Yuzuru Hanyu: 2021-22

These last days have been...
On one hand, a costly misfortune in the Short, an injury at Open Practice Wednesday, he looked a bit better at the last practice but didn't try 4A there, then these two falls in the Free, add to that his underscoring (although he was less underscored here than he often is but this < call on a near-rotated, at worst q 4A must be a painful sting to him albeit worth only 1.25pt with the fall) and overscoring of others (Shoma gets less overscored in time but others, it's indecent to see rules ignored to such a point, it's so heavy that I wonder if with fair scores he wouldn't be still Gold).
On the other hand, we could witness a Rondo Capriccioso and a Ten to Chi reaching unimaginable levels of perfection, emotion, musicality... We have watched History. It's more than just History of figure skating. I believe I will watch them very often if I manage to detach myself from the pain which the pop and the falls probably inflicted Yuzuru Hanyu. If he wants to leave, so be it. I would at no cost want to be a cause of unhappiness to anybody, let alone him. I know he can sometimes do too much to please his fans. But if HE wants to go on, and if his ankle lets him do, what we are to have!

It might be just my impression, but he seemed a bit different this year, not only here, but also at nationals, a bit less joyful, a bit more disconnected. I hope he is doing well. It was odd that Brian was not there with him, although I understand they haven't been in contact for a while. I would like to see them together again, over the years Brian seemed to be exactly what he needed by his side.

That SP is a masterpiece, I hope he'll keep it for next season, assuming that there will be a next season. On a more cheerful note, the 4A doesn't seem that far away. If he stays healthy, I'm sure he'll get it.

I think it would have really helped him to have Brian and Tracy by his side. Maybe it was because of reducing contact to others as a covid precaution, maybe it was because he was on his own for so long that it felt somehow right for him this way. But I think them being there for him would really help, especially now that he does seem quite sad about the outcome.

I am really unsure about his retirement...I cannot imagine figure skating without Yuzu, plus I NEED another wonderful performance of Rondo (although I am one of those people who actually enjoyed the Olympic performance, even with the popped Salchow) and also, Nathan will probably retire now and I would love for Yuzu's career to outlast Nathan's (especially now, when there are so many headlines about the 'new reigning king').
At the same time, I feel it could be better for his wellbeing, both mentally and physically, to get away from the competition circus.

Not just Brian. Any coach. It would have been nice to have additional voice beside him, but perhaps not for him. I guess he didn't want anyone trying to talk him out of 4A.

When it was mentioned that he was going to be going coachless like Kwan once did in the past, I thought it was a joke. I was hoping for at least Ghislain.

Extending my congratulations for a certified 4A. Albeit, under rotated though but still. I've been a huge fan of Yuzuru since 2016 and I've just seen the outpour of adoration of many many many fans in Twitter. He may have chosen a jump over a medal but as he said it was his pride. He could've actually medalled if he will but I appreciate this spirit of chasing after your dream.

I would love for him to stick around for another cycle like Bychenko. The combination if his artistry and tecnique is really a marvel. At 27 he remains the best in Japan even with emerging talents and one of the best in the world.

Yuzu you are amazing!!!! 👏 👏 👏

Now we know why. He was under painkillers here too. His injury doesn't seem to be cured. How he could achieve what he did and still progress on 4A, now q in competition, defies understanding. I am in awe and worry too.

I want him to continue not because of 4A but I think Ten to Chi to is one of the best program of all time, I wish we could see him perform it to the perfection.

The most important thing though is if he is happy and healthy.
After PC2018, I honestly don't want him to continue anymore, because I think his two OGM are enough --and it is. But now, I kinda understand if he still wants to continue and complete that 4A. However, he needs to heal his injury first. This year's WC is not enough time for him to fully recovered. For me a year break is necessary and then he can participate in WC next year.

Last I saw of Yuzu was a video clip of a Japanese journalist telling him about the status of his 4A < and Yuzu being nothing short of stunned and elated. It was great to see. Were it not for the person's Twitter account getting suspended that fast, the video would be here. So forget about thinking it's any kind of stinging pain for him. Quite the opposite.

I'm not sure where you're getting 1.25 from. See here:

From Time Magazine:

“No matter how hard, no matter how unimaginable, I want to push a little bit more for those who have expectations of me,” he said afterward. “That [attempt] was my pride. It’s going to make me more complete. That’s why I did it.”

Classic Yuzuru 😜

Yuzu has always been my biggest inspiration. I feel that the 4 years of following his career make me grow as a person as well. Regardless of whether he will continue, I will support him.

Just want to thank Yuzu for everything he has put out. I hope he will be satisfied with what he has accomplished. 🥲

Hi everyone! I wanted to ask, do we have any confirmation he will compete at worlds? I haven't gone to the mens' threads because I've been a little sad, so I am out of the loop.

I can't say I am not surprised to see a Korean entertainment news outlets report something about Yuzuru, a Japanese athlete.

This is very true, I have been active on kpop twitter this year, and he united kpop fans in a way the music could never. Everyone was watching the competition for him! SHINee fans in Latam loved him very much 💙 (but so did everyone else in every part of the world).

For a guy who attained 2 Olympics Gold Medals, not being able to jump a perfect 4A, after focusing all his attention on it has to be disheartening.

Not yet but with his ankle I think it's better not to push it

Thank you! I hope he makes the best decision for his health.

Could this be the video you were talking about?
