Shoma Uno: 2014-2024

I noticed Sui/Han will also not be skating in the gala, and they have no reason not to be invited because they're silver medalists. I guess maybe there is another reason we don't know yet.

I woke up this morning and immediately feel sad when I remember Shoma won't skate in the gala. I'm actually more sad about this than him missing the Worlds podium, because honestly, at this point I just want to watch him skate again and again, whenever I can. I have taken Shoma's appearance in galas for granted, then I realized he was not the top two skaters in his discipline from his country in this Worlds. So he will be less prioritized for the galas when the result is like this, even if he finished really high in comparison to others 😔

And something that I think about this morning is that... I think this Worlds was a great competition for Shoma to attend from a competitor perspective, while also clearly laying out the challenges he (and his new coaching team of course) will face going forward. It's pretty obvious that with no competitions and the uncertainty in this season, Shoma lost his competitive edge. There is no tension for him to be aware of, no sense of urgency to go to competitions to 100% nail them. The difference between his state before the pandemic and now is clear, he was fighting for survival back then and has the sharpness he may be lacking in this Worlds. Though he is pushing Champery skaters to up their game, facing off against the best of the best directly is a completely different thing. And now of course he doesn't only have to fight the skaters from other countries, even in Japan it would be a challenge with Yuma solidly in the mix to contend for the Olympic podium. Shoma definitely knows he needs to up his game to keep up going forward, and I hope he can balance that with his enjoyment for skating.

I am lowering expectations for any competition results from Shoma. Not being defeatist, but just realistic. I think he's at the point where he doesn't need to prove himself to me with results anymore, but of course he needs the results to stay in the sport. He's not the de facto #2 in Japan anymore. But it's not all doom and gloom. I believe there is still enough space in the sport for him, but maybe not always in the podiums at the highest levels. And who knows, ice is slippery and everyone has their good days and bad days. All Shoma has to do is keep himself healthy to continue fighting and improving.

That being said, this 4th place is really special to me not just because of difference with 2019 Worlds, but also, he did this after all the changes he did in his career and opening himself up more to us, his fans. He openly games, he makes silly videos, he cares for his dogs. He's training overseas with a foreign coach, speaking English here and there. He doesn't beat himself up too harshly after a missed jump and missing the podium. And he is still loved and supported by people and environment that I think are healthy, when judged by this sports' standards. The more I remember 2019 Worlds the more I cried because it had been quite a journey from that 4th place to this 4th place.

Lastly... I can't wait for new programs. Finally, I can say that 🥰 Thank you Grespi and DOMO for being there for this traumatic yet healing period in Shoma's career. Every program of Shoma gives me unique and complex feelings, and these two with their history will definitely stay with me.

I wonder, would he be allowed to record the program that he intended for the gala and post it on his YouTube channel?

He’s going back to Japan and has to quarantine for 2 weeks so we won’t see him for a while. Also he usually doesn’t post programs there.
The gala program was supposed to be Oboe Concerto most likely, maybe we’ll see it at some ice shows in the off season, I love that program 🥰

All of this. Shoma is missing that constant stimulation that many competitions provide to him and other skaters. His life will hopefully settle down once he returns to train in SWI for the next season.

Just read that Sui/Han withdrew from the gala b/c of a previous injury to Sui. I'm glad that that Japanese pair will perform as it helps to promote pairs in Japan (maybe?) for the team comp at the Olympics.

I am late for the party sorry. Many congrats to Shoma finishing 4th, at the most important season's Worlds that happens every four years, helping to secure 3 spots for Japan with Yuzuru and Yuma! His SP in particular was so energetic, electrifying and lots of joy despite the mistake. SHoma made his coach Stephane proud and smile. the Small medal really is a nice reward for his all hard work during this very difficult season for every skaters. :)

Since Sho was not invited to the Gala here is Oboe Concerto from Nagoya Festival
which he would have performed at the Gala.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lASDPsOvVcM&t=5s
This is nice to have in view of the fact that OnIcePerspectives filmed at the gala, on ice, close up. Would have been nice to see this program and the costume and Shoma like that. I'm grateful for what we did see from Shoma but just makes me want more. Jordan was so close to Kaori on the ice I thought she was going to run into him. Yuzu was heavenly, btw.

Well, this made me cry! Literally! I know there are more important things on the planet and in my small universe, but this was one of my dreams. I even commented in Shoma’s “Endless Jumps” video, a month ago, how awesome it would be to see one of his programs recorded with the same technique used for On Ice Perspectives.

I’ll have to read the forum rules to see what words I’m not allowed to write here, but I’m pretty sure everything that comes to mind right now would be off limits.

Going to wash my face...

Maybe Shoma’s fans could crowdfund a trip for Jordan Cowan to Champéry.

Thank goodness I still have ice cream in the freezer🍦

I translated German Eurosport Commentary for another place, but perhaps someone here is also interested. I mean no offense! :)

German Eurosport - Original Commentary, Shoma Uno LP, Worlds, Stockholm - Sigi Heinrich and Hendryk Schamberger
Sigi Heinrich (S): Well, and...there he is on the ice. He is with Stéphane Lambiel and there you can see that Stéphane has made a name for himself as a coach. Shoma Uno.
He is a cuddly type you just have to like or must like!

Second at the Olympics in PyeongChang behind Hanyu.

Three times, no two times second at World Championships.

Yes, brutally strong.

Hendryk Schamberger (H): Yes.

S:Brutally strong! Also the reaction! And then he cracks out another quadruple Toeloop after all AND puts a combination on it...ah...awesome! And, and...and...from my point of view Hendryk, he didn't have a choice but to attack if he wants to be in the medals somehow.

H: Yes, absolutely. Exactly that. Before I wanted to say the medals will be between the first three, and he, Messing and

S: No!

H: Kolyada will fight for the 4th place, but with that performance, he will probably not reach Hanyu, because he is 14 points ahead of Uno. But the bronze, perhaps even the silver medal, is still possible.

S: That's the way I see it, too, the way I see it, too, because he has been a little piqued on by the small Yuma Kagiyama, what am I talking about, small, both are the same size!

H: Hmmm..hehe

S:Hehe....Shoma Uno, I mean, he enjoys all of our sympathies since we watched him for the first time. I outright admit that! But today this was of course a World Class performance...

H: Yes...

S: ...that he conjured onto the swedish ice here.

H: Boah...

S: Well, these are the moments in figure skating where you can say, it's great that we can take part.

H: Exactly.

S: Really, ah...

H: That we have the privilege to see this live, really great.

S: Yes, that's really great.

Brilliant! Really. Simply Worldclass! And...and...and also this approach, this mood you can just feel, that just grows. There he stands and has to jump five metres over a twenty metre deep abyss, and he jumps and safely lands on the other side. That's the way it is. Just look at this warmth with Stéphane Lambiel, who already knows his charge has hit a big strike! And that's the situation of the competition in Japan. Kagiyama and Hanyu at the front, and he is only third of his country at this World Championship at the moment.

H:Ohh

S: Just only 184 points. Actually that's too little. In my opinion. Of course, he has less program components than Jason Brown, that's clear.

Takes the Lead.

I calculated a few more points, I admit. What about you, Hendryk?

H: Mhhm, yes, hard to say. Mmm, yes, perhaps yes. Maybe.

S: Yes, yes, Shoma Uno takes the lead.

H: He has lost some points afterwards.

S: Mmmh...

H: In the technical area, a few points.

S: Ahaha...

H: But in any case...

S: In any case. It is what it is.

Note: They don't agree with Jason's components, even if it sounds like this in the translation. It's the way they say it and the context of their other commentary which makes it obvious.

Deutsches Original

Dreimal, nein zweimal WM Zweiter.

Ja, brutal stark

Hendrik Schamberger: Ja.

s: Brutal Stark.

Vielleicht.

S: Ja, ja...Shoma Uno geht in Führung.

S:MMhh..

H: Im technischen Bereich, Paar Punkte.

S ahah

H: Aber wie dem auch sei.

S: Wie dem auch sei. Es ist so wie es ist.

This is by no means offensive to me! There was commentary like this after Shoma's sp regarding his 8's in pcs. 'On what planet does Shoma get 8's'? Unless like someone else said, if you fall or blow the back end of a combo, it should affect performance, not skating skills or other things Shoma does like no on else.

I'm moving forward b/c I know there are 3 puppies waiting in Nagoya and I'm looking forward to that happiness. Shoma was happy that Stephane was happy and no one can put a score on that.

Interesting discussion. When Shoma was Yuma’s age, he burst onto the scene and stayed on the podium for years. But the pressure he felt after the Olympics was so distressing to him. I sense he won’t go back to the place where expectations are a burden, There is no question that Shoma’s legacy is his beautiful, expressive skating and his charisma. That won’t change. Jumps may come and go. So, I agree that podium finishes are not necessarily the end goal. Right now, he’s ranked third in the ISU standings. This is not too shabby.

A little bit of thoughts for the Worlds DOMO, possibly the final (or penultimate) addition to our collection of DOMOs:

I have rewatched it a bunch of times and this DOMO is pretty... interesting to watch. For me as a hardcore fan it's hard not to notice that Shoma is behind the music almost from the start, I have to say he took longer to set up the 4S in the beginning and was behind the music afterwards. I think that also plays a part to why he stumbled in the first 4T(2T) because that's the one jumping pass that really needs to be right on time, because it's the jumping pass that precedes a significant musical change: the transition from instrumental DOMO to Callum Scott's vocals starting. He rushed that one and just didn't set it up perfectly.

At first my brain was trying to comprehend because I know Shoma was behind the music but really... the program still flows very well. There's never a sense that Shoma was off the beat, or unsynchronized with the music, even though some choreographic accents ended up fitting in different places. One of my favorite was the sharp turn of his head to stare intensely while he was doing a inside spreadeagle that was done after the lyrics "I gotta see it for myself" at 2020 CC. Here, it ended up fitting with "I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her," which was... pretty loaded combined with that burning gaze (also, he was in the corner of the judges' eyes hshshs).

I like that he managed to stay calm and get all of his levels, especially the step sequence because it started really late. It was smart for him to shorten the choreographic sequence. And even then, he still timed his hand move in the cantilever to hit the "all" in "I'm giving my all" :love2:That, coupled with the change in hand choreo from snatching something out of the air (again, see 2020 CC DOMO) to almost pushing something up, opening his hand to let it go... very poetic.

I think for people who don't watch DOMO often or watched Shoma for the first time, or even... never watched CC DOMO, this could have been their definitive version of DOMO, actually :ROFLMAO: and from the many praises and compliments about Shoma's musicality, projection and performance quality, this may as well be that.

His musicality is just something. This is gonna fly under a lot of people's radar because it really does look like he skated it the way the program is supposed to be skated. A fellow Shoma fan on Twitter said it's like listening to a different reading of the same poetry, and I have to agree with her.

My peak DOMO is still CC DOMO, but this one... an interesting addition to the collection. Sorry for the long post(s) everyone!

This is from Daniel Weiss and ONE for the SP. Eurosport Germany didn't show the last two groups of men, just reruns of Nathan and Yuzuru, unfortunately.

Shoma Uno, SP Great Spirit, Worlds Stockholm, German Channel ONE, Commentator: Daniel Weiss

Daniel Weiss: And like in the Ladies' event, the performances in the short program are, from the majority of the athletes, really first-rate, one notices that everyone is burning after that long break, last year the World Championship was cancelled because of the pandemic, this year it's happening.

One of the top skaters on the ice now, from Japan, Shoma Uno. Two-times second at World Championships, 2017, 2018.

Quadruple Flip. We haven't seen that one today either. Brought to the ice in first-class quality.

Attempt Quad-Triple. Ah, only doubled the Toeloop afterwards, but what does 'only' mean....that Quadruple was perfect!

Oh dear, that's not possible!

What this man does with his blades is from another planet. Shoma Uno. If there is no judge who pulls out 9 points, then I don't understand this world anymore, because this was, skating technique wise, only looking at the skates, how he glides, what he does, the step combination, transitions that he shows, that was absolutely world class. Skating skills I see on the screen here with 9,04 points, choreography 9,06 points, interpretation of music 9,05, it is changing now, that is in the 9 point corridor, but honestly, yes he made that dumb mistake on the Axel, yes, and here gets a little wake-up slap from Stéphane Lambiel, but let's look at the technique first....

A little too far at the front with the Flip, but super completion. Combination, planned Quad-Triple. I don't understand why he didn't put the triple....yes, the left shoulder is a little too far behind, okay. That's not a mistake!

Great spins, great music, very wilful music, a new style for him, top execution. Once again to mention the blades, just have a look...what I don't understand this...this work of art on the ice and only because he had this mistake with the Axel, one or another judge is afraid to go clearly over 9 in choreography? I have to drag the judges by the ear and say, have you lost your marbles?

For real! This has to be in the 9s, in every component. Gosh! They just are not able to divide, what went wrong technique wise, he is punished with the fall and the one point deduction, but it isn't possible to skate this better in components, everything has to be in the 9s here. And I mean the high 9s.

Stéphane Lambiel on the right side, two time World Champion for Switzerland. Did a really great job with Shoma Uno. Gave him a new direction, a new look, looks super good! And I'm really annoyed by these program components.

Of course, he loses a lot of points for the Axel, also with the combo..combination, good lord, 92,62 points, currently in third place. From the overall placement this might be okay, perhaps, but like I said, I would see many more points here. He can show us in the long program. The last word has not been spoken, yet.

Original

Any chance of them turning Oboe Concerto into his new SP? I'll miss Great Spirit though, especially the StSq.
Shoma was talking about his new programs for next year. He said they have already begun to work on them so let the speculation begin!

FWIW: Russia announced their WTT team. Looking forward to who will be selected to represent Japan.
