She did have one bad SP practice. But yeah, primarily the quads were the issue.

I would say the FS hasn't been skated yet. Let's wait for that - as we saw..ice is slippery.

If it makes you feel better, I was getting spreadsheet like accounting on why they are doomed. hahaI said the same thing and got a whole essay in reply on how clearly Anna's technique was failing her and Sasha was setting herself up to win two Olympics.
On paper is just that. It’s not tangible.

Maybe the emotions are getting the best of you, but I don't think it's so respectful to crown a champion already. Rika is still absolutely in the mix, and pleasantly surprised that Liza is also right up there too. Sasha...you never know what she's going to pull out in the free. And Anna I hope will deliver a beautiful performance. There's a long way to go.

Sasha has improved. But, she got higher marks than Kaori. The judges helped her.

Probably not respectful, might change it later. But imo, it‘s pretty much what‘s going to happen unless Anna falls three times, which she hasn‘t done before. She brought it at Nationals when she could barely breathe, she‘ll bring it here. She‘s just developed into a steely competitor, you can rely on her.
A bit. She deserves it for how tough a season she‘s had and how well she delivered despite it. This girl‘s gone through a LOT and yet she‘s here. (I remember JGPF 2018 and I honestly wouldn‘t have believed she‘d develop such competition nerves) It IS remarkable.
I just don‘t like when the scoring (and unfortunate performance by others) take out any excitement an event might have. There’s no one who can catch her unless she messes up which I wouldn‘t wish on anyone.

I've always thought it's funny and cute to say this about such tiny girl, but there is some insane power of mind and will inside that delicate frame.

Really thrilled for Liza today - when she landed that 3A, oh so solid, I was so excited, and then my internet died until Nicole Schott was receiving her scores, so I shrieked and rewound back to watch Liza's skate. She had a really good performance here today - she landed her jumps, no turn outs, her spins looked good as well. She looked pretty happy at the end of her skate as well, so fingers crossed for an equally good or even better free on Friday.
Sasha! What can I say? The conservative approach with the 2A seemed sensible, as it allowed her to add in more choreography, instead of the long glide down that she does for the 3A. Once the axel was out of the way, I could breathe again, and started to relax into enjoying her skate. She has worked very hard on her presentation of this more lyrical programme, and she is much more sensitive to the music than she used to be. It was all going so well, and then she overrotated her Lz and finished so far down the rankings. I was genuinely shocked at her score and placement; I wasn't expecting her to fall out of the final flight. Though, uh, she has previously preferred to skate before her closest competitors, so maybe this will work to her advantage. I really, really hope that she comes back strong and delivers a clean, powerful free skate.
(Just wish the commentator hadn't said she was tipped as the favourite; that's just inviting bad luck, and after poor Maé-Bérénice's injury, I was very spooked. Can somebody tell him to please not inflict commentator's curse on the skaters? My heart won't take it in the free.)
As for Anna, I was so relieved when she got through all of her jumps cleanly. I used to be able to watch her without feeling very tense, but that has changed following Nationals, and after Sasha's skate, I was on the edge of my seat. Once again, however, she delivered when she needed to, with all the pathos and yearning that flows through the music. She really does express the emotions to the very ends of her finger tips, as that final slow motion shot in the replay showed, with her fingers extending on that final note. I forget what her StSq level was, but dear me, that bobble at the start of it, that definitely was not expected. Good luck to her for the free!
Anyway, the final flight and Maé-Bérénice's accident have left me feeling that the ice was cursed today, and I am going to have to fortify myself before watching the free skate, because I am clearly not used to the stress of competition. I hope all the skaters will have performances they will be happy with on Friday, and that there are no more injuries.

That was my point. From any other Federation - where remember Sasha is Russia's #2 - Sasha would either not have qualified to the FS or would be skating in the first group tomorrow.
She'll be skating in the second to last where the judges won't hesitate to reward her for an excellent skate.

I think she would have qualified for the FS based on the strengths of her other elements but I agree that they helped her a lot on PCS. Higher than Chen, Kim, Lee and Sakamoto? No way.
They called her flip, though, which was half surprising. Has she ever gotten a call internationally before?

Not quite. They even called Trusova's Flip edge. They did so correctly, but it still is relatively strict.
Trusova's actual mistake on the combo was around 10 points, maybe 11 points. But she scored 64 instead of 10 points below her expected, which would have been around 70. Yes, she'll lose some PCS, but to be fair she didn't fall so it shouldn't be so much.
I think judges could have scored her around 68 if they wanted to save her.

Poor Sasha. She now has no choice but to go for 5 quads in the FP. Which could be another epic disaster. RSF will completely dismiss her for the Olympics if she's out of the medals. She's too risky a pick for the team. She just doesn't rise to the occasion in the big events. I think her Olympic dream for 2022 might be dashed now. A top Russian being TWELFTH???? Daria, Maiia, Alena probably went straight to the rink after seeing that performance and started working on their ultra-C, because they see Sasha is beatable for an Oly spot.
