Emily Hughes Withdraws

No chance for a bye. If she can't even train for 4-6 weeks, that means she wouldn't be returning to practice ice until a couple of weeks before Worlds.

Since now she won't be competing for the US at Worlds 2008, that would make her eligible to switch countries and represent Canada at the 2010 Olympics. She'd have a much easier time qualifying in Canada than she would in the US. She is a Canadian citizen......

Sorry to hear that. I wanted to see her at the worlds. Am I the only one who thinks this is the time for Hughes to start to decline? With the worst senario, that US women get only 2 tickets next year, I doubt she would make the world team in 2008. Aside from injuries, Zhang and Nagasu will improve tremendously in 2 years. I'm afraid 2007 was the last time we saw her at worlds.

Good idea if she changes her citizenship, but since she is the reigning silver medalist, would it be easy? Wouldn't the decision backfire her image?

I hope she will recover soon. I don't want to see skaters with injury.

Takes the wind out of ones sails! Nats will miss her sparkle & joyous enthusiasm. The announcement is terse, offering little information as to details. Skate for another country? The Hughes don't seem to be the kind of folks to take the easy road. I believe they are upfront and forthcoming. We shall see. At any rate, Nationals just won't be the same.

Another big shock of the season!!
Hope she recovers without any sequela.

Can she have an entry to the coming Worlds?
What is the current USFSA rule for this?

Do we need her to keep the 3 spots??? I thought only the top 2 ladies add points. I think Ashley would do be better than Emily, but yeah... Emily was a good back up. It's bad news anyway... we need a reliable 3th lady!!!

Oh, no! I was looking forward to seeing Emily skate & compete at Nationals. Best wishes to her for a full and speedy recovery.

That's not good news. Emily was becomiing a dynamic skater and now it's over for this year anyway. Hope she takes care of the hip before it gets to the 'replacement' stage. In fact, I kind of think that is what the WD is all about. So best wishes for getting back the full use of the hip, and maybe a return to competitive skating.

I was figuring on Emily and Ashley battling it out at Worlds for a top 10 placement. We'll see what happens to the World Team.

I hope she recovers to skate again. I will miss her at Nats. With her international (inc Olys) experience, I think she would have been an asset to the US ladies team. It's going to put pressure on Ashley (and Kimmie) to ensure that aggregate 13 (or less).
As much as I love Bebe and Alyssa, I don' t have confidence in them to deliver when it counts.

I think it's a wise choice for her. Better to let the hip heal fully than try to push herself and make it worse. Don't know about a bye for Worlds - four to six weeks of recovery is cutting it awfully close!

Emily already has Canadian citizenship. Poppa Hughes, who is Canadian, put in applications for the entire family based on their time spent in Canada over the years (his entire family lives there). The Hughes kids got their Canadian passport several years ago.

So if Emily decides she wants to skate for Canada, there's nothing the USFS can do about it. And if it's a choice of 'image' vs. skating at the Olympics again, I think image bites the dust. I doubt very much if Emily would be able to make the Olympic team in the US in 2010.

I have a feeling that's all for Emily. It appears that college life and goals have taken a front seat, as it should. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.....42

I tend to agree....I'm not sure she can come back next year - though I hope she can. If she want's to, I think she'll need to attend school pt. time. If she plant to try for Vancouver, then she'll need to take a semester off.

Rats, I was looking forward to seeing her skate.

I wonder if she'll petition for a bye to World's, especially if Caroline Z and Mirai N end up on the podium. The 2 of them are too young to go to Sr World's and it would be a valid arguement that she probably would have ended up going.

This does put the ladies' chances at maintaining 3 spots even more precarious. Kimmie will likely finish in the top 10. Who else would go? Bebe and Alyssa have not had great experiences at Worlds.

When I responded to the post above this one, I hadn't thought about a petition for worlds...I wonder if she would be healthy enough? certainly the age issue of current sr.'s might be in her favor

Good point. I think if she recovers by 4CC, USFSA can send her there and see how she does.

I do hope she continues her skating career. I am not a fan of hers, but she does add invaluable skill and experience to the US team.

If she has to be off the ice for four-six weeks, she won't be able to compete at 4C's, and she would be questionable for Worlds.

And as much as I want her to be there to help secure 3 spots for Worlds, I dont want her to injure herself more. :frown: I hope its not to the point where she might need surgery. Get well soon!!

I am really nervous about Kimmie, Ashley & ??? trying to pull off the chance to get three spots, although Im rooting for them to do so.

It would be a tragedy if they dont since there are such amazing girls waiting in the wings for those three spots. That age rule is really sucking right now. :frown:

I hope the US keeps the 3 spots! It would be such a shame given the young talent coming up for next year....................
