I meant, even if Josefin won gold or silver, the 3 spots for Sweden aren't automatic anymore (for Olympics that is). The other 2 spots will have to be "re-earned" at Nebelhorn.
Ah, ok. Well, that is not the way that I have understood it. I think you can get the spots here, and additionally you have another chance at Nebelhorn.

It's been less than a month since we saw Maiia nail two quads.

I shall remain skeptical of Khromykh's quads till we see them landed a bit more in competition, yes she landed them at the Cup Final but she fell on every other competition attempt this season. I know that Trusova and Shcherbakova weren't crazy consistent with them at first, but they had the benefit of being the only ones doing them at the time, so they could afford less consistency.

It's been over a year since we last saw Aliona land a clean 3A.

Ya'll need to get your heads out of the clouds. You can't live in the 19/20 season forever.

While I agree that continuing to allude to her 19/20 season for a source of why she is a top 'tier' skater for the Olympic team is ridiculous. Kostornaia is loved domestically by judges, even being very rough in her Cup Final performances she was still top 2 in PCS for that event

I also think that if you have a skater on the podium, you automatically get 3 spots. Didn't Tursynbaeva earn Kazakhstan 3 spots after Worlds 2019?
No. She earned 3 spots because she was the only entry. To get three spots as the only entry you have to place in the top 2. (If she was 3rd it would have been 2 spots as places 2-10 gets you two entries.)

The podium alone doesn't qualify you for 3 spots. And top 2 only qualifies you for 3 spots if you're the only entry. If Anna got 2nd and Sasha and Liza got 12th and 13th, which obviously won't happen, but if it did Russia wouldn't have 3 spots even if Anna got 2nd.

I could be completely wrong because it's confusing but each skater has to "earn" their spots to Olympics's - so both the Olympics and Nebelhorn are qualifiers. So if a skater doesn't make the FS they have to go to Nebelhorn but also only one skater/team in each discipline per country can go to Nebelhorn.

Well, obviously the ISU hasn't decided yet what to do for next season. They are probably waiting to see how this Worlds is going and if there are a lot of contestants that had to withdraw from COVID.
But, surely the original rules will still apply, and if there is a lot of withdrawals at Worlds they will add more qualification competitions next season.

They had a meeting at the beginning of the month to decide Olympic qualification.

That's actually when they confirmed the new rules.

Just wanted to ask a question about Russian domestic competitions before Worlds starts and the thread gets flooded.

It seems like Russia doesn't use the same age cutoff date for competition categories as the ISU, which uses 'before the 1st of July' of the previous season. So what cutoff date do they actually use?

Because some people have said that there is no season cutoff and they use the exact age of the person on the day of competition itself, which doesn't make any sense imo - there's just no standardisation and it doesn't make much sense that you could have to start your season as a junior and then suddenly become senior eligible in December, for example.

From the fact that they always seem to list birth year in the skater info ribbon that pops up (and in the competition entry lists), it looks like they could be using birth year to determine age - ie their age cutoff is 1st January instead of 1st July. That makes a lot more sense to me. And the fact that the competitions list birth year seems to support that, so is that how it works?

And if that's really how it is, is it maybe borrowed from something - like the age cutoff for schools maybe? Idk, I thought that they must have a reason to purposely make a different age cutoff than ISU's, so it might be used in other sports or the schooling system or something. School age cutoffs in my country are also determined by birth year, so I was wondering if it was the same over there and that's why they use the same cutoff for sports or something.

I just keep posting this:

It's funny to think that this will be a weaker field than Russian Nationals or the last GPF where there's no limiting Russia to 3 participants.
Do we expect a Russian sweep (aka Liza skate of a lifetime, Rika meltdown), or do you guys think it will be 2/3 medals instead?

I think it's better to have more modest anticipations before, just like Sasha was in her interview that was mentioned here recently, and be pleasantly surprised later.

Wait both Sofia M and Osokina are senior eligible nationally this season? I wonder why they didn't go on and compete in the senior Russian cup series so they could also try to qualify for senior nats as well as junior nats.

Sasha is such a machine 💪🏻
I wonder if she personally makes a point to do more weight training and muscle building than the other girls or if that's her natural build. But those muscles definitely show in her jumps and why her quads are huge and powerful compared to someone like Anna who's technique is based on rotating as fast&tight as humanly possible
