As @chuckm said, I’ve learned not to give much weight to what the skaters do in practice. Especially as a Gracie fan. :(
I remember Gold looking very solid during practices at the Boston Worlds, even during the morning of the free skate (Saturday). Unfortunately, as we all know, it didn't quite translate to the final product. I saw this with couple other skaters as well (non-American). Now, interestingly enough, Wagner wasn't doing quite as much during those practices, although it was clear (to me anyway) that she was at least in competitive shape. It was less clear what we were going to see her try. Some reports were claiming she was injured (don't think it was ever confirmed or apparent). And in this case, things worked out in her favor.

All this to say, this reinforced what I had already deduced since the early 2000s - practices really can't be used as a predictor for how the skater will do in the actual event. The reports on Liu are interesting, though - confirms that she's ready to go - just remains to be seen if she can deliver at game time.

I do think it's a positive sign that Alysa's practices have improved since Nats. I was impressed by the number of 3As landed especially during runthroughs (they look more consistent than Young You's right now) as well as the consistency of the other jumps. I don't see Alysa really pushing for the podium, but a top eight finish is entirely possible and two clean skates could definitely make top six.

At the very least, these reports show that Alysa Liu's competition readiness has not been set back too much by either her missing training during isolation or the coaching change. Of course, anything can happen at a given competition (especially something as pressure-packed as the Olympics), but I don't think I've ever seen her let nerves totally overtake her. Doing a 3A always has a certain risk/reward, but landing it would boost her score. Even if not 100% successful, as long as she gets what a 2A would have earned, I think she'll be just fine.

Agreed, she has nothing to lose by going for it. Especially as a "dark horse".

So, the girls on a mission: Anna, Sasha, and Alysa for the podium? Nah, Kamila may have a different idea.
You're right, Kamila really have a different idea and she is likely out of podium (or competition) now. Anna is injured and she is also at risk. At least one of Leona, Young You, Alysa, Wakaba, and Kori are going to be on podium. Even Karen Chen has a long shot for podium now. Russian podium sweep seems very unlikely at this point. So how do you feel with a new podium prediction? Happy now?

Im curious if anyone's noticed what kind of rapport Alysa has with her coaches on these practice sessions? Many skaters say that relationship is crucial right before a high pressure skate. Thats really the only thing I'm worried about. Otherwise, she looks ready.

If someone surprising gets on the podium, I'd be thrilled with either Alysa, Wakaba, or Young. I love every single one of their programs and really appreciate their triple acep efforts. Mana too.

Valieva is probably out and Anna now has a bad ankle and a taped up neck. I honestly think only one Russian girl will be on the podium.
I can't say this is out of the realm of possibility... Anna has delivered time after time even with pneumonia or injuries, but if Sasha skates like she did at Euros, she could drop off the podium. I, for one, am glad to see variety in the women's podium even though I'm very sad with how that variety is going to be achieved.

I just want to say that I hope fans of women's skating will join me in watching both the Olympic SP and FSkates. I truly believe the competitors can sense or feel the support that they get from audiences via stream, tv, whatever.

And these women DESERVE all the support and kudos that we can give them. This is the US women's thread, so I'll start by saying let's all lend our emotional support to Mariah Bell, Karen Chen and Alysa Liu. Whether their motivation surges or not is probably an individual thing, but I hope every one of the women competing will enjoy their skating and use the energy and high of Just. Being. At. The. Olympics to soar! :hap10::bsplit::love:

The ruling isn't fair to 29 of the women who will be competing in this event. Let's lift and support them to rise above it!

I'm going to stop watching Women Figure skating from now on. I will continue support American clean skaters though. I don't care the placement anymore. What a joke. BYE figure skating.

I hope people will be kinder to the US ladies from now on. No more “they’re doing content from the 90s.” Re: Karen & Mariah. These ladies are amazing and they’re doing content that was/is relevant for when they started skating competitively. We shouldn’t want any of these ladies to break their bodies trying to chase an unnatural quad revolution. I feel so sorry for Bradie, who basically did break her body trying to keep up. And Alysa, who’s pushed her body to the limit since she was 11 or 12, trying to keep up. Karen and Mariah who have likely felt “less than” for not “being able” to keep up.

Miss Bradie, that's her twitter update

I will watch when I wake up, the same as the RD. I have oral surgery tomorrow at 9 am and cannot watch women at 4 am my time. Best of luck to all skaters!

Yeah I'm one of the ones guilty of harping on about the lack of 3-3s. I'd like to apologise for that. I'm sorry. The past week has really put a brand new perspective on how I view the sport.

Me too. I'm sorry for criticizing US ladies in the past. I don't realize how difficult to be a "clean" athlete until now. Sorry to Karen as I was a bit pissed off about the team event choice.
