2020-21 U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Torgashev is in Envelope C.
[He did not meet the any of the criteria based on results from the 2020-21 season.
"Additional Considerations" (apparently the combination of Envelope B for the 2020-21 season + inability to compete at Nats because of injury) must have applied.]

First-time recipient Yaro Paniot is in Envelope B for placing 4th at Nats.

Team USA funding envelopes for 2021-2022 have been posted. I'm relieved to still see Torgashev listed. I don't like the radio silence.

Also, I can see Yaro has been added.

You and me both about radio silence.

Maybe I should try to follow some of the other skaters in Raf's group and see if I can see him in the background, much like spotting Jason in the background of other skaters vids at TCC.

If anyone who follows Raf's skaters more closely sees any glimpse of Andrew on the ice, please let me know:pray:

Wow 303+ Vincent is making others sweating. Jason: Is my team event hope dashed? Yuzuru: Is my silver in danger? Yuma, Shoma, Misha and other podium contenders: What’s my chance of getting an Olympic medal?

6 clean quads and 3 clean 3As will surely put him over 300, domestic or international. Hoping otherwise is simply kidding yourself. Remember Vincent got a 198+ FS With 3 quads at 2019 WTT.

Of course six clean quads will get those scores.

I think the question is, will the international judges call six clean quads? I have no idea, I'm not good at counting rotations, edges, and URs. And will he land six clean quads in an international comp when the pressure is on?

But I'm glad Vincent obviously feels inspired and confident after the disaster at Worlds. And I think the US is propping him up for Nebelhorn, which is fine by me. I want that third spot confirmed, and I think Vincent should be the one to do it, if he's capable(y)

Wait, where's Ilia Malinin?
An excellent question.

His Instagram is sporadic. The last post was of his 4Lp, which is the fourth type of quad he's demonstrated, at least in practice.

It's hard to tell for sure, but he looks to me to be taller and more mature than Skate America - which makes sense for a young man of his age. Is that translating into better spins and components, or has it thrown off his balance leading to a lull? Unknown. I don't know what his competition plans are for this year.

And I love that the Three Musketeers of Vincent, Tomoki, and Camden are assigned to NHK together.
Nice to travel with some of your best friends to the country with some of the best fans. 🧳 ✈️ 🍱 🍣⛩️
Are they calling themselves that haha? Nice for them going to Japan as a fighting team. Hopefully lots of reports if they have the time :)

It looks like Vincent skated fabulously, but this is really more like a practice/warmup than a high stakes competition. What are the odds the Japanese men even know the Broadmoor Open is happening this week? It's a US club competition in early summer at Vincent's home rink, not exactly a pressure-packed event. I think everyone in the men's field should worry about themselves and not panic over anything. Jason Brown has known for a long time that without any quads, he would need mistakes from Vincent to place ahead of him, and the only thing he can do is focus on himself.

I was surprised to see Vincent landed two 4S that were called fully rotated, and one was even in the bonus and in combination. I'd love to see video of it... I don't know if the panel is more lax with the calls in competitions like this. But he clearly seems motivated after his Worlds debacle and that's nice to see.

Only found this practice 4S ahead of Aerial Challenge. If you download and play it frame to frame to check on the landing you'll see it's indeed cheated by 1/2 a turn.

Mitchell Friess! I love him. Gotta find him a turtle stuffie.

I've been looking for Vincent's programs from this event. Are they posted anywhere?

The men's lineup for this week's "Junior Cup" at Skate Milwaukee is 🔥

I have no idea if all these skaters will show, but even if half of them do, wowza. If I were anywhere near Milwaukee, I'd be there.

Ilia Malinin, Jacob Sanchez (my boy:hap10:) Joe Klein (my second boy), Sam Mindra, Will Annis, and many more I just don't have time to type out.

I will be interested to see exactly what the Junior Cup results are used for. :)

ETA: and there is a junior men's comp that is separate from the "Junior Cup", and @moonvine Andrew Austin is skating in the senior men (as well as Maxim Naumov).

Yes I am so excited!

I'm really surprised that Malinin didn't move up to Seniors this year. After this Olympics season there are going to be a lot of retirements and Ilia might have the most potential of the younger guys coming up to move up fast.

For the strong 💪 Junior Cup field, I will list the fourteen names like so:

Two JGPs in 2019:
Matthew Nielsen; Ilia Malinin (2020 Skate America fifth place)

One JGP in 2019:
Joe Klein (2021 Nats jr men silver 🥈); Liam Kapeikis (2020 Nats jr men bronze 🥉); Will Annis; Daniel Martynov (ISP Points Challenge jr men first place)

More 2021 Nats junior men:
Sam Mindra, bronze 🥉; Jacob Sanchez, pewter;
Lucas Broussard (2021 U.S. Championship Series jr men first place); Michael Xie; Maxim Zharkov, 2021 Nats jr men SP second place
(2021 Nats junior men champion Eric Prober is not listed on start order, although age-eligible for JGP.)

2021 U.S. Championship Series novice men:
Beck Strommer, first place; Jonathan Hildebrandt, second place

2021 Broadmoor Open:
Kai Kovar, jr men first place with total score of 199.44

U.S. has only seven JGP slots (one per event). 😐
(And if one man or more is deemed worthy of two slots, even fewer men will be getting any JGP assignment. 😑)

Good luck to all! 👏
