One of my favourite parts of these interviews is knowing the timeline of when they learned their jumps! We already know this, but I'm very confident that Eteri doesn't force quads and difficult elements. Her 4S was learned just before the new year. And Kamila's 4S in November. But Aliona in her 2020 interview says new jumps are never learned during the season. So I think it's left up to the skater.

Maiia's 4S was so fresh. She had to regain it after the Corona gap and it makes sense that she wasn't landing it this season until the end. If we're discussing the whole interview, Maiia was stuck at doubles for so long after the resumption and Eteri suggested she switches to ice dance....often!! Clearly the situation was very severe but Maiia's work paid off.

And she might keep the SP!

Maybe Plushenko realized that she has irreparably poor technique and she'd probably lose her jumps anyway once she fills out. So he didn't take her in, like Eteri denied her. I did think that Plushy could help her. Poor Liza#3....

season drama is not over yet? - Eteri is in 1TV studio ;)

On a more cheerful note. As I've read just the bold part, I realized, that it is not completely impossible to have all-Eteri GP final in the upcoming season (y)(y)
Technically no...but virtually impossible. Not only will they all be competing against each other and the Fed can't support ALL of them. But they will also be competing against Rika/Kaori/Wakaba (in Japan as well as abroad) as well as Young You, and the Americans. Not all of them have the technical content and PCS to compete. In addition, they'll also be competing against Liza T. Not all of them will even have Fed support against Liza T.

They would have to sweep the medals at every single grand prix..which would be...impossible. Other feds would never allow it.

Then we should send all 6 of those EG girls to Europeans the Olympics and worlds!
The thing with a statement like that is yes, right now Russia is strong. But it's 1. not true that they will be forever and 2. not true that all 6 of them could beat the World.

If something like that had happened when other countries had been as strong in other disciplines and even ladies, Russia wouldn't have the ladies it does.

And finally, it's better for the sport as a whole that Russia doesn't send 6 to every competition.

you forgot, "Maya can!" and others can too :)
*sigh* it's not a matter of her tech content. It's not a matter of her potential.

A lot of it will come down to Fed support. And considering the Fed also has 3 other disciplines to consider and they want medals everywhere - quite frankly the Fed won't even focus on the GP beyond stabilizing the placements of the top skaters in all disciplines in the lead up to World's. They'll be looking toward the Olympics. People keep forgetting ladies isn't an island. Ice dance for example will take considerable Fed support to ensure S/K medal, especially with the return of P/C.

Yes, tech content helps. But it's not even what the Fed is looking for. They're looking for will judges support you when your content fails. Because the judges need to.

People need to understand, it's not a matter of being able to match a stronger ranked skater technically. The judges will always side with the skater with the reputation. They need to be able to outskate them and so much and so consistently that they swing support away from others and towards them. For someone to rise someone has to fall. The Fed won't and can't support all of them to the same extent.

It's not that they can't it's that it requires that others can't unfortunately. :(

Figure skating is political. :( Them all being coached by one coach in one country makes it so they can't all succeed.(Even for as little things as judges from all countries/federations know where they stand domestically and judge them as such.)

First, it was more a joke to cheer up the sad mood after the interview with Maiia. But if taken seriously, I'm not saying it will happen at all. On the other hand I don't that as impossible (though not very probable) as you probably do.

We have seen Anna/Sasha/Aliona sweeping GP podiums through the whole 2021/20 GP series. Not that impossible they would do that again. Kamila, can join them easily. If Daria keeps her consistency from the 2020/21 season, I can see her above anyone but clean Rika and Kaori (Wakaba, You and Americans apart from Alysa in her form from a season ago are no match against clean Daria and I'm keeping that position as Stalingrad against the 6th army). And Maiia at the level of the RCF can be also hardly beatable and the judges would need to be very generous in components for Japan and US ladies to keep up the points.

I again repeat I don't say that will happen. Aliona may stay out of her previous form, Daria can lose her consistency, Maiia can fail at landing quads etc. etc. But the same applies to their opponents, who also have their issues, same of bigger than what we can expect from the Russians. And we've already seen four Russians at GPF. The situation where all the support from the other federations will simply not be enough against the red army march is not so unimaginable to me.

It's not that they have to sweep GP podiums - that's doable. It's that they have to sweep ALL of them and lose only to each other.

Remember, Maiia with two quads domestically is lower than Anna's skate with a step out of one quad internationally.

It's NOT that the other federations won't stop a sweep at any events. They'll expect to lose to Anna, Sasha, and probably Kamila. And wouldn't be surprised with a loss to Liza T or Aliona. In fact, they'll expect sweeps at some of them. It's that they need to sweep EVERY event. And merely stoping the "red army march" won't be enough - there's also Liza T with the same Fed support.

I wouldn’t underestimate the international competitors though. Russia seemed to have less restrictions than the rest of the countries and had more competitions. It really was an unusual season. Who knows how much all the girls will improve once given more ice training and mess Covid restrictions.

OK then 5 not 6! ;)

Events won't suffer if you have more Russians in there or athletes from other countries and the same goes for Japan and America and whatever country is dominating.

I'm sorry but when you're sending athletes to world championships and the olympics it's supposed to be a competition for the strongest and best. But figure skating limits that and they need a new organization and a new figurehead for the sport to move forward in the future. They need people in their twenties and thirties running the sport not in their sixties and seventies. Figure skating should be much more popular that it is.

I don't even want to stop having all these dozens of countries participating in figure skating competitions I don't want to get rid of that I want to reward the skaters and countries that are dominating better than figure skating does. This is not rocket science it should be easy to improve figure skating and making it more popular around the world.

Let's see a European championships with 5 Russians in the ladies discipline and 5 in the pair's discipline wont exactly ruin the event let me put it that way. :) The ratings would be even higher which would please sponsors. I would bet every penny on it! ;)

In fact I think Europeans would be wise to create their own rules separate from the ISU to change the sport for the better. Not having a sasha or aliona or Anna or KV at the Olympics or worlds next year is not good for the sport.

As for the Russians dominating in ladies I would not expect that to end anytime soon since thousands of parents bring their children to EG every year at 5 years old!

no it's not.
The sport is better when the best can compete.
I dont' care about their passport: that's politic not sport.

Skating is a minor sport because the real international competitions can be counted on a hand.
1) WC
2) GP Final
3) EU (partial)
4) 4C (partial)

I won't count GP stages because each top skater take part in 2 out of 6 and that leads to the top guns avoiding each other with few exceptions.

No, because there are only so many spots per discipline.

So yes, you would be getting rid of countries that are participating. And it's the best from each country. And no, the popularity of figure skating would decline with dominance from one country. Or when was the last time you saw other countries really challenging Russia in rhythmic gymnastics? And how popular is that sport globally? When was the last time you saw other countries (other than US and Russia and Sweden) really challenge Canada in ice hockey?? And how popular is that sport globally? And there are countless other examples where it's hardest to get out of your own country than it is.

And you have to realize the true way to grow an audience isn't domination by one country. Most people - passionate figure skating fans excluded - don't know who Kamila Valieva even is. Most people cheer for their own country and when that country has no chance of success they don't pay attention. In fact, most countries television broadcasts ONLY give airtime to their own countries competitors and sometimes ONLY in sports that they have reasonable chances in.

Do you really think Canada couldn't send three ice hockey teams and sweep? Do they? No. They have to leave some of the best in the World behind every year.

And they ARE sending their best! But EVERY country is.

As for real international competitions being counted on a hand - that applies for MOST sports.

Gymnastics for example, has a 2 per country rule - so even if the top 4 or 5 gymnasts in the World are all from one country only the top two qualify. And that's for ALL events, including the All Around.

And while YOU might not care about their passport that's not actually how sports grow. That's not how worldwide TV networks showcase sports. They typically ONLY focus on sports/skaters from their own countries. And it's the children watching at home that is how sports grow.

What exactly can they do about it? Maybe train their teams better? Sounds like sour grapes to me.
