Oh, I hadn't heard that. Is Matthew also a junior British ice dancer? Did Kat go to England to tryout with Matthew, and then end up discovering Billy?

Do you know whether Kat and Billy are coming back to the U.S. to train with her former coaching team in Maryland, or at some other venue?

Matthew Gates, though from Stevenage in Hertfordshire, competed with Eve Chalom for America in the early 2000s, part of the Detroit school of Ice Dance. He is now Coaching, and Kat was training with him before coming to the UK. Not sure who they will be training with in America yet, hopefully an update soon, as they should be there for quite a few months.

In reply to BlissfulSynergy, it seems fair to borrow your phrasing from the Partner Changes thread and ask, "You've never seen or heard of Mathew Gates before?" ;)

I am by no means an expert on Gates by any stretch, but I had known of him in the context of being Max Gart's coach (during Gart's partnership with DelCamp -- and IIRC, earlier in Gart's career as well). (ETA: And come to think of it, I believe Gates coached the Lavrova/Gart partnership in 2019 too?)
I also had known that Gates originally was from the U.K., and I was happy to learn more about him from @La Rhumba's post. :)

... Do you know whether Kat and Billy are coming back to the U.S. to train with her former coaching team in Maryland, or at some other venue?

Probably off-topic FYI: As of the 2020-21 season, DelCamp/Somerville's training base had been Leesburg, Virginia. Your question seems to be referring to their WISA coaching team, who had relocated there.

(I have absolutely no idea where DelCamp's new partnership is training.)

How is PJ doing?

PJ is lying in 6th place after the SP, with a score of 56.74.

He is at the head of a group of 3 skaters that are covered by just 2.46 points - Elliott Thomson (GBR) and Kornel Witkowski (POL).

He is 7.07 points behind Davide Lewton Brain (MON) in 5th, though. So, he will have to have a very good FS if he wants to climb any places.

The Senior Men's FS is due to start at 18:13:00 GMT. So 3 hours from now.

PJ will be the 7th skater to start. So, first to go in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 18:57:00 GMT. So 3h 44m from now.

PJ is due to start at 19:03:00 GMT. So 3h 50m from now.

And here is the live scoring:

PJ jumped three places to third! So proud! Does he have Worlds minimums?

Yes, he has been attending a Dance Performance College, and had tremendous offers to attend various prestigious Dance Schools at degree level. I was surprised he didn't take any of them up as I saw his future as a dancer on stage, in a company like Matthew Bourne's, touring all over the world. He was a British Champion Solo Ice Dancer at all levels, which was his forte, as he struggled with 3 Jumps in Free Skating, even though coached by Yebin Mok. But the Family took their time and found a great physical match for him in Katarina. Hopefully we'll see them in the JGP next season. Meantime if you hear any news of their training in America, please let us know. Kat was training with Matthew Gates before.
Aha - that makes sense - he has excellent posture, and moves like a dancer.

I'm not sure - it looks like he has the tech requirements in the free skate, but not for the short programme. The ISU site says men must get 34 TES in short and 64 TES in free.

Thanks. I sure hope he gets the short.

Thanks @La Rhumba. Ah yes, now I remember: Eve Chalom & Matthew Gates. Chalom's name I recalled right away, but not so much Matthew's. Still, I definitely saw them compete together back-in-the day.

Thanks for the additional information about Billy's background, and his family's support of his career. It's rather interesting that Kat/Billy are coming back to the U.S. to train, after announcing that Hanretty and Dean (based in Britain) are their coaches. If Matthew Gates is based in the U.S., maybe Kat/Billy are coming here to take up training with Gates for awhile, prior to returning to Britain.

This is purely because both Dean & Hanretty will be busy from now till March working on Dancing on Ice, a TV show we have here, which they're contracted to do. The new series starts early in January.

Lilah, Lewis and Romain already in Tokyo for the GP.

Natasha, Nina and Kristen going to Graz for the Challenger.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. Hanretty and Dean have a lot of irons in the fire, as they should, being the famous veteran specialists that they are. Plus, it's not easy to make a living as a former famous ice dancer, solely via coaching.

Update: Billy & Kat are training with John Kerr and Alper Ucar in Florida..

I agree with you, it's not easy to earn a living purely through coaching. Being part of DOI gives both Chris & Mark chances to still perform on TV, to choreograph and coach a 'celebrity' to learn to skate, though thankfully this year's contestants include some who previously kated as children. The show has been on air since 2006, when Chris Dean would come over from Colorado for half the year. In those days there was also a live Tour after the TV series.

Mark will also be commentating on the next 3 weekends of Grand Prix.

I’m really excited to see what Billy and Kat do. Our Junior Ice Dance needs more teams.
