Jason Brown

And while we wait, this interview with Max Aaron (well worth reading on its own, of course) where he has nice things to say about Jason

Although Aaron was recognized for his quad jumps, he doesn’t necessarily emphasize quads in his teaching. “Keep an open mind, is what I tell these skaters,” Aaron said. “Everyone has their own path. And it’s not truly about the quads. Yes, quads are definitely a point-grabber. But you look at skaters like Jason Brown. Yeah, he can do a quad. But he doesn’t necessarily even need a quad. He brings another value to the sport, and a different angle, from his artistic side and his athleticism in his spins, where he grabs those points. Yes, the quads are cool. But there’s a million different ways to become the best.”

Max is such a mensch :)

You forgot the other excellent part, el henry!

Max knew ;) Max is one of us :D

I miss him so much :(
I think he has always truly been a fan of the sport and always will be. He would be so great to listen do commentary once in awhile.

My silly dream is for him to come back to USFS in a financial capacity later in his career. I am sure with time he will gain the skills to be great at it. And with his personal touch turn it around and make some money... and use it to fund young skaters!

Well, not to get too off topic, but I wouldn't blame Max if he never wanted to have anything to do with USFS formally ever again...though he did joke in a podcast earlier this year that perhaps he will start a big company and then one day instead of it being the Geico US National Championships it will be the Max Aaron Co US National Champions

On a more serious note, I sincerely hope that even if GPF doesn't go ahead and Jason goes to Golden Spin, he is very careful. We still don't know enough about Omicron and it seems it may have been in Europe well before South Africa found it...

Apparently GPF is cancelled, but Jason is still on the list for Golden Spin which was updated yesterday. His team are incredibly sensible in not withdrawing him straight away! I do think a lot of other competitors are going to be scrambling to find another competition which is going to very difficult this late in the season.

There are no other ISU competitions between Golden Spin and Europeans, so focusing on respective Nationals is the only option.

Fingers crossed for Jason in Croatia!

There’s 4Conts and whilst I imagine most olympic hopefuls would skip it because of the proximity to the Olympics, I wonder if we now may see some skaters considering it in order to get more international judging feedback and also world standing points.

Jason is taking this so much better than I am 😢(because I selfishly want to see him skate, not arguing with the decision). Very classy.

But the fact that he qualified for GPF is in and of itself is a major achievement, and wherever he skates from here on in, he will always have that. :hap10:

I think he will be fine. I have to think that they originally planned on him competing at Golden Spin because they knew it would take him awhile to recover from the injury - and while I’m sure they hoped he would do well at both GPs and make the final - and while I’m sure they’re thrilled he did 😊 - under the circumstances I doubt they were counting on it.

I’m really interested to see how he does at Golden Spin! No it’s not as prestigious, but he has historically done well there and it will give him a chance to try out his programs with the additional tweaks. It would also be great if he could improve on his seasons best - though of course that depends on how he skates.

We all know this season might be his last and it’s possible if he makes the Oly Team that will be his last comp. 🙁 But you never know - if they do reschedule GPF to the end of the season, maybe he will go!

I think he'll go to Worlds too. There's a big possibility he'll retire after this season, but I don't see him as a skater who cannot wait for Olympics to happen to retire. He has that energy about him where he's trying new things and not settling. But it's a literal intuition and I could be wrong. After the Olympics he can train for a couple of months more to do one or two more competitions especially since his changes of medaling are not slim. Not every skater does an Adam Rippon and says goodbye at the Olympics (not that it's wrong, they know best).

I am seriously considering attending Worlds on the off chance Jason (and Piper and Paul) might be there. I think there’s a good chance he may wrap up his season there - as much as I love him he isn’t getting an individual medal, but I can see Nathan sitting out Worlds and Hanyu is unknown at this state, so it’s likely that there could be more room for surprises. I can see him wanting to get the most out of his final season - his goal has been to make the olympics so if he does, going to worlds is just like an extra icing on the cake?

as much as I love him he isn’t getting an individual medal,
Depends on how many skaters decide to skip it. I think if he goes clean , even with no one skipping it, he has a chance. Clean, he can score 280+ and we know how it can go for the others. 2018 Worlds was a complete disaster if I remember correctly. But this is only mathematical chance, it would still be unlikely with all the Olympics top men going, substract two or three and the chances get bigger especially if he's still peaking. He does not need all the quads to score high like others. He has an even bigger chance if GPF is held. (Kevin Aymoz was in third with 275 not so long ago)
And, come on, it's the men, very unpredictable. Remember Rostelecom? :)

And to hearten us, praise from for Jason from Anna Levandi, a former competitive skater for the Soviet Union and mother and coach of the charming Arlet Levandi:

Interviewer: The example of Jason Brown, who is getting very high scores, immediately comes to mind.

Anna Levandi: If we are talking about Brown, we must understand that it is not about jumps at all. Only a few people in the world know how to skate the way he does it. And there is a colossal work behind this. For example, I am not ready to put someone else on equals with Jason in the ability to skate.

I do not understand the Russian media's obsession with Jason, (well, I do, but this is a positive space and I'm keeping it positive ;)) but I am grateful because it provides us quotes like this one. :)
