I'm just having a hard time picturing a scenario in which it would make a difference. If Karen gets a medal (or comes in 4th with Isabeau ahead of her) she's in, and if she misses the top 5 she's out. If Karen is in 4th or 5th, I don't think they'd bump Mariah (who has a higher SB), Amber (who got passed over in favor of Karen once already and has now posted a 200+ score internationally), or Bradie if any of them medal.

It would help our somewhat weakened international standing in this sport to do as well as possible in the Olympics. So my best guess is: Alysa, Mariah, and Karen/Bradie. I WILL be starting a new thread regarding my opinion on the Russian dominance in this sport, across all disciplines and how it is ruining the sport of figure skating.

Editing to add a PS: Isn't Mariah's simpler costumes a refreshing change for the overly decorated and accessorized costumes of some other competitors? Sequined gloves, beaded headbands, bedazzled costumes, and my least fav...tights over the boots (looks clunky). Need I say more?

Both Karen and Mariah can be good performers. Karen's FS at Kansas City Nationals was gorgeous, as was Mariah's FS in Greensboro. While both have in the past landed multiple 3-3s, this year both have been more PCS queens than technical skaters. I join the chorus who thinks Mariah was overscored in Russia, with a clean program with no quad, no 3A, no 3-3, normally scoring nowhere near the 140 she received in the FS. Both of these ladies know it's an Olympic year, know Olympic competition will have 3-3s or better, yet neither has yet produced competitive jumps. In addition to 3 Russians, skaters such as Kaori, Mai, Young You, Leona H, all have exceeded 210 this season, leaving US skaters without high scoring combos very vulnerable.
 
So I've seen multiple people say that Mariah was overscored at Rostelecom but genuinely curious, where exactly would you mark her lower on?

I also feel the number looks high as it is but unless she had uncalled tech issues (I haven't gone through her performances in detail), her GOEs were not super high and her PCS is reasonable (below 70).

I don't think she was overscored.

Judges like her and I can see why they like her in her programs.

I notice there were jumps where she received 1.5ish GOE and one or two with like 0.7 GOE. So it's not like they were blindly throwing GOE at her.

It makes me worried about Alysa though. Judges really don't want to cough up a single decimal point of GOE for her. I still can't understand what's so problematic about her jumps (like from a visual perspective, I'm told they're small etc but they don't look THAT bad) but then again I'm not good at that!

Mariah's SP dress is amazing. All class. It's so attractive and stunning.

I don't think this is true. If Alysa lands her triple axel on the q, she could certainly be in the top flight. Young and Wakaba arent any more likely to land their axels than Alysa is at this point. Rika might not return this season at full strength. The other non-Russian women are vulnerable to small mistakes and reputation scoring. Alysa is very capable of being top 6 after the short, and top 6 overall.
I don't believe any of the US women consider being 6-12 after the short a win. It would likely mean they made mistakes, and everyone wants to skate clean at the Olympics regardless of how they place.

It makes sense she's had 1 decent competition outing and 1 excellent competition outing - this would be her third competition in three weeks, that's a recipe for a bad outing and Mariah doesn't need that to happen and be the last impression to the USFS committee before Nationals.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe if there were more time, but since Rostelecom went so well, why risk all the travel and fatigue? And now Amber has another chance to put down a good score.

Agree, the argument against it from others has been that it would unfair at this point to change the criteria when they already announced the tiered selection. Though Nationals haven't happened yet so I don't necessarily see a problem if they said no one has had a great season, everyone comes to Nationals on equal footing and top 3 age-eligible go.

Hmm. The more I read on this stuff, the more I draw the conclusion that the Committee should probably just send the top 3 finishers this time. Then, whatever happens…happens. Doesn’t sound like anyone has been truly convincing enough to justify a deviation…

Kinda like in 2010 when no one stood out and it was a free for all…and only 2 spots…
