Alena Kostornaia

I am so hoping and wishing for Alena to regain her form from the 2020 season as the top skater in the world! Fate really dealt her a harsh blow as she was in a terrific position to win a world medal in 2020 before Worlds were cancelled. Kostornaia is my favorite skater in the ladies discipline! I really think her focus for the upcoming season needs to be in ensuring she always reaches the highest levels and grades of execution possible on all of her elements. Also, she needs to sell every moment from a performance aspect and add as many transitions into and out of her elements as long as she can perform everything smooth and cleanly. Also, she really needs to sell the fact that she has some of the best skating skills in the business and get every point she can in all those details. Her key to success in the past has been her consistency and she definitely needs to carry that into the Olympic season. Her 2020 SP jump layout of 3Axel, 3Lutz, x3flip+3toe should stay the same as long as she has regained and secured the 3Axel. For her LP, I am curious to see if her team is considering adding a 3Lutz+3toe since she was seen hitting it in practice footage upon returning to Eteri. Perhaps a LP layout of 3Axel+Rippon 2toe, 3Axel, 2Axel, 3loop, x3Lutz+3toe, x3flip+euler+3Salchow, x3flip or 3Axel+Rippon 2toe, 3Axel, 2Axel, 3Lutz+3toe, x3loop, x3flip+Euler+3Salchow, x3flip. A layout of 3Axel+Rippon 2toe, 3Axel, 2Axel (having the Axels together is still a good strategy in the event she doubles one and needs to go for the triple again), 3Lutz+3toe, x3flip (with the option of adding the 3toe if she feels uncomfortable with the Lutz+toe), x3flip+Euler+3Salchow, x3loop could also work. Here’s hoping and dreaming for her to fulfill all of her potential! Go Alena! ❤️ 💕 💗

I'm sure that technically she will be back in no time. Tutberidze will handle her growth spurt and motivational issues better that any other coach on the planet.
What worries me is her artistic decline, which was caused by both of her teams' choices.
I'm worried she will be not given great programs in a season where she'll have to face a crazy bloodbath. If that not-so-Lovely SP is one of the reasons she rebelled last year, I totally understand her.
Unless, well, Gleihkengauz decides to take her seriously at least for the most important season of all.

I realize I might be worried for nothing as far as results are concerned, as only the big jumps will count. As long as she lands the triple axels she will be fine in any area of her future scores.
But as a fan of glorious moments at the Olympics, I would be really frustrated to see such talent go to waste again because she's forced to stick to one particular choreographer in order to stay in Sambo.
And I also want her to be satisfied with her programs and performances. She has said that figure skating is vital to her, she can't imagine her life without it, and I'm sure an important part of her love for the sport lays in the connection she creates with the audience. I suspect that she can't create this connection if she dislikes her programs.

I do think Aliona can really sell a program though (see Twilight, which has horrendous music cuts but she just absolutely shines) -- hoping for good choreography though...

Sure, she is incredible, but can she have a good program for the Olympic season please? Imagine she makes it to the Olympics and her lasting legacy is a (probably technically great) performance to some Billy Eyelash song. That would annoy me to death.

I think one important thing to remember is that she WANTED to skate to Twilight and Billie Eilish! And while I would love for her to skate to a masterpiece (I want the same for the others), I also used to LOVE Twilight and I get the obsession with Billie haha. And connecting to your music IS important - it makes it easier to perform and interpret and is what helps to allow her to come through. (Loving your music and relating to it is important - she's going to hear it for 9-10 months.)

EDIT: Remember they made her programs first before she left. Aliona WAS the one that they were paying attention to.

Yeah, I guess it must make also bad impression on judges when she skates to something pretty much unlistenable, so I'm hoping for more conservative choices..

That's a ridiculous argument. Because it DOESN'T. She got the highest PCS when she was skating to Twilight both domestically and internationally. Her PCS didn't drop domestically while skating to Billie even when she was struggling.

Because she skated to Muse. It's not their fault that their music was used in Twilight, and even the vampire attributes can't ruin it completely.

It wasn't a Muse program. It was a vampire program. Look at the choreography. She also didn't just skate to Muse, she skated to 3 different songs all from the Twilight soundrack(s). Also keep in mind they WANTED their music to be used in used in Twilight. Also the Twilight soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy. Twilight was HUGE back then. (I remember watching them all in theatres and the craziness.)

That's my memory decided to support my point and refused to recollect the other 2 songs from that program.

I was hoping Aliona would be able to keep the programs from the Russia Cup Final however I think that is a lost cause. So instead, I hope she still gets to skate to music in the free program by Luca D’Albeto. It’s haunting, and she seems to connect to it.

I'm fine with anything Aliona wants to skate to. Sure, I would love another Stella/Adios Nonino type program again, but I actually loved her Twilight and Billie Eilish. I'm just worried about the music cuts. I really enjoyed Twilight, but I admit that the third track could have been blended in better. Same for the Billie Eilish program, it sometimes seems like all they do when they put different tracks together in a program is cut and paste and call it a day 😔. Aliona can make anything work, but I'd really prefer the music to have nice transitions between different pieces instead of jarring ones. A major reason why I thought Mariah Bell's fs this season could have been so much better.

Videos of Aliona's performances in super-high quality!! :yahoo:

I have to say, I didn't care for the last third of "Lovely" when I saw the grainy versions on Instagram, and I still don't like the music there, but wow! The fire and intensity in Aliona's eyes in the step sequence! :drama: SO GOOD!!

YESSSSS! 2nd one is amazing. I love seeing her continue to branch out. So much more expressive and interesting, really unlocks her full strength, beauty, and personality as a skater.

I pray one day she'll have an olympic gala like this one (of course when she's at her peak) and just dunk on everyone in style.
