Really great interview with Maya. Lots of interesting details. Maya casually and with a laugh crumbles one fan stereotype after another - and that "only Dudakov working with technique", and that "in the Crystal-rink only ice is eaten". The language of the interview is the language of live communication, and the Google translator can often be weird))

Part of it is funding and the power of the Federation. Skaters don't want to give that up and for some it isn't an option financially.I said Elite.
I don't know why Ukraine is not poaching some of the overflow from the Russian skaters.
Due to the way sports are set up in Russia the top 9 skaters essentially don't have to worry about training, coaching, programs, etc at all. That becomes much more uncertain and expensive for even lower ranked skaters if they leave Russia.
The other is the strength of the Russian Fed. Eteri herself commented on how Morisi's scores dropped when he started competing for Georgia despite still having a relatively powerful coach (at the time and only stronger now.)
And then finally, it's asking a lot to ask skaters to leave their family, homes, etc. And for some Russian is their identity.

What a great interview! I like how Maiia spoke, twice, of feeling and being more powerful when Eteri appears. Some have called it fear, but I've always privately disagreed. Also, I love the detail that Danny G. starts the first 5 minutes of training with a joke. Lovely!

I also really liked how she talked about jokes and laughing during practices. She basically said that her previous teams didn’t allow anyone to laugh, so she got used to never laugh at training. haha, I can’t imagine her trying to keep a straight face But then seeing how everyone is laughing, she started feeling like it’s okay to laugh.Also said that this simple thing really helps her, that laughing and joking in between tense moments of training helps to not be too much in her head, like a useful distraction. Very interesting.
I remember Aliona on her first JGPF or JrWorlds said that during training they just joke and laugh all the time, and that they don’t really train or something like that. I bet Aliona is contributing a lot to that kind of atmosphere!

Oh dear Maiia, this part was so sad. I’m glad that she had that big redemption moment, when she finally landed her quads.

Well, yes, it was sad at the beginning but also, I mean, who wouldn't feel embarrassed or ashamed, plus the feeling of letting the team down.
But for me, the great thing was how she took measures: to work for herself, to not pay attention to anyone, and then the steps she took to accomplish that. Very wonderful.

I'm also glad it happened this year.
There is no way she's alone in getting negative comments even ones said publicly by prominent members of the skating community.
But I hope she now believes in herself. Better for it to happen in a relatively meaningless domestic "fun" competition as a junior than next year..
She arguably has the hardest path to the Olympic team out of any of Eteri's top 6 skaters..she'll need every ounce of that confidence (and probably a little luck too)...Unfortunately, she'll need one of the top 4 (at least) to seriously falter..
Today is rain with snow. But it's not normal in may.
it reminded me of a joke:

ultra complicated/complex; but origin is from gymnastics, iirc - elements have a, b, c, etc levels of difficulty; anything higher than с was "ultra"; later on, this grading moved to fs

Those are the sad things behind the interview... The more everyone has to admire Maiia that she did not give up and has proven to everyone and above all to herself what she's capable of. She couldn't wish a better ending of the season for her.
On a more cheerful note. As I've read just the bold part, I realized, that it is not completely impossible to have all-Eteri GP final in the upcoming season

Very true especially your last paragraph. We have to remember how young these skaters are and it's not always easy to switch countries and then some will see you as a traitor which of course is not true. Since Anastasia G has not competed internationally for Russia since 2018 she could make the switch right away without having to sit out a season. Many have wondered why she has not switched yet since the process would go smoothly for her because she has all the qualifications to switch. But I believe she has younger siblings and probably does not want to leave them. Leaving home is hard. But if she went to a country close to Saint Petersburg she could still live in train in Saint Petersburg and represent that other country the way Tursynbaeva and MK do. Many other talented Russian skaters that will never get on the national team or never skate in International competitions are not exactly leaving in droves. I think the Russian federation is making it harder to transfer too.
Good point about how the top 9 Russian skaters don't really have anything to worry about financily. We hear stories in the last couple years about how Nastya T needed money and her parents spent like $300,000 on her coaching and how can that be if the federation paid for it? It's confusing but obviously it's not that easy to transfer. Russia has several skilled ladies whose careers are hanging on by a thread.

I see Maya a real wild card for the Olympic season. The sky is the limit for her especially if she gets good programs.
