Happy for Marin Honda.
When we may see her skating this season before Nationals?
Sectional is the last (major) domestic competition before Nationals. As Marin is not one of the 'strengthened' athlete under JSF, I don't think she'll get assignment to any other international competition in between. So most likely the next competition is the Nationals for her.

Mai Mihara was the best japanese lady tonight for me. Congrats to her on her skate.
She's really been the best Japanese lady of the year so far. Her fourth place GP finish matches Kaori, and she's beaten her head to head at the Asian open.

I had given up hope of her making the Olympic team, but she's certainly earned a place in the discussion if she medals at Nationals.

Anyone that medals at Nationals will make the team. No one has had close to enough success lately for an exemption.

Over the last two weeks, the scores were so so obviously manipulated against Kaori Sakamoto and Mai Mihara to keep them off the podium for chosen favorites that the judges have lost all credibility for me but this has been going on for so long that reparations for years of lowballing are the only thing that makes any sense in making amends for past judging transgressions. As it is, viewers in my opinion have been left to decide for themselves what they like best including the elements they prefer to see, since the judges themselves do not follow their own stated criteria. Skaters from other federations have likewise been purposely lowballed which makes the disregard of the compromised judges evaluations even more resounding. 4CC's and nationals for me are the only competitions at the moment that have any possibility for legitimacy in relative placement or scoring.

You don't think you are going to see lowballing and overscoring at nationals based on if you are a JSF favorite or not? Really? You must not have seen them before.

This. Unlike other countries, Japan doesn't use body of work to determine who will be on the team. One exception being for an injured skater who has an extremely strong body of work like a gold medal at the Olympics or Worlds in the previous year. JSF will go with the top 3 women at Nationals.

About Mai and Kaori, I don't really think they were underscored. I think Daria was overscored in the LP at SA, but Kaori dug her own grave by popping her flip in the SP and messing up her final spin in the LP without those errors she would have been ahead of both Young and Daria.

Mai was probably underscored ( compared to others) in her SP at SC but I thought she had a few ignored URs in the LP so the final score was correct. I don't know why Mai got the benefit of the doubt in the LP when most other skaters didn't but it compensated for her low marks in the SP.

Wakaba's PCS should have been higher in both programs imho. However, the technical calls made against her were correct and she hurt herself by popping her 3Lz and as a result having 2 fewer triples in her FS.

Some people here like to hate on Rika but she scored over 230 points at both of her GPs in the 2019-2020 season the last time she was on the GP. Has any other Japanese woman ever done this? She just doesn't have technical issues for the judges to call except for an occasional UR. Hope she gets healthy soon.

Any word on if Rika will be at NHK?

not sure if I should be more worried if she doesn’t withdraw or if she does.
Yes, I actually hope she withdraws. She isn't going to make the GP final. So, I think it makes more sense to just keep practicing, heal, and come out at Japanese Nationals ready to compete.

This week Mai could make her claim to the oly team and ditto for Satoko. The Itaian GP is relative the weakest event. Russia has their "weak" world champion and their so called weakest quadster. Loena could be the threat. I wonder if Mai or Satoko will seize the day?

Again I have to say, no matter what they do there it doesn't matter, other than maybe get more respect from the judges. Their is no claim to Oly spots in Japan, unless you win GP final. Otherwise it is top 3 finishers at Nats only. The season is just to work on your routine and get on the judges good side.

Assuming one of the top 3 finishers isn't an ineligible junior.
True. I was talking about girls that were selected to the senior GP season. They don't have to go by the results, but they almost always due, unless injury to a top skater or, obviously if a skater isn't eligible.

This. Unlike other countries, Japan doesn't use body of work to determine who will be on the team.
The only "automatic" qualifier for the coming Olympics is the winner of Nationals.

The second selection must fit at least one of these criteria:
  • Second and third placements at the All Japan Championships
  • Top two participants at the 2021 Grand Prix Final
  • Top three ISU season best scores at the end of the All Japan Championships
The third selection must fit at least one of these criteria:
  • A skater who falls under the criteria of the second group but is not selected in that group
  • Top three in the ISU World Standings at the end of the All Japan Championships
  • Top three ISU Season World Rankings at the end of the All Japan Championships
  • Top two season best technical scores in international competitions, the All Japan Championships and domestic competitions as designated by the strengthening department
So for two of the three selections, body of work does exist. Furthermore, there's no specific weighting that is applied; they are free to select someone that satisfies only one condition over someone that satisfies multiple conditions for whatever reason they wish to do so.

It's unlikely that anybody, let alone three people, will surpass Rika Kihira in the ISU World Standings, so even if she shows up at Nationals to just stand on the ice and score a zero for her short program, she can still be considered for the third spot (and they'd be stupid to not consider her in that case).

You know figure skating is broken when Miyahara isn't dominating major international competitions. She is so so expressive, simply in a league of her own.
Then she should move over to ice dancing. She has the perfect body for it, and her jumps would no longer be an issue.
