Mariah is the national champion. She has the better scores. Yes, she beat karin in a very sportive way the whole season and now she got screwd. Its unfair and not sport. And why giving the men two slots and not the woman? Its all so rigged against a certain camp (aratyunan, he critisized tge fed harsly for their non sportive decision to leave malinin at home) in favor of anthother camp. Don't be blind
They can only split 2 disciplines. Men's and dance are the strongest for the USA so they decided to split those.

The Men's Individual event SP is tomorrow and 2 days later is the FS; my guess is Nathan and/or the Fed did not want to wear Nathan out with doing 4 programs in 6 days. The Ladies event is on the 15th/17th so that should be enough time for the ladies skater to be able to recover, additionally none of the US ladies do the taxing routines like Nathan does where they are attempting multiple quads, the most difficult we get from Karen tonight is 1 triple-triple.

The beating the dead horse about Alysa/Mariah not being picked is so over the top. Do I wish we had more visibility into why they chose her and when? Sure. But I can’t imagine that USFS would leave their supposed savior of US skating Alysa at home for no reason. There is no history of bias against her, if anything there has been favoritism towards her (not calling her unders in 2020). Not to mention that with a COVID diagnosis there was no guarantee that she would test negative through PCR in time to fly to Beijing early. We still have no confirmation of her even being in the Olympic village, and she supposedly flew out on Friday.

As for Mariah, yes? I’m sure it’s disappointing, but I would also imagine she was passed up for a reason. She hasn’t historically done well at end of the year competitions like Worlds (best placing 9th two years ago). And comparing Karen to Mariah is pretty much a draw. Karen had higher world placements, Mariah had (read: 2) GP medals. They were essentially tied at Nationals. Both have issues with under rotations and 3-3’s. Without Alysa being a real option, it was more of a coin toss with these two. No, they didn’t follow their own ranking system, but that was out the window when Alysa tested positive anyway.

I am hoping Lindsay is ready and able to come if needed.
I’m hoping to see Alysa in the team USA box tonight. Otherwise it will spark serious doubts about her testing negative when she got to Beijing. People have tested negative and then positive in Beijing before (see France’s poor Adam). I doubt the USFS would say anything were that the case, probably waiting it out to contest a positive like France did. I wouldn’t see them calling in an alternate until maybe 4-5 days before the event starts.

Mariah’s 9th place finish at Worlds functionally netted the same number of points as Karen’s 4th place finish in 2021.

And she has 3 GP medals, tying Bradie for most among American women over the quad vs. Karen, who has 0.

I was referring to medals in the last quad, but thanks. Karen falling has really brought the cattiness out of some users here. You’d think she skinned Mariah’s bunny alive or something.

Welp, this did turn into a bloodbath, much as I feared. :slink:

Good luck in the free Karen!
Absolutely not a bloodbath toward Karen and the toxic positivity toward USFSA only allows issues of bias/corruption to go unchecked.

Karen’s abilities are her abilities and they were known prior to her selection. She didn’t “bomb” anything, she skated in line with her abilities. No one should be shocked or disappointed in her for doing what she does. 64-68ish is where she is scoring right now with sometimes absent 3-3 and < and she did just that.

You don’t get mad at H/B for not scoring 80+. But when you have H/D and C/B and choose to send out H/B under unknown and increasingly shady looking circumstances then we have problems.

I’m still Karen’s fan and will always be her fan. Everything I said about her being the best choice in the event that Alysa was impacted by Covid still holds true for me. Hoping for a clean and beautiful FS from her tonight.

According to Jackie Wong - Karen's practice today did not go well: Chen: 1Lo, 1Lo, 3Lo(fall), 3Lo, marked jumps in runthru, 3Lo2T, 1S, 1S, 3S, 3Lz, 3Lz2T2Lo, 3F(e?), 3Lz2T2Lo, 3Lo

Agree with the rest of your post, but I wouldn’t compare Alysa and Mariah to H/D and C/B. The difference in skill set and scoring potential just isn’t the same.

Edit: Alysa in the team USA box! Clearly her team is making her clip back her bangs, which is a bummer because they’re quite cute.

From personal experience bangs and mask don't always go together the best from a comfort level

Well, I'm still annoyed at the USFS for being shady and ignoring their own protocols for choosing the TE members, and upset for Mariah and Alysa, but what's done is done. I'm glad Karen was able to have a redemption skate and shake off yesterday. And I hope Mariah and Alysa have two amazing skates in the individual and show the USFS that they could have delivered in the TE :hap10:

I’m glad I am not the only one to skip this forum for the entire team event. Christine Brennan make Karen’s fall like the end of the world — reminds me of a lot of articles when Nathan falls 2-3 times in TE in 2018. Nerves happens, it’s not the end of the world!!! It didn’t make USA to lost a medal. Everyone needs to calm down.

I don’t get why we still arguing on why USFS pick Karen over Mariah or Alysa. You or the skaters (and the coaches) can complain to USFS - it has nothing to do with Karen and really nothing to do with us because the decision HAD BEEN MADE! USFS will not be reading this forum and say “oh, people doesn’t like this decision hmmm maybe we should post something” cuz they have a bigger problem now with Vincent testing positive for Covid-19–especially when Vincent skated yesterday and interact with the other team!!!

There are more to life than one competition. Breath in, breath out and it is going to be okay.

It is a discussion forum for figure skating and we are allowed to express our opinions on federations and the decisions that impact the skaters. Get over it.

My issue here is that those defending the choice have no issue bringing up every weak moment that Mariah/ Alysa have ever had. Claiming that Mariah didn't deserve to win Nationals, ( she was overscored but no more so than Karen... #robbed may be something that Isabeau or Lindsay could claim but not Karen) downplaying her and Alysa's scoring potential, saying Alysa had a serious case of COVID-19 and downplaying their previous successes. (Often making inaccurate statements in their desire to prove how unstable/ undeserving they are) and yet claim others are being rude to Karen when accurate information is presented that doesn't place the selection in a good light. It's quite hypocritical.

On a personal level, I'm happy that Karen skated better in the FS. It must have been a huge relief for her. I'm glad she skated to potential and it was a beautiful program. Good Job, Karen !

However, that doesn't make the team selection any less shady. I was so pleased with the US fed because they followed their criteria exactly as written in Olympic selection and then they did this shady thing which both hurt the teams final score and took away Alysa's chances for a team medal despite being the one who was in the highest priority group. It ruined my new found confidence in the process. I'm disappointed in the US fed. It's perfectly ok to express that and to explain why. I've done that so I am finished. But, those of you defending the choice do not have the high moral ground.
