Jason Brown

And the praise from former skaters:

1. Scott Hamilton:

Watching #WorldFigure2021 and the brilliance of @jasonbskates
What a fantastic SP! He might be bested in the air, but NO ONE can beat him when his feet are on the ice! I could watch him skate all day!

2. Asher Hill:

10s across the board! I will accept nothing less. Rohene Ward and Jason Brown amazing work! #WorldFigure #Stockholm2021 #Beijing2022 #isu #figureskating #CBCSkate

and Tai Babilonia responded: Exquisite

3. Kaetlyn Osmond

The intricacy in Jason’s program is outstanding. Transitions connecting every second of the music, showing just the true art of skating! Mixed with completely solid elements!

If only the judges saw the same thing and rewarded him with appropriate GOEs and PCS.

I gotta say guys, having witnessed the travesty of PCS scoring in the ladies free tonight... I'm worried for Jason tomorrow. I hope he goes clean, but if the scoring is anything like tonight I can see him being buried. This competition has been the most outrightly political I've seen so far - I pray Jason goes clean.

I'm actually cutting a date short to come home to see him skate, I hope he lands that quad salchow!

Well, ladies and men have different judging panels, so theoretically that shouldn’t matter. 😊

What does matter is that the men will have the same panel in the FS as they did in the SP. Since they weren’t overly generous to Jason yesterday in GOE/PCS, it’s possible they will lowball him a bit in the FS, too.

The enhanced SP protocols from Skating Scores (see below) are kind of interesting. They show where each judge is from and how he or she ranked each skater relative to all the other skaters in the event. It’s funny to see how much the scores and rankings vary from judge to judge. Unfortunately, there’s no US judge on the panel; in fact, all the judges are from Europe, with about 5 of the 9 from Russia and Eastern European countries. To state the obvious, a lot of these countries have skaters in this event, which could impact scoring. I also think Jason’s style of skating is maybe not so appreciated in some of these countries. There’s not a lot Jason can do except skate his best. Im just going to keep my fingers crossed that he’s still super happy to be competing, looks at this as an opportunity to help Team USA, and most of all, that he skates well! 🤗

In Europe there's favoritism between neighbors. For example if I'm from, say, Serbia, and you're from Bulgaria, maybe "I" will be more inclined to judge you better. If you're from, say, France and I'm from Hungary, I don't think "I'd" favor you over an American or Canadian, Japanese, etc. Of course, I personally think it's unethical, but if you take for example Eurovision Song Contest, we're so used in Europe seeing how neighbors vote for one another purely for being neighbors and closer culturally. Sweden voting for Norway (and vice versa) is the first example that comes to mind and it's notorious and the list goes on and on. There's not much European pride here as in: Oh, I'm so proud for being European. But there is pride for being from a specific country or region like for example the Balkans or the Baltic area etc, etc. (Or at least that's how I perceive it as an Easterner)

Without the q on the axel, Jason would have scored the same in the short as he scored in 2020 4CC (Around 94. PCS should have been slightly higher than 4CC I assume); he was not as sharp technically, here or in 4CC, as he was in 2019 Worlds, so let's hope it won't be very bad with the scoring. And let's not forget it's the second time he skates to this free...

I'm nervous and concerned too, but I wanna stay composed.......

I wondered if the judging demographic spread might have affected Jason’s scoring in the short. If Jason was only obliquely aware of this before the short, he truly knows what he is up against now. Best of luck to him in the free. With wings, Jason, with wings!

My poor Jason 🧡 he was so nervous for the spots and seemed so relieved with tears in his eyes at the end. Not the best score, but it's fine. Now let's see what the final group does. Good luck, Nathan!

well, there’s that.
ok, so not perfect BUT he didn’t fall. he stood up on that quad sal!!! clean SP and FS, unfortunately just too many quads by the other guys to help him move up the standings.
I do think he was lowballed on the PCS across both segments, maybe he wasn’t as technically clean as he has been before but that should be reflected in GOE (which it was), not PCS, especially as he didn’t fall.
Don’t even talk to me about that 96 for Nathan lol 🙃

Jason stood up on a 4S<, which is huge for him! And yet again, he showcased his mental strength and ability to deliver when it counts: He couldn’t know that Nathan would have that jaw droppingly perfect skate (and huge kudos to Nathan - it’s the best I’ve ever seen him!), so he pushed himself to maintain that top 7 spot, giving Nathan all the leeway he could. No he wasn’t perfect and no didn’t get a medal out of it himself, but it’s still an amazing result for him.

I do hope Jason goes back to SL next season bc I think it’s a far better program and he connects with it in a way he hasn’t done with Slaughter. Jason may never have the tech to win an Olympic medal, but Sinnerman and SL will give him the best chance to comfortably incorporate that 4S and allow him to showcase all that he does better than anyone else. 🤗

watching the replay and i didn't realise how emotional he was in the k&c! damn covid not letting tracy give him a hug! I loved the replay of her punching the air. Now I wonder, I know Jason is going back to Chicago to see his parents, but do we think we'll see him at World Team Trophy if it goes ahead? I don't know what his plans are re Canada and how difficult it would be to keep leaving the country. But I just want to see these programmes again! Hard to believe that's really only the second showing we've had of both programmes (I'm not counting ISP) - he did so well and I cannot believe that Sinnerman will keep getting better!

I've been wondering the same. Clearly he needs to stay and train in Chicago until WTT, if he'll go, until leaving for Japan. I hope they will send him if he wants to go. I think he'll be fine without Tracy and Brian for two or three weeks on his own, Junhwan and Yuzuru did it for all of the season and they were relatively fine this competition. But I don't wanna get my hopes too high with the uncertainty in the world and in our lives. He deserves it more than Vincent though. Keeping my fingers crossed.

So relieved for Jason! I know our boy handles pressure well (one of the reason we love him), but he came through like the trooper he is.

And standing up on one foot on the quad, I'll take it. Maintaining his seventh position, absent a meltdown, was the best he could have done, and no one ahead of him truly melted, and some of them had amazing skates.

And is it evening in Stockholm yet? Chag sameach, Jason! (and to all our Jewish friends) :)

Exhibition schedule is out and there is no Jason ☹️ sad that we don’t get to see him one more time, especially as he’s a fan favourite 👎🏻

It's true we are sad not to see Jason, but I have to say: as much as I love Melancholy, it's not the rousing peppy exhibition that Jason is known for, or that gala organizers might want.

Whereas no one can resist a bling filled charro costume. I know I can't:biggrin:

Part of me is wondering if he might just have booked the soonest flight back to Chicago that he could have been on after the competition was finished, I wouldn't want to be hanging round in the "bubble" any longer than I would have to be in all honesty.

Jason is going to Chicago from Stockholm and will spend a couple of weeks before going back to Canada to Quarantine. He has not mentioned WTT. They probably planned to send Nathan and Vince. The quad was definitely his best effort yet, besides 2016 SKAM, but it was downgraded. So I guess it's still not an official quad on his stats. The judging panel was definitely not Jason friendly when it came to PCs. As for Nathan, he earned those PCs today. Normally, I do find him overscored, but today he was as close to perfect as it gets. His skating skills were on display along with everything else. He and Jason both skated well and did the job they were sent there to do. I do think Jason's PCs were too low.

As for the exhibition, I expect that guest spots went to Swedish skaters and maybe others from the region. I doubt that Jason has a big fan base in Sweden. It's always nice to see him, but they were probably fairly strict about who skates.

I will be waiting to see who the US sends to Nebelhorn to fight for Team USA Men's 3rd spot. Has anyone found a video of Jason's skate online yet? It seems to be targeted for copyright infringement, which I assume is the music that he used. Everyone else seems to be up and running.

I think Jason should go to WTT (if he wants to of course). He has earned it!!!

Thinking about it, don't skaters just get allocated to WTT whether they want to go or not? I know quarantine rules could impact on practicalities of going which may change it, but all I can remember is Scott Moir at WTT saying on air how much he hated the competition.
Edit: looked at rules for 2017 WTT, and allocation of spots is based on a ranking system, and there are sanctions for the skater and possibly the team as a whole if a skater who is qualified to attend declines to participate.
