all too long. If Eteri accepts, Aliona can prepare herself for a hard time. If she doesn‘t...well, that‘s even worse. What other coach is there, that would take her? And she‘d have to adjust to new methods, people and a new environment all over again, in the Olympic season no less...

Can‘t believe I‘m saying this but at this point I‘m almost desperately hoping Eteri takes her back.

Agree with each word, unfortunately. I am afraid it has become so offficial, with TASS and Lashkov confirming it, that no denying by Alyona can work.

Honestly, reading about Aliona's health. I don't think the question is which coach she should go to. More like, can she actually continue to skate? Stress fractures, COVID 19, and that's just the beginning. What else? If she continues to skate, will she be able to walk?
Didn't Plush say in an interview that she has had Covid related angina? Poor Girl can't catch a break

Thanks for the replies everyone ! Well then, okay I guess. Alena is really in a tough spot right now. I tend to think she would go through living hell returning to Sambo after all the Frondforsaken drama, but she didn't seem too happy with Plushenko either, and now the info leaked it's even worse. Never been a fan of her skating but I feel very sorry for her right now. I hope she'll figure things out and manages to find a situation she can settle and be happy with.

I think Lakernik or Gorshkov would push Eteri hard to take her back. They wouldn’t want one of Rusfed’s Crown Jewels to end up with no coach at all. Especially if Aliona already expressed her desire to come back to Eteri specifically.

Eteri might also appreciate Aliona’s courage to come personally. Whether she would agree or not is still a big question though. If not, I don’t know what she will do. Yana might be already busy taking Aliona’s things out of that little house by now.

I think that Eteri might take her back. If Aliona improves even 0.1%, people will be talking about how much better a coach Eteri is than Plushenko. If the Eteri camp manages to get her 3A back, it'll be a big deal.

It's just this thing. Let's say I was a coach, a talented student of mine decided to transfer outside of the transfer window. That's not great in itself, but in a couple of months they go "oh well, didn't work out, can I come back?" To me, I'd be quite tempted to do some message sending, because if you allow such behaviour it'll lead to chaos in my opinion. And it's just quite disrespectful.

Medvedeva could be used as a comparison, but it's good to remember that even she took several years until asking to return. And the important thing is that Medvedeva was "the girl" for Eteri right, who she almost treated as her daughter. I don't see any such connection with Alena, and there will be, 5 senior girls on the group next season? 6 with Zagitova?

Clearly, I think Sambo has more to win by taking her in than throwing her out. Whichever coach she ends up with, she can recover and heal her injuries during summer, and start the season fresh. They'll be happy to be the ones who restored her jumps and her 3A instead of Plushenko. However I agree with Shayuki, personally in a similar situation I would be tempted to refuse so the person could learn actions have consequences... But well, Alena is still an emotional teenager who had a disaster season :/

this does put her in a really difficult spot, but i think it's smart to go back. i don't have much faith in her current team, as everyone else has said, it seems they don't have any sort of plan for her and Plushenko has not been interested with her like he is with Sasha. she knows she has more of a chance to be on the team next year by returning, and let's not kid ourselves- Eteri would love 2 of the 3, if not all 3, under her and not Plushenko.

Aliona knows she had the most successful season of her career with Eteri and she probably also knows Dudakov can help her with the 3A- look at all the improvements he's made with the other girls this season. i think her decision to move to Plushenko was mostly out of emotion and in the moment with not a whole lot of thought. she is still a teenager after all.

Eteri also knows by taking her back and getting her back in the shape she was last season would be a huge slap in the face to Plushenko and his team's coaching abilities.

Our drunk friend came back to insert his 5 cents.
Laishev says that “Kostornaya wants to comeback. They’re discussing it with Tutberidze, I’m not involved. It will be the way Tutberidze decides it” (not word to word translation)

How could EG not take aliona back when she looks into her eyes and saw what she went through at the Cup Final?

I will believe it when I see it.

But what happens to Young Sergei if she does return to TT?

Agree and let's not pretend like Kostornaia left with glowing words about the environment with Eteri.

Medvedeva was a bit different as the covid situation prevented her from being with Orser.

Is she still, though? There‘s already an army of other skaters who have overtaken her this season. Now Khromykh has landed those quads, Usacheva trains 4S and 3A, both are younger. Do they still need Aliona?
i don't think they are all onboard the Khromykh train quite yet. she has only been able to deliver content on the same level as Kamila or Sasha once, and Daria still regularly beats her. if Kostornaia regains her 3A and Daria does not come in with a consistent 3A or quad next year there's no way they'd push her over Aliona.

Yes, if Alyona returns to Eteri, young Sergei ends up a true loser of all this affair, having received his marching orders from all Sasha, Veronika's mom and Alyona. Poor guy, a lost prince led astray .... :(
