Kamila Valieva: Anti-doping Case and Follow-ups

As a side note, this unfortunate series of events will definitely have repercussions. I can see how the ISU will react. Raising the age for seniors, no quads in juniors, more testing of elite juniors... etc... The sport could change.
I sincerely hope so.

It's heartwarming to read that Eteri and her team are rooting for Kami. It's hard to feel like everyone hates you, just because they can't get your results, but I know that Eteri and Kami will be able to come out strong from this episode.

that person as the good guy

A young woman who didn't know the full context lied to an authority figure for her boyfriend... oh my god, crime of the millenium!

the doping authorities are completely out of control, again, I ask you.... what negative consequences have they ever faced for their mistakes?

Not me. Kamilagate may end up being the proverbial last straw for me.

Doping a child to ensure gold medals is so beyond the pale. I have lost most of my enthusiasm for both figure skating and the Olympics.
I will 100 per cent not watch Valieva skate if she is allowed. I'm actually on the fence over whether I'm going to watch her two compatriots, to be honest, since I think it highly unlikely that Valieva's doping is somehow an isolated case. I think I very well may just watch everyone else and call it a day, not worrying about medals.

I will be coherent with my previous posts: it would be a great outcome!
I'm not so sure it would change anything (in Russia).

If quads will still be allowed in senior competitions juniors will try to get quads anyway because they give you such a hugh advantage. I don't know how long adult skaters can contain their quads, but looking at Sasha and Anna, both are only months away from being 18, it seems that at least until 19 quads will be possible for female skaters. This could maybe limit the carrer of the topskaters to 1 or 2 seasons.

So even if they can't perform quads in junior competitions they will train for it because without them it will be hard to competitive once you go to seniors. The level of competition among juniors will still be crazy high and the 3A will become even more important. And besides olympics I don't think a skater feels more nervous in a GP than in a junior GP and I don't think this would reduce the risk of (mental) health problems at all.

It would also need some ethic code for junior trainers and their training exercises but I think something like that would be hard to enforce and controll.

I think it's important to discuss the topic but I have the feeling that for some it is more important to find a solution quickly than to find the right solution.

I would not be surprised, the discourse that is being handled is that pushing girls to do quadruple jumps is causing all this. Yes, of course, because they are women and it is not possible for them to perform this type of jump, because only with abuse can a girl be able to land an ultra-C element. Really all this is so disgusting for the progress of women's figure skating. There are people who are still trapped in the 90's and hope that they continue to see that in competition, anyway.
Here is a message from someone trapped in the 80's :)

1/ I don't think we have seen quads by women yet. I remember seeing quads by teenagers. If AS or AT can jump quads at 19 with the bodies of 19yo young women, I may change my mind. As for 3A, it is still very rare by women and not by teenagers. I will not elaborate, I would not be accurate enough in English... For instance, I remember reading posts from people stating that AZ had "bloated". Leaving aside how disrespectful it is, in fact she has not "bloated": we had "known" her with a childish body and now she has become a woman - but she is not skating anymore.

2/ Every time I saw sportswomen with results close to sportsmen's, it ended with a doping scandal. Just a side remark: last Monday, after the team event, I read that the German commentator had called KV a Wunderkind. Unfortunately, on Tuesday, she had become a new Wundermädchen. There is nothing to be proud of, all the less because she would most certainly be the best even without quads - and maybe even better on other aspects of figure skating.

3/ Believe it or not, in the 80's or the 90's, people did watch and enjoy figure skating with women not jumping quads, and sometimes not jumping triples! Unbelievable! :)

Can people stop saying the bodies of adult women when not all adult women have the same body type? It’s really offensive at this point. Look at the freshmen in a college gymnastics meet. You’ll see my point about 19-year-olds.
There was absolutely nothing controversial or offensive in my message.
Obviously not all adult women have the same body type. So what?
But that being said, just looking at KV, I would not say she is 25 and just looking at ETuk, I would not say she is 15. Once again, it's not offensive, it's just obvious! :)

Thank you! People act that all women look like Liza T., when they reach age of 20. No, we aren't all fortunate to have her looks and body type. I remember how Tursynbaeva was frequently dragged even when she was adult for not having "woman body". It's such a discrimination and it is offensive to discuss about it liek we have right to dictate what type of body a skater should have.

Yeah, it's not like someone waves a magic wand on 19-year-olds and they have an hourglass figure.

A 6 hours 50 minutes meeting with CAS to decide on just if she skates or not in the ladies competition? Man Kamila may be willing to go out on her sword like a Warrior woman! Oops I can't call her a Warrior woman because then the IOC might punish her like she is an adult. ;)

I hope her parents are involved with everything from Russia so they can help her and the lawyers make the proper choices.

And what must the IOC be thinking after a 6 hour 50 minute meeting? They cannot be happy so I'm wondering if they will look penelize her as an adult instead of a minor or at the very least hand out the harshest suspension to a minor which I gather is 2 years. I hope the Russian sports people and lawyers know what they're doing because they may very well be risking this phenomenal figure skater's career with such a challenge.
And I think it's safe to say no one is impressed by these Russian sports leaders.

No question KV needs her side of the story told to CAS since she did not get to do that with the public. It was guilty until proven innocent and I'm glad her lawyers got to speak on her behalf today although I have my doubts that it will help. We will find out Monday if she gets the skate in the lady's competition. If not they may take weeks to work on a suspension. And there will probably be months of investigations as well.

Article with more information about the less than clean career of Dr. S

Two things I find really odd about the article.

1. Shabotova was never with Eteri.
2. The pillbox anecdote doesn't make much sense since Eteri doesn't run training camps. Their summer relocation to Novogorsk doesn't really count. The closest they've had to training camps are guest skaters from many countries who stay for a few months or weeks. Gleikhengauz has done camps in Mexico and I think Europe and Dudakov has done camps in the Philippines. But the idea that they would be giving out pillboxes in those camps is laughable.

Anna and Sasha are only months away from being 18. I doesn't look like they are loosing their quads at the moment. Of course only time can tell how long the will be able to contain their quads, but with more and more junior skaters being able to jump quads it's very likely that from now on there will be some 18 and 19 year old skaters who can and will do quads in senior competitions.

Alina isn't skating competitve anymore but she is still skating in shows and from the shows and training videos we know that she performs triple jumps. My impression from the videos I saw is that if she wanted to skate in competition she would be easily in the world's TOP 10.

That part is just speculation, but the part about the doctor is based on verifiable facts. That's why I linked the article.

What I find puzzling here is how the other countries federation are not speaking up. I have seen nothing from other nations here. I believe that for instance, some countries like Japan or USA should speak up on the behalf of their athletes in the team event and of the individual event.
Not puzzling at all. For individual country federations to speak up right now would only add to the "noise" and not to the resolution. Could even be counterproductive. Sometimes best thing is to remain silent, at least until the appropriate moment comes. The international organizations that have direct standing for the integrity of the competition (IOC, ISU, WADA) are rightfully at the forefront as the complainants. I'm sure the USA, Japan, and Canada are perfectly happy to have these organizations carry the water on this.

Only time will tell! Doping is still Doping!
I thought so too but then you look at the law maybe not olympic but there has to be intent in criminal law in the US aand Canada so ie if someone slipped something to you and you didnt know the prosecutor wouldl not have proven an element of the offence. It is rare. Now if it is a child it is even harder toshowthey had intent because of maturity but I guess this opens the door for Liu or Kaori or Wakaba or even Loena for a medal. None of this is right but I am not sure Valieva should lose her dream at no fault of her own.
