Ladies Short Program

I remember hearing somewhere once that the PCS was originally designed keeping in mind the best qualities of Michelle Kwan's skating. But Michelle was never particularly fast, and in the last few years, she was downright slow. Under the current PCS system, she would probably score quite poorly (mid 6's) compared to the top skaters. That 30% questionable reputation wouldn't hold her up against the 70% lack of speed. :p
 
Just hoping judges won't hold down Caroline against Kimmie at National. Was Kimmie clean today aside from underrotating her 3t?
 
I just watched Mao, YuNa and Caroline programs.

And wow, I just loved Mao's program. By far the best performance of this SP, even with missed lutz (I think she just tripped on the uneven ice and run out of rink space to attempt it). But dear heavens, her spins, her spirals, her footwork, her posture...! :bow:

Her layback was absolutely amazing, with new positions, better arm positions and that pull-leg-to-face that Caroline does. :love: Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. I think she was robbed on PCS, actually.

I don't think her TES are that surprising, either - it looks like she maxed out her levels + huge GoEs.

I'm more surprised about YuNa's score, especially PCS. But oh, well. Maybe she got bonus points for skating with a smile, I don't mind :laugh:

Exactly. To put Yu-Na behind CZ, judges should've deducted more than 10 points for the 3-3 combo, which I think would've been a joke.

Most Asians consider CZ as an Asian. So what's wrong with 'Every Asian skater'?

My sense is that they will. Why would they let someone not old enough to go to Worlds unthrone last year's national champion and America's best hope for a ladies' medal in Gothenburg?

It didn't stop them from awarding NNN second place behind Kwan even though she was 13. So, who knows?

:biggrin: just found it very funny. How come you can deduct 10 point from a 9.5 base value jump??

hmm. I can't believe one is talking anout Kwan suddenly who won 5 World Chamlpionships and sometime with a bad hip. Kwan skated to the tempo of the music, that is what one should be doing, and how many skaters skate that way? Now let's get back to Mao and YuNa before a 120 page thread opens up on this old old old story. You could, if you want, bring it to The Edge.

Yu Na is more artistic and beautiful then the other skaters. Her other jumps are better and smoother. Her spins are excellent, even if Zhang maybe is better. Her footwork and spirals are excellent too. That is why she deserves to be 1st even with a blown combo.
 
This talk of Caroline's speed, or lack thereof, has me wondering. And if this is a stupid question from a non-skater, I apologize.

Once a program has been choreographed, can a skater really make any improvements in speed that don't compromise the program, or would a dramatic increase in speed require that the program be redone?

Sorry but Yu-Nas score was perfectly fine. The people who got proposterously high scores today were Domnina/Shabalin, Takahashi, and Zhangs. Yu Na on the other hand got exactly what she should have. TES was way worse then it would be for her best performance so her TES also made sense.
 
After watching All ladies SP, I think Yuna's marks is slightly inflated, beside the problems of 3F3T, everything looks perfect for me. Her spins seems faster than COR, and her expression is very nice. I will still put her in front of Zhang.
I am little confused about Mao's mark. I wonder if her 33 is dr or not.
And for Zhang, really good job today. keep on tomorrow and she could finish on the podium.

My thoughts:

Zhang: She skated well, but I'm surprised her triple-triple was ratified. It should've been downgraded, imo. Frankly, her toe jumps are horrid and shouldn't get + GOE. It's especially jarring because all her other elements are beautiful. Her spins are gorgeous, her positions are very precise, and then you see those jumps and they take me want to scream. I think her straightline steps needed more spark, and she needs more speed, power and ice coverage. Probably her best performance of the season. I'm in awe of her consistency.

Nakano: Wuzrobbed, imo. Great performance and her spins are probably the best in the world. They are so fast and she gets so many revolutions.

Kostner: Just as I was letting my inner Carolina fangirl out, she singles the axel. Her triple-triple was gorgeous. Performance-wise, this was her best yet. Her edges are amazing, and I feel like she deserves a higher skating skills score.

Kimmie: I like her a lot, but the triple-.triple was severely under-rotated. I think she's peaked. She's not flexible enough for high level spins, and her triple-triple is gone. Shame, she's a nice skater.

Mao: I guess you can score 59+ on a program without a solo triple jump if your name is Mao Asada. That TES score - wtf? My only guess is that her spins and non-jump elements got high levels and positive goe. They're all beautiful., especially her spirals and steps Still the score seems incredibly inflated.

Yu-Na: Again, beautiful non-jump elements, and nice lutz and axel, but I don't think that's a performance that merited a season's best.
