I just don't understand why TT went to the camp anyways when it's already compromised. Even if they fudge the tests in Russia, the Chinese will not let them get away with it if someone is tested positive.
At a guess, they might not be able to enter China earlier, the risk is considered comparable and they need to train in the time zone with sufficient ice time already arranged for them.

I'm not sure why they went either, however remember Sambo is not somewhere they can isolate the senior girls and maybe there was not time to get a secondary location. TT and Russia are poised to sweep the ladies, I would think they would be as careful as possible to not risk it

And IDK about China, they recently announced a higher threshold for what triggers a positive test. And considering they are bubbling the entire event, if a decent number of top athletes cannot compete because of a positive test, perhaps they adjust their policy. However no one should count on it, that is just my speculation.

I didn't pay much attention to the Tokyo Olympics, but there weren't many people who were disqualified due to getting infected with the virus, right? If they make it into the bubble without testing positive, they should be safe(er) I hope.

Not so simple, unfortunately. Omicron is so much more contagious it spreads like wildfire. These Olympics are truly cursed.

they have adjusted the threshold down from 40 to 35... and the isolation rules... but we will see how equitable this whole mess ends up being

Not a ton, but there were a handful. Off the top of my head, Sam Kendricks was probably the highest profile one who had to withdraw

You'd think so... but their behaviour at competitions seemed to indicate they DNGAF. Appears to be coming back to bite them

Gorshkov: “As they say, we all walk under God. On our part, everything necessary and possible is being done to minimize the risks of infection."

I can list 3-4 things they have done between Europeans and getting into the training camp that have put them at greater risk of getting the virus.

This article links to a more detailed blog that suggests that China doesn’t allow flights after February 1st, and that might have been a reason why they decided to not wait on negative tests, including for Kolyada (to allow him to participate in the individual event)

As I have understood it there are a picked number of skaters reserved for the home country if they do not manage to qualify for the OG. However, if the home country does have enough skaters qualified, these extra spots can be used to fill up the team event. So, if China had not qualified for the individual events in mens's and women's, two of the spots would be for them, and there would have been the picked - 2 for the team event to make use of. It's not the case - as China has skaters in all the individual events - so these extra posts can be used to fill up the TE.
I’m pretty sure teams had to qualify in three disciplines…and these three countries were granted one team “addition” that did not otherwise qualify in their discipline. Countries with two qualified events were not granted two additions to field all four disciplines.

I sure hope they are all negative when the test day comes to get in Olympic safe zone. The Olympic competition would not be the same without the top Russian qualifiers.
Same here, caught Covid on New Year eve apparently in the supermarket (haven't been anywhere else), had symptoms for 3 days and thought I was fine then, but had no energy for another two weeks, slowly coming back to normal, house is a mess, simple tasks like dusting & hoovering were beyond my level of 'fitness'. So yes I do not see how athletes could compete in this kind of state.
As to Mika withdrawal I just have no words right now... :(
saddens me too! I want to be optimistic that this is the last withdrawal due to Covid, but I really am anxious when I think about it. I think most teams should start arriving soon - so fingers crossed no positive tests before departure and none upon arrival! 🙏🤞☮️

some athletes have started to arrive in China (Canadian moguls team)... they were tested before going... we will see how it works out for them and others upon arrival ===> joining the Olympic bubble

First bunch has been checked into the village for at least 12 hours and haven't heard any reports of anyone having testing issues. So *fingers crossed*

5 members from team Canada are in the Covid protocol right now... no names were given as further testing will be conducted... no names will be given without the consent of the athletes but it will be easy to find out.... so we are talking here about 5 people who were clear to fly to Beijing and tested positive upon arrival

Nous suivons les règles de Beijing 2022. Un des éléments de notre stratégie était d’arriver tôt pour laisser le temps de subir un test de confirmation et, au besoin, au processus du panel d’experts médicaux de se déployer.

Dang @4everchan that's bad news.

Also breaking, the Slovenian flag bearer has arrived in China, and he's tested positive, too. A snowboarder medalist from prior Games. I don't know a lot about snowboarders or Slovenia, but I imagine he's a sort of national hero.

I still have high hopes that these people will test negative in time to join the bubble... I know of plenty of people who got covid while traveling and had to delay their flight a week or so, until their test came back negative to fly back to Canada... so sometimes, it's a question of a few days... there is still time... hoping the same for the Slovenian athlete.

Is this only in figure skating or the Team Canada for all sports going to Beijing? Either way, very stressful. I hope there isn´t any figure skaters involved :(
