Alysa Liu changes coaches and moves to Colorado Springs

I think we all would be more receptive to this narrative if this coaching change had happened last summer. What Drew Meekins is saying here sounds like more of a long term goal.
Yet you have no idea what Scali and Abbott's long term goals were with her because they kept it quiet and didn't feel the need to state private info in a PR "try make everything look perfect" article.

Since you have mentioned previously publicly on the forum that you know Jeremy, if you have information from Jeremy that you can share, please let us know.

Otherwise, speaking so harshly about Drew Meekins' quotes seems to come from wanting to protect Alysa's previous coaching team, which personally I don't find convincing. ETA: As I read it, Drew was gracious about Jeremy and Massimo.

Drew, Christy and Viktor are doing what every new coaching team does, and speaking as every new coach does. I don't see any reason to attack them:scratch2:

The problem is, as far as figure skating, Alysa isn't athletic. She is hard working and has a skill set. Courtney Hicks, Tonya Harding, Gracie Gold, Wakaba Higuchi, Alexandra Trusova, Polina, Agnes-ESPECIALLY AGNES Z!-etc etc were 'athletic'. Obviously, 'athletic' isn't enough, because many of this sports greatest 'athletes'/jumpers never succeeded on a high level. Alysa has limitations, and at this stage, Alysa is at the highest level she can obtain, thanks in no small way to her current coaching team. At this point in her training, she should be working only on the small changes she is actually CAPABLE of making. Continuing on the level she has attained through hard work.
That’s one way to look at it. And again, in a few months you might be triumphantly correct.

I’m just saying that why not take a risk, even if the chances of success are allegedly small?

It’s not that any other American is nipping at her heels. Sometimes fortune favors the brave.

Worst case she goes back to the current level, no harm no foul.

"I am honoured to work with Alysa, and humbled to get to help her reach her goals this season," Meekins told Olympics.com. "She is a wonderful human, and a great and talented athlete. ... I told Alysa I will be here to guide her through this difficult yet exciting part of the season, and I look forward to helping her step into a training regimen that is intense, tailored, and strategic. I feel strongly that with this kind of work, she can reach her goals at the U.S. Championships and Olympics."

Meekins added that her previous team, led by Scali, Massimo had done "a wonderful job helping her improve her skating skills and components."

Don’t see anything here that’s controversial. They praise the old coaches and are looking forward to working with her.

Or are there other quotes I missed?

Nobody I don’t think had mentioned this yet, but here are her scores at and after her season best:

219.24
207.40
206.53
202.90

Now, I am not a math major but even I can see that the scores are going in one direction, and that direction isn’t up.

So, I don’t think it’s because of 1 event.
However the level of competition is going up.

Missing 2 events before Lombardia though.

205.2 at Silicon Valley
205.74 at Cranberry

Correct order is like:

205.2
205.74
219.24
207.40
206.53
202.90

The first 2 events are domestics events (Silicon Valley and Cranberry) which have way much more lenient tech calls than international. I would say Alysa remains flat through the whole season with one extremely good Lombardia result.

I know. That’s why I said from her season best onwards. Haha

Not that it matters, but the scores before are nearly identical to post season’s best. No negative in trying something different.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.

Wow. Alysa Liu... Isn't athletic...? The two time (soon to be three time) national champion of the USA isn't athletic? What a joke. That is single handedly the most ridiculous thing I've ever read on this forum.

Totally unwarranted, snarky, snide comment about a sixteen year old girl. If she isn't athletic enough for you, show us how athletic you are.

I am also done with your weird daily posts on Alysa's legs.

Thank you.

I agree. She has gone through puberty, and so she goes through the process of growing. It's natural. She is skating incredibly and beautifully, and we know her skating, skating skills, PCS, maturity, etc has developed very well. Many female skaters have problems with UR. It is something that she can work on, especially after she has now grown. I wish her the best of luck, and great success with her coaching change and what happens ahead leading to the Olympics.

But sometimes you need to make hay while the sun shines.

They don’t want to make an incremental jump, they want a major jump.

Who knows what the landscape looks like in 5 years during the next Olympics.

This could be her one and only shot. Taking a calculated risk isn’t that foolhardy.

Strategically it’s not a bad risk: they see that Bradie is hurt and nobody chasing her is making any real ground up. So they figure take a chance and potentially increase the distance between her and the chasing pack.

Obviously, if this experiment blows up and she doesn’t even win Nationals, then it will be a one way trip to second guess city.

Also, if you have high standards, sacking someone after one bad result isn’t that far fetched. It may not work out, sure but it happens in sports.
In skating it is bad to get a reputation for being a coach hopper. Top coaches don’t want to spend a lot of time and effort on a skater who is gong to leave at the first bad competition. There are more skaters that want to work with the top coaches than there is space for them.

Skating parents - good or bad always add to drama. Still there must be a good reason - moving a teenager just 6 weeks or so before Nationals. I know money is not an issue here. If Arthur wants more intensity maybe he should beg and bribe Eteri? I guess we will have to wait to see how this all works out.
I keep hearing money is indeed an issue. Papa Liu has 5 children and he is a single parent. Skating is expensive and she has no sponsors.

One of Alysa’s great assets is her joy and love for skating. Going to Eteri would kill that pretty fast I suspect.

Mr. Liu wouldn't do that. It would be a nightmare! Plus, I couldn't imagine Alysa skating in Russia.

People have suggested she lose weight. I cannot even. It isn’t just Gracie with eating disorder. There has been a laundry list of elite figure skaters, male and female, who have come forward about severely restricting food or purging or both. If starving oneself is the price to pay for landing a quad we shouldn’t have quads In skating. If starving oneself is the price to beat Russians we shouldn’t worry about beating the Russians. It’s too high a price to pay. I have never seen an elite skater up close who isn’t very small. Sometimes it doesn’t translate to TV. I walked by Javi in the hall at 2016 WC and he is TINY.

Tonya Harding had great 3A decades before women were doing 3A and she was normal weight.

There’s nothing wrong with an occasional ice cream cone as long as she’s not downing a pint a day it should be fine.

I don't think Alysa is happy about this move :( . If you look at her Insta bio right now, it says "I live in the SF Bay Area (not Colorado)"

This is a really bad sign if it was all pushed by her dad when Alysa was happy with her coaching situation

She means that she still lives in San Francisco, and that she'll be traveling to CO only to train.

Losing weight (just a few pounds) doesn't mean you have to "starve" yourself. That's completely two different things. You just try to eat healthier. More veggies/fruits. Cut back on soda and junk food. Let's face it, Tonya won't be able to rotate quad like Kamila. Tonya didn't land 3A as much as Tuk in competitions.
