She is citing a hip injury and is very disappointed. From the US Figure Skating press release:

“I’m extremely disappointed to have to miss the U.S. Championships,” Hughes said. “This is a competition I’ve been looking forward to all season.”

“This injury is just really bad timing,” Hughes continued. “I hope to be able to begin serious training again in four to six weeks.”

I hope Emily can make a fast and successful recovery. She has some of the best choreographed programs this season and I was excited to see them again.

This complicates the issue of the US spots at Worlds even further. :(

(I put it here in the edge so the max # of folks see this. If you want to move it to the nats folder you can do so.)

Hughes is suffering from a hip injury, which will prevent her not only from competing but also training.

I just started a thread in the edge folder, I dunno if the mods wish to merge?

She will be missed. Her showing at SC was greatly improved from SA. Her withdrawal makes the ladies' competition more unpredictable and less interesting.

Actually to me, more unpredictable means MORE interesting. I'm not a fan of predictability when it comes to these events.

Still, my interest in the event did go down a bit. But I still plan on watching.

Will US figure skating association give her bye to the Words? If she doesn't make it to the worlds, I will greatly miss her LPs, which is one of the best programs of the season.

Probably not. It's a shame if we don't get to see her programs again though. If anyone decides to withdraw from 4CC, she might be able to go.

THanks for the link and update but I'm so sad to hear this. The bad news has to stop!!!! Here's wishing Emily a speedy recovery (and that she kicks butt on her first semester finals too!!)

I have a feeling that's all for Emily. It appears that college life and goals have taken a front seat, as it should. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.....42

I wonder if she'll petition for a bye to World's, especially if Caroline Z and Mirai N end up on the podium. The 2 of them are too young to go to Sr World's and it would be a valid arguement that she probably would have ended up going.

This does put the ladies' chances at maintaining 3 spots even more precarious. Kimmie will likely finish in the top 10. Who else would go? Bebe and Alyssa have not had great experiences at Worlds.

I don't like her skating at all. But I do believe U.S. needs her to retain the three spots for 2009 worlds.

Yep, we needed Emily, Kimmie and Ashley to reatin the three spots. I can't see any other ladies that could hlep Ashley and Kimmie at this point.

Such sad news for Emily! and the rest of us who were looking forward to seeing her at Nationals.

Here's to a speedy and full recovery.

Really sad news for Emily and the skating community - on the ice and the fans off of it. Was so hoping to see her at Nationals. Really enjoyed her at SA, she really puts excitement and joy into her programs. Fun to see.

This just gets more and more complicated. I certainly hope this is the last of the injuries in ALL disciplines. Egads! Enough is enough.

Speedy recovery, Emily. We will miss you in St. Paul.

Wow... this is very bad. Emily simply makes any competition more fun... So sad.

Here's wishing her a speedy recovery.

Wow, bad things really do happen in threes: Dorothy Hamill has breast cancer, Christopher Bowman dies, and Emily/Melissa & Denis all withdraw from US Nats with injuries. I am totally over all the bad stuff happening and am getting very anxious for some GOOD news. :sheesh:

Get well soon Emily!
