I still find the rules a bit ridiculous, regardless of whether Anna should go or not. I mean, as others have stated this is the World Team Trophy. It’s not really that serious a competition, and even if it was, no skater should be forced by the ISU to go. The rules state that you need medical notes and such, and that the ISU has to approve. They also state that if a skater does withdraw due to illness or injury, they can’t compete until the ISU says ok. Like why? I understand that they want to be able to hold an event, but forcing athletes to compete if they don’t want to, especially for rest, doesn’t seem to me like a good way to hold a fun competition.
The thing is in it's conception it wasn't supposed to be a "fun" competition.

Ok, that actually makes it even more ridiculous because athletes are allowed to withdraw from competitions, so why should the WTT be any different?
Because athletes by definition WANT to do World's/Olympics/etc. You wouldn't withdraw from those if you don't absolutely need to.

I get it, but you are still allowed to. You aren’t forced to compete. So why are you forced to compete at the WTT?

Why is everyone assuming that the skaters don't want to go to WTT?

I'm sure most of them are happy to have another competition after Worlds to look forward to, specially since it's in Japan and with an audience and the more relaxed and fun team event format (and the possibility of earning prize money).

I think the skaters would actually be very happy to be invited. At least the ones who have commented or posted about it on social media seem excited.
I certainly don't want the new ladies world champion go. She's never really had the proper amount of time to recover from covid pneumonia or whatever she had in November.

Now if she's feeling OK I'll think she'll go and I don't think she'll do any quads and I think she will love to get out of the country and go to Japan and receive adulation. I can't blame Anna if she goes. But don't expect 2 quad Anna at wtt. She should save her quads for the Grand Prix season.

I do wonder if Elizaveta mindset will change now that her perseverance has finally paid off with a Worlds medal. Kinda like how Mirai Nagasu after many years of persevering and winning olympic team bronze, withered away very soon afterwards. In the kiss n cry, it felt like Elizaveta had finally accomplished her ultimate goal of getting back on the worlds podium. I dont know if her goal also includes making the olympic team which is another heck of a challenge. Of course you could say, she made the team this year so why couldnt she next year. But next year she wont be as lucky as there was just her and Alena fighting for the 3rd spot this year. There will be Kamila, Anna, Alexandra, Alena, Daria and Maiia. And the thing is all 6 of them has had a higher domestic season best score than Elizaveta. Which means she will need to count on their mistakes to get into the team. She will require 4 of them to have a bad season. I just dont think her motivation will be the same again after the euphoria of finally winning a Worlds medal again and having to fight against all these girls.
I think Elizaveta could let herself relax and just go for it completely for the Olympics. A skater should skate for as long as they have the desire, but still, she has that Worlds 2021 silver medal now. Even the results have confirmed to her that staying in the game this long after her initial success was finally worth it.

Lol. Yesterday the ISU said any skater who didn't perform at the Gala would be penalized.
Yes absolutely right! For people wondering, just a note that it has always been like this. I believe you're deducted a percentage of your prize money for not participating if invited? This is one of the conditions all skaters know and have agreed to. It's a part of the event. So an injured skater that grasped a heroic victory in the FS a day before isn't always participating in the Gala out of the goodness of their sweet hearts as we would love to believe. There's some well-earned money involved too.

They want a certain calibre of competition. Also in many ways it was a test run for the team event for the Olympics.
I guess so.

Also: Does anyone know what would happen if a skater refuses to compete at the WTT? I know for the gala, they deduct some of your prize money, but for WTT, they can't take away money that doesn't exist, so what do they do?

Depends. If they're named and don't finish the competition, then they lose a percentage of the prize money - for the team. If they withdraw before, then there's a chance they lose the country loses the spot.

I think that you also (at least for the Olympics) get deducted if you don't have a different program (not one of your competition programs) to show.

Very brief interview of Anna with CBC (with short further talk about what Canada should do in skating):

Her English is really good.

It wouldn't surprise me if she goes for quads, unless they are disastrous in practice leading up to the competition. She didn't really need the quads in the FS at Worlds and she still went for it, according to the layout that they had submitted she originally planned to go for 2. Plus, this is another competition for her to show her 'worth' to the Fed to build her body of work for the Olympic team next year as a stable competitor.

You're a good salesperson. I'll buy that.

Annas English is unbelievable.

There was a headline out Aliona has her triple axle back and she's staying with TT! It was also stated she got the ultra jump back with EG out of the country.

If this is true it's a game changer.

I also saw a headline about Maria was not going to appeal her unbelievably absurd 10 year ban from figure skating for taking water pills trying to lose weight to fit into a wedding dress. Yes she was negligent with paperwork after retirement but this is too much and she should appeal such nonsense.

can you share the article please?

i don't doubt it at all- seeing the pictures and videos since she's been back with Eteri, she seems so happy and back in her element. i think the motivation really came back and she's in the right environment. don't count her out just yet!

I went back to look for the article a few minutes ago and couldn't find it they've already moved on to other articles. But if I find it again and I'll try to post it but it's hard to do from my phone I could probably do it from a laptop if I can copy and paste the URL.

I figured Aliona would fit right back in at TT she knows all the girls and even if some of them are upset with her for leaving like that. I'm sure they will forgive her and just move on.

We want to see the video of her doing this triple axel. But we will have to wait.

I don't really think the other girls care in the slightest. They have shown with photographic and video evidence that they don't care about the crazy coaching feuds.
