US Olympic Team Announced

It's obvious why they chose Jason and it was the correct decision strategically.

No it wasn't. He has no chance of medaling and Ilia is someone who could be winning Worlds as early as next year if given the experience. Hell, maybe even THIS year, given that Nathan and Hanyu likely won't go. They are shooting themselves in the foot by not supporting him.

I'm not happy about that ! Seriously USFS is really keeping at home Ilia who has made 6 quad in this competition ! This is a scandal like in 2014 with the controversy choice of Ashley Wagner over Mirai Nagasu. USFS seem to like to put scandal with their sentimental favorite skater. What a shame !

It was the most logical decision. You're not gonna send someone who skated a clean 6 quad competition only once and only managed to be 12 points above someone like Jason with mistakes. Jason who also has scored more than them internationally all the damn season and beyond. Jason who has the GOE and PCS nationally and internationally and the reputation. Jason who beats cleanish quad jumpers time and time and time again internationally. Jason who has never had a placement lower than 10th in his life. Jason who gets over 250 internationally even when he messes triples and spins. It's obvious why they chose Jason and it was the correct decision strategically.
All great points, but there is such a thing as investing in the future of men's skating. Wouldn't be a bad idea for Ilia to go to Olympics and get more experience. Didn't Polina go to 2014 Olympics after placing 2nd at Nationals?

It's inadvisable in the crud era to have your first alternate travel to another country shortly before the big event. Omicron is highly contagious---planes, airports and cabs are risky. And there's no 'bubble' in Tallinn.

My dream team would have been Nathan, Jason and Ilia 🥲 But I understand they couldn't have left Vincent off (even if he's terribly inconsistent) since he's in a higher priority group in the selection criteria than Jason and Ilia, if I understand correctly.

I really hope Ilia can get the senior Worlds minimums somewhere and will be selected to go there. 🙏

This is nothing like 2014. Mirai had one decent competition and she should have gone to the Olympics over Ashley who was way more successful over the previous two seasons? Ummm no.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes.

I wouldn't have minded Ilia instead of Vincent, but not instead of Jason.

USFS is actually capable of making the right decision, selecting the strongest team *now*, and following its own criteria. Who'd a thunk it?

yes yes yes yes yes. yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes.

And I like Ilia, I've seen Ilia skate live, he's a firecracker with a bright future. But this was the correct decision *now*(y)

ETA: and I am being a tad hypocritical, because I always said "first three go". the unusual circumstances of this season and last have influenced me.

This really sucks for Ilia...and he can't even go to senior worlds because he doesn't have the tech minimum. Junior worlds is not a good consolation. I wonder if they'd send him to 4CC when he's the first alternate?

I think that would be the correct team. The argument that Ilia is young and he can go 2026, is so wrong. Jason was young in 2014. Chen and Zhou were 18 in 2018. I'm so sad for Malinin.
I'm so very sad for Ilia and so annoyed.

It would have been smart to send him and invest in the future. Even if he fell on every jump it would have been an excellent lesson for him for 2026. He's hungry and driven. It would have been a great experience for him and if he did well, it would have bolstered his reputation.

Ugh

I've been bothered by a lot of stuff with figure skating but this really really really hit me!!!!!

Ilia already has the FS minimum. He just needs the SP one. He could go to 4CC to get it there, but being the #1 alternate for the Olympics makes that highly unlikely. The Bavarian Open is the same week as 4CC, so that's out.

The Merano Ice Trophy (4-6 Feb), Jegvirag (11-13 Feb) and Challenge Cup (24-27 Feb) are possibilities.

There was never going to be an answer here that people would be happy with, because honestly all four of these guys had points for and against them, but I will say this: the debate should never have have been Brown Vs. Malinin, and no, I'm not referring to the fact that they literally failed to call one of Zhou's falls in his protocols (look, I like Zhou, but that was beyond ridiculous), I'm referring to the fact that Zhou and Malinin have exactly the same risks attached.

Malinin has been consistent this season, but last I checked, this has been the first season we have seen anything like consistency from him, and while both Malinin and Zhou, on their best days, have the potential to be on the Worlds podium, they both also have the potential to bomb so badly they fail to make the freeskate entirely. We have literally seen that happen with Zhou.

Seriously, Brown may be at risk of losing to Kolyada, but Zhou is as risk of losing to Donavan Carillo. Now what do we think the outcome will be if both Malinin and Zhou bomb that badly?

Look, I actually like Zhou, under-rotations and all, and I really wanted Malinin on the team after his showing this weekend, but they shouldn't be putting both of them on the team at once. The odds of the US getting a podium sweep, even with both at their best, is only slightly above zero, and dependent on several others, including Hanyu, bombing, and in the grand scheme of things, AKA the medals table, there isn't a whole lot of difference between a 4th place and an 8th place for USFS. At the Olympics, 4th is just 1st loser. But USFS does have to consider more than just individual medals, they also have the team event to keep in mind, and I honestly wouldn't trust Zhou, or even Malinin that much, to put out a clean short in the team event. There's no way USFS are going to make Chen skate both programs for the team event, if they use him at all, and Chen's never really excelled in the short program - Brown can and has bested Chen there before. The SP has literally the same number of spins and step sequences that the FP does, with only half the number of jumping passes and only two of them permitted to be quads, so not having a quad doesn't really impact Brown as much here. He could potentially place first in the team SP and set USA up to make a challenge on the gold, but Zhou or even Malinin could bomb badly enough to cost them the silver. It's a big risk, and they'd be stupid to take it on a million-to-one chance for a podium sweep.

Well I don’t think he should sign his transfer papers just yet. Jason Brown spent four hours in a car ( unmasked I have a feeling ) with a woman who just tested positive positive for Covid

there is a good chance that one of those three will not be able to skate in Beijing and this young man will be on the team.

Personally I would’ve dropped Zhou because he has proved that when he gets really important he can totally bomb

I would have dropped Brown - as it stands right now he's doing program content that would be struggling to place bronze on the Ladies podium.

And basically they rendered their own National championships worthless - think about it the entire event could have been skipped for the men. Zhou didn't get bounced for his bad FS and Brown didn't get bounced for a young gun that skated 2 phenomenal programs and placed second at nationals and skated a program that's actually competitive with the men's field.
