Nathan Chen

So, you know who could probably choreograph a great Mozart program? Marina Zoueva. Alas...

I can sort of see what you're saying, but I just don't love the way Marina cuts music in several of her most well known programs, so I'm not especially sad about this.

I'm hazy on the details but Nathan somehow participating in the Airweave scholarship program where he will be working with a prof from Stanford to study the relationship between sleep and sports performance.

Does this mean TV cameras will no longer catch him having a spectacular yawn while waiting to go out for his warm ups?

Thank you for always keeping us up on Nathan news.

I also remember at some point he said Amadeus was his favorite movie.
If he did do an Amadeus inspired program I'd feel cheated if he didn't go all out on the costume😆.

Though I wouldn't put it past Shae to patch Mozart with a Chinese song like this:

After all, she did give Nathan a French song for Montreal and Mariah Abba for Stockholm, though oddly those programs never made it there.

Choreographers probably pitch music suggestions to Nathan, but I get the feeling that Nathan himself has a strong personal say in what ultimately end up being used for his programs, at least post-2018.

Regarding this S.H.E song - he seems very into indie music and the song is as far as it could get from his music taste lol. I know it borrows the popular Symphony No. 40 theme but the rest of the song itself has very little do with actual Mozart. In general, I'd cry if he decides to use one of those modern/pop/techno renditions of classical music for his programs.... Most of them have just been down right horrible IMO. Though I'd love a modern interpretation of an original classical piece.

While I agree that skating skills and flow out of jumps is more a TeamRaf thing, but if my memory is not fading me, I remember back in early 2018, Ic3rabbit mentioned that she had seen Nathan received edge training from Shae Lynn. This article from 2017 seemed to confirm what she had said.

I also remembered both Evan and Vincent, the latter I am not that sure, said in interviews that Lori would asked them to hold the landing positions little bit longer. So I do think choreographers have influences on how jumps are done to enhance the programs.

My impression is Shae-Lynn has much more influence on Nathan than we probably know. There is on going communications between them about possible music choices, recommendations, even costume choices which we never expect. To me, Nathan is in good hands with Raf and Shae-Lynn, so I wouldn’t worry too much if we are going to have two amazing programs
Thank you Bonita.

I'll tell you all for a fact that choreographers do all those things and more. ;)

On other note: Zoueva is the LAST person I would want Nathan getting choreo from especially in Olympic season.

I would though, love to see what Scott Moir could do for him. Just saying...

And Lori Nichol: https://youtu.be/AlDtAMQjwz8

This program makes me wonder whether Nathan’s Mozart program (if he has one) would use one or multiple pieces of music. While I usually like the coherence of using a single piece, there might not be enough contrast in the material to construct the build-up and climax of a potentially Olympic gold-winning program. By using multiple pieces they can start off with something suspenseful or gloomy (such as the opening in this program with the Requiem), leading to a mini climax mid-program, followed a quietly brooding step sequence (featuring one of my beloved piano Andantes), finally resolving into a gloriously triumphant ending (such as the final movement of a symphonic work or an instrumental opera finale). It’d be formulaically similar to what he’s done before but stylistically refreshing. However, Mozart’s music is not as compositionally homogeneous as Glass’s works so it might be hard to splice different pieces together seamlessly. I’d surely take a well-cut if lukewarm program with one piece of music over a dramatic program with multiple obtrusive cuts.

Also, I’d be mortified if he uses some pop song “cover” of Mozart  Please have some love for my old soul lol

ETA: I know Karl Hugo who works together with Shae-Lynn’s collaborator for music editing, Hugo Chouinard, sometimes composes for skating programs. Maybe he can make one or two compositions that help to connect different pieces of music together.

LutzDance, if you have ideas about Mozart pieces that would go well together, I'd love to hear them. Is it too much to hope for the program to end with the final movement of the Jupiter symphony? 😭

... probably, since we don't even know for sure if it *is* Mozart yet.

I have ideas about pieces but they don’t go together :( It’s more like ticking off boxes:

Gloomy opening: Lacrimosa from Requiem, or 1st movement of Piano Concerto No.20 which is one of the darker concertos

Slow movement for step sequence: second movement of Piano Concerto No.20 or No.21, or andante from Piano Sonata No.8 or No.11

Victorious finish: Cosi Fan Tutte Act I finale (no vocals), or as you said Jupiter Symphony final movement

Hope my awkward suggestions can inspire some better ideas ;)

From some behind-the-scenes stories I’ve heard about TSL, it’s likely to be correct that Nathan has been practicing a program containing at least one piece by Mozart. I think it’s unclear whether if it’s going to be exclusively Mozart or include other composers as well, or if he’s going to stick to that program/its current music layout since he probably just started working on it.

Does that mean…MFD could also be a good choreographer for Mozart? 😅
I mean, Gabi & Guillaume’s Mozart program is not bad :p But I won’t trust her with Nathan lol

Thank you for the music ideas! :) Would appreciate more ideas from you and anyone interested. I seem to recall Mozart would not be your first choice for him, so I'm extra grateful you came up with appealing options.

It would seem composing a linking piece is something music editors do at times. Another music editor (not one of the ones you listed above--I think he goes by the name skatingmusicguy or something like that?) who offers services to skaters mentioned he could do this if the skater wants to use two disparate pieces of music. Shae's music cutting joined the pieces of Desperado and Philip Glass smoothly, IMHO, so I would have confidence in her to avoid a truly jarring cut.

But I won't get ahead of myself and hope for Jupiter symphony yet, thank you for your insight into the TSL rumors. It's just that Mozart was heard at one point. That doesn't rule out 'modern' at all--I mean, the beginning of Nathan's Desperado program didn't lead me to expect the vocals that followed. :eek2:

Shae, please do not inflict a S.H.E-style wound upon our delicate psyche.

Airweave USA announced their cooperation with Nathan on their blog.

hello everyone! I am new here although I have been lurking for a while. I'm obviously a big Nathan fan - I love the beauty and grace of his movement, his body control, the way he performs and feels the music. I have watched figure skating for leisure in the past but Nathan only recently made me learn more about skating itself, so I am very much not knowledgeable.

I was just popping in to share with you this story from twitter:

It shows to me how much Nathan and his skating touches people, to the point that his beautiful interpretation can be used as class material.

Welcome! Thanks for sharing the story. Funny that her mom was also not on board with Vera's costume :)

Remember the organization for homeless kids, standupforkid_orangecounty which Nathan posted to help with their fundraising in April?

Looked like besides being busy with Panasonic filming over the weekend, Nathan helped some of the kids got on ice, and provided in person training with other TeamRaf skaters for them Last weekend.

standupforkids_orangecounty

Thanks to Nathan and his friends, StandUp for Kids Orange County youth experiencing homelessness were able to get on the Ice Skating rink this past weekend! ⠀
This event provided the opportunity to learn from a three-time World Champion in figure skating. Moments like these give our youth a sense of love from their community, hope in they can do anything they set their mind to, and fun in enjoying life to the fullest.

ETA: tweet with more pictures from the Rinks

IG post, there is a different picture from the tweet
