The thing is Alysa holding her own could mean a 4th to 6th place finish at Skate Canada. She could score higher than she did at Lombardia and still place in the middle given the field. I hope USFS will be looking not just at placements, but at scores as well when considering Olympic selections.
That would be fine for the US Committee as long as she beats Karen. Look, hopefully Alysa will skate well and win Nationals. That would make discussion moot.

Even if Alysa is on the Nationals podium in 3rd, what 4th place finisher would they bump her in favor of? Perhaps Bradie, who I believe is the only one who has topped Alysa's best combined score. But Alysa will very likely have three international wins after this weekend, and very likely post three scores over 200, so I can't see the USFSA denying her the spot (even to Bradie) if she makes the podium.

I think Alysa will definitely be selected for the team if she top 3 at Nationals regardless of how she does in the GP. The same is true for Karen, Mariah and Bradie.

The ones who they might pass over ( USFS did it last year) are Amber and Lindsay.

Amber needs to prove herself internationally this year. She has the best jumps ( when she doesn't pop them) and ( possibly excepting Karen) best skating skills. However, she is also inconsistent and she doesn't always choose the best programs to highlight her strengths. She has Wakaba like power and SLB could make some awesome programs for her. Mishe Ge is a mediocre choreographer imho.

Lindsay does everything well except for sell her programs. She might benefit from acting lessons.

As the reigning Champion, and looking at her Nationals record, Bradie is the only skater I could see getting a committee spot if she were to place 4th. The US Ladies haven't had a medal at the GPF since Ashley's Bronze during the 2014/15 season. Ashley is also the only Lady to medal at Worlds in the last 6 years. I have Alysa winning and the rest of the skaters can fight it out.

She has some international wins already and is likely to win at Nebelhorn, too. Unfortunately, her GP assignments are in some of the toughest fields, so she may not even medal no matter how well she skates. I predict that if Alysa wins Nationals, she will be on the Olympic team no matter how she places on the GP.
I believe the rule is the winner of Nationals is automatically on the team. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong😀

This is the link to the very detailed criteria to being picked for the Olympics. To summarize it, athletes are separated into priority groups depending on performance and competition scores. The final choices are on the fed's discretion so while it's basically impossible for the nationals winner not to go, USA can still theoretically override it. The other way around is also true. Nathan Chen could theoretically bomb nationals very hard and he'll still get sent(tbf, worlds is also listed as a consideration).

If any of Mariah, Karen, or Alysa were the reigning champion right now and had Bradie's Nationals record, I would agree. However, I feel like USFS never really embraced Bradie as their top lady; they've treated her more as a placeholder leader while they tried to promote others as the new star (e.g. Alysa (and I say this as a longtime fan of Alysa's), Mariah, dare I say Isabeau). I think if she's 4th and bronze is Amber/Lindsay/Audrey (or someone with an even lower profile right now), she will get the committee spot over the bronze medalist. But I can imagine a situation where the podium is Alysa, Karen, and Mariah and Bradie is left off the team.

Of the "top 4" American women (Liu, Tennell, Chen, Glenn) if there is one skater who should be left off it should be Karen Chen. Liu and Tennell have swapped Nationals titles for four years and have represented the US the best over this quad. Chen started her career off brilliantly, and I thought/hoped she'd be competitive with the Russians, but she's been a disappointing UR/DG mess. She went to the Olympics already and half-heartedly bombed, so she's had her Oly experience, which included lots of lame excuses for her dismal showing. Karen just never improved her level. I'd rather someone who hasn't been to an Olympics get the spot. Even Mariah Bell. It's not like anyone besides Liu is a medal threat on any level.

Alysa will be our top finisher at the Olympics.
And I know this can't be a consideration: But since the others are all bunched together, and the actual difference is negligible, I would rather see two new girls get the opportunity to go to the Olympics. Amber, Mariah or Lindsay. (longshot Gabby)

if Alysa is the highest scoring US woman at that GP event, or really at any of the GPs regardless of whether or not she makes the final, placement won't matter. it's not hard to see SC is a STACKED field and as long as she puts out solid performances she will be fine. her competition for making the olympic team are only the US women, not the top competitors from other countries.

she seems in a really good headspace. her head's not in the clouds but she knows her potential and trajectory. i'm not worried about the 4Lz, she doesn't really need it this season, and i'd much much rather her keep focusing on all the other aspects of her skating that are improving. i don't think a quad is going to be her ticket to a top 6 or 7 finish at the olympics.

has Alysa shared what her plans are after this season? will she keep competing? i would love to see her stay another quad, imagine the growth we'd see in another 4 years after all the improvements she made in only a matter of months. she has a lot left to give the sport.

I don't necessarily disagree, but unless Bradie/Amber/Mariah consistently out-skate Karen this season, it'll be hard to ignore the fact that we wouldn't have 3 spots to quibble over in the first place without Karen's performance at Worlds.

Right? I would LOVE to see Alyssa skate another 4 years, she has so much potential. She mentioned applying to colleges this fall so that seems to be her plan for after the Olympics. But maybe she could do both?

Does anyone know if Clare Seo is scheduled to skate again? Her performances are one of my favorites to watch. I have been unable to find any information online.

It looks like Lindsay is skating in Slovakia this week. SP is coming soon and I hope she has a great showing. I always wonder if it's scary for a young skater to be so far from home and the only skater from her country in the ladies event.
