The End of Albena and Maxim | Golden Skate

The End of Albena and Maxim

I didn't think they'd be coming back to competition anyway, even before the DWI.

I wonder if she will find a new partner?

Unfortunately, no--she doesn't want to compete without Maxim, so it looks like they will skate exhibitions. As I understand it, it's Maxim's choice, since he feels guilty after what happened. It turns out the family of the victim is supportive of Maxim and Albena. I've always believed in forgiveness =)

Aren't there legal proceedings still pending? Or has that all been resolved?

Also, when you refer to the family of the victim, is that the person who died, or the person who was left in a coma? Has the latter person recovered, does anyone know?

I was thinking there was still a lot to be resolved about the whole tragic affair, but maybe I am just unaware of the latest developments.

The woman who was in a coma has recovered consciousness, Praise G-d! She still needs extensive rehabilitation, and, there are still criminal proceedings pending. However, Maxim's chances of avoiding extensive incarceration have probably skyrocketed -- her care will be extremely expensive, so I am sure Bulgaria (and her family) all want Maxim working and earning to pay for it, rather than doing so themselves.

Why could the need to provide financial compensation for one of the victims possibly reduce the length of incarnation for a criminal case? I think that these are different issues.

Besides, I feel that they may have already had a lot of money to cover medical expenses, which can be a lot cheaper than those in the US. Although FS is an expensive sport, their earning through GP series, ice shows, all the sponsors, and the media appearance may have already made a fortune.

I really didn't think they'd come back to competition anyway before all this happened. I would have loved it though since they are my favorite dance team. I'm just sorry that their accomplishments will be tainted by this tragedy. I'm glad to hear they'll still be skating though even if sounds like they'll only be performing in Europe.

Me too.I love their skating but I don't think they would have come back anyway. They can make money from shows.Although I do think they could do with making some fresh new programmes they are doing all the same moves now .

...

If Maxim is incarcerated, he can't earn anything during his sentence. In his case, he probably won't be able to earn too much after his release -- even if he can get back into performing shape, too much time will have passed and other stars will have come onto the scene. So, if he has to pay for care for the victim, then he has to "strike while the iron is hot".

Well I am going to be the bad girl here.....

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DECIDE TO DRINK AND DRIVE!!

So hopefully on this New Years Eve someone will take this into account. While Iliked thier skating at times....when you make a stupid decision then you deserve the consequences!! I don't feel sorry for them at all.

I know I am mean but I feel very strongly about this!!

sillylion - I agree... drinking and driving is too serious to ignore and just go 'oh well, it happens'

it does happen, but that doesn't mean it SHOULD happen or be ignored.

From his comments and actions since the accident, I'd have to say Maxim himself would agree.

Keeping this in mind, may you have a safe and prosperous New Year everyone!

Well, I had been hoping they'd get an Olympic medal, but Maxim has ended all that. How sad.

Safe New Year's Eve everyone.

I don't think you're a bad girl ... except that I wouldn't say I have no sympathy for "them." "They" did not drink and drive. "He" did. That's why I think DUI is so terrible. It brings down consequences on so many other people who did nothing criminal.

But it wouldn't have anything to do with the way a sentence for a criminal case is decided.

1. He has yet to be actually ... convicted of any offense. I reserve judgement until the legalities are resolved.

2. If he did drive while impaired (the most likely scenario) it's completely possible to simultaneously believe he should suffer the full legal consequences of that and 'feel sorry' for him, not to mention his life partner who is surely suffering from this and as far as anyone knows, quite blameless.
